“Great resort and amazing area”
Reviewed March 11, 2012

This was our first time to Thailand and me & wife had the best experience. We had booked the Grand Deluxe Pool View room, but on arrival we were upgraded to a Junior Suite, which was almost as big as our house. We had a view looking down to pools and a short walk to get down to the beach. The staff at the resort were very helpfull, we had pre-booked out airport transfer through the hotel and we had someone waiting for us on arrival at the airport.
We had lunch at the resort once we arrived, they have amazing food there, but there are pleanty of resturants & cafes on the beach with serve even better quality food and really cheap. For breakfast we went a couple of times to the Kamala Bakery on the Main St, about 10mins walk from the resort, best lemon crapes ever.
As for location Kamala is very quite, but is perfect if thats what you are after. There are plenty of bars & the beach is amazing. There are still plenty of tourist out & about/ Kamala markets are on friday nights, just a couple of minutes walk from the resort, try the popcorn.

We also watch the Fantasea show with is just up the road & worth going to.

We ventured to Patong with is only 30mins away, the resort has a afternoon shuttle bus that can get you there and back. We also checked out the markets in Phuket City, which are worth going to.

A bar worth checking out is located just outside the resort, it's just a little bamboo shack, cheap drinks. There you can get your laundry done for 50B/kg. and you can also hire a scooter for 300B/day.

Will definitely be back there next year.

The brochure states "Aimed towards adults travelling without children". The website states “not recommended for children under 15". The sign at the door states "Not children allowed". That is why I chose this resort. However there were numerous screaming children, in two of the six pools. In general, the clientele were a little older & fatter than I had hoped for, & not much social life going on there. I can understand the attraction for the retired oldies, but if you are a younger person looking for some social fun, you’re going to be disappointed. Koron Beach Resort, your better option. I have stayed at much worse places though & overall very clean and well run.

We travelled to Phuket with Saga and arrived at the hotel about 11am on 1 Feb to be met by Tom the Saga rep who was most apologetic that our rooms would not be available until about 1pm as check-out time was not until 12 noon. We were allocated a room right next to the beach, pool, bar and Prime Kitchen by the Sea - the best "regular" room on site. We found the Thai food in both Prime Kitchen restaurants to be very good and in fact only ate out at a beach restaurant once (Ponds) which I thought was inferior to the hotel food. We ate European food on a few occasions and this was also very good although the limited menu for Saga guests gets a little repetitive. As Saga guests are All Inclusive, we had no bar bill which was just as well as this could have been quite large over 3 weeks. The bar and waiting staff were all fantastic - always happy, smiling and very helpful as was Tom. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are not looking for a quiet hotel with no raucous nightlife - you need to go to Patong for the usual Thai "delights". The beach was initially a shock with row of beach beds all along the entire length of the beach. If you turn right out of the hotel and walk to the end of the beach (abouot 1 mile) there is fantastic snorkling over the reef at the end of the bay. Trips to Phi Phi and Yao Yai islands were highlights with fantastic snorkling.

This was our 3rd stay at Kamala beach Hotel over a period of several years - the first being pre Tsunami. It is fair to say the hotel now bears no resemblance to the original but I feel they have only made it better. We stayed in a Junior Suite in the grandwing which was a delighful room & perfect for the 3 of us travelling (we travelled with our 16 year old son) as the suite gave a separate bedroom area & bathroom to the main part of the room.

Starting with the room, the only fault with it is the severe lack of lighting! Even in the bathroom the lighting is so dim that it was almost impossible for my husband to shave & for me to put on make-up I had to set up a torch! I appreciate electricity is an issue but at least a decent light in the bathroom would be helpful. The suite had a beautiful bathroom with a massive bath & wet room, separate washbasin area & dressing area. Plenty of hanging space but not much drawer space - none in fact only open shelving. The King bed was very comfortable & the air conditioning very effective. We didn't use the mini bar as it is expensive but plenty of room to keep your own drinks chilled & they replace water every day free of charge - one bottle per person. The room was always cleaned promptly by around 11 & they always left enough towels (amazing how many hotels leave only 2 sets of towels when there are 3 of you in a room!)

Pool area. The pool area is lovely & not over-crowded. My only critisism would be that across a very large pool area there was only one set of steps to get into the pool meaning you had to dodge round sunbeds to get in & out. Maybe not an issue for more mobile people but I am unable to get into a pool without steps. Even if you arrived after a morning in Patong you could always get sunbeds around the pool. You can change your pool towels as often as you like as there are always fresh ones available.

Beach area - the beach is much more crowded than it used to be with rows & rows of sunbeds. Still lovely to walk along the bay though even though we didn't stay on the beach.

Food - we ate mostly in the beach restaurants where lunch for 3 of us with drinks was never more that £10-£12. Thai food tastes wonderful with your feet in the sand! We also ate in some of the restaurants in Kamala town which were a little more expensive but still very good.

There is a little minimart outside the main hotel reception area over the road. Drinks & provisions much cheaper in there than in the hotel shop & nthe tours booked there are considerabley cheaper than if booked on the beach.

Tuk tuks into Patong were non negotiable this time & quite expensive at 400 THB each way - highly inflated on previous years, but still fun. ONE WORD OF WARNING - Someone tried to steal my debit card out of the ATM when I was taking money out in Paton Beach Rd. Luckily with 3 of us we were able to retrieve it, but be extra cautious when using ATM's to ensure no one is 'hanging around' because they were very slick & quick & it left us feeling a bit shell shocked!

Overall Kamal still ticks all the boxes. beautiful hotel in a delighful beachfront location, great places to eat & drink, chilled uncrowded pool scene & close enough to Patong to visit but far enough away to get away from it again! We will definitely be going back

Room Tip: If travelling with teenagers the suites are a good option

We arrived at Kamala Beach resort a little earlier than check in time however we we given a welcome drink (Roselle Flower) very yummy whilst waiting. We did not wait too long and they advised they looked for a better room for us as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary.
Instead of a garden deluxe they freely upgraded us to poolside deluxe. This was a lovely gesture and we also got a lovely surpise on entering the room with a beautifully decorated bed.
Rooms are fantastic, large, modern and cleaned to a very high standard.

Poolside swim up bar was great but only buy beers here as the cocktails we found were not so great in taste and pricey in comparison to other places around phuket.

We enjoyed accessing the beach area from back of hotel with lovely stalls, and great food can be bought here and you can eat at the beach front restaurants for very good prices. We ate here a few times and enjoyed the well prepared food. I was a little weary at first however our tummies stayed happy throughout the trip eating from these stalls!
There is a yummy pancake stall when you turn right out of the hotel area, maybe about 2 or 3 minutes walk. Costs around 50 Baht for a banana and vanilla filled pancake.

The dinner ( a la carte) from Suprime Kitchen by the Sea was fabulous as well and worth the price we paid and is a must to try.

We enjoyed a few drinks from our mini bar, and then stumbled across some problems when leaving. After the first day we had 2 beers and a water which never got topped up then on the second day the same thing happened and we think that the cleaner may have got confused since we also had some of our own beers in the fridge. She topped up everything else though except the beers and water and on leaving they wanted to charge us for double what we had (i.e. 2 days worth of a full mini bar in beers/water) since we were not topped up on either day. When in fact all we had was one days worth of beer from mini bar but spread over 2 days. With a lot of the staff's English not being so great we struggled to explain that we had not been topped up at all and the cleaner must have mistook our bought beers for theirs even though the hotel has stickers around the seals. They then argued that I signed the invoice in the room saying that she had topped up the bar, when in fact i filled it all out myself trying to keep tabs on what we were taking from the fridge. After all it's not a lot of money but this actually spoilt the end of our stay there and we had a really bad day after them arguing and running back and forth to the room counting bottles in our bin etc. All which of course was our own beers as we told them there were no hotel seals on the bottle caps. In the end the lady allowed us to pay for what we said we had on the second day only as I had already settled first days mini bar in advance. I still dont think she believed us though! This problem took nearly 40 minutes to resolve whilst our taxi waited for us and made us late for a tour!

On another note our ground floor room on 2nd day develped a really bad smell which i think came from outside. Smelled like a blocked drain and was quite terrible. I never complained though as we went on a tour and got back late with the smell still lingering. We were too tired to try and explain to the staff about the smell since were leaving in the morning in any case.

Also on day of leaving I left my brand new swimsuit that I'd washed hanging on a hook in the room. I was still in phuket so contacted them the same day and apparently there was no sign of it. Surely there is a lost property that the hotel keeps customers things for a while?
My hubby saw it on the hook, and so did I but I just forgot to go back and get it as we both got distracted when the bellman arrived to assist us with our bags. I was very upset about this as I bought this overseas and was quite pricey too and I only got to wear it once!

Definately visit Fantasea - its on the opposite side of the road from the hotel and takes a 5 minute walk. If you want to buy your own beers and water, crips etc. there is a small mini mart as you exit resort on left hand side selling very very cheap beers.

You could get 3 beers for the price of one in your hotel mini bar. Also you could buy a case of small waters for something like 80 baht, Crisps for aorund 30 baht etc.
He also offered tours to phi phi and phang nga thorugh Similan Pro Dive Tours at very compeltitive pricing. Not sure what the tours were like though as we had pre-booked but it may be worth your while to check out the tour operator's reviews as we paid 3 times the price by pre-booking it all.

All in all we loved the place but our overall trip got spoilt by a few simple things that we felt were unnecessary and could have been dealt with in good time especailly since we tried to clarify the whole mini bar story on our 2nd day but no-one listened to us. One of the cleaners came to our room to sort it out on the 2nd day and said it had been resolved, but on morning of leaving the whole saga continued again and no-one knew what we were talking about.

So if you go here stay away from the mini bar and keep to simple questions for staff (even this posed as a problem for us at times). Understandably you are in Thailand and there will be communication issues, but at a resort this large we found communication for the simplest requests frustrating and just left it in the end.
Make sure you get a room away from front side of hotel where it seems they have drainage issues.

There are other smaller places that most likely could offer you a lot more for the same prices, with a more personalised experience. Check out my other review for Baan Malinee in Bang Tao if you are interested in staying at b&b's in Phuket.

When we checked in we were shown to a 2nd Floor room near the beach restaurant. As soon as we walked in the room, the smell was overwhelming. When we pointed it out to the staff, they took a deodorizer away from the air conditioner and replaced it with another deodorizer. It was a strong moldy/musty smell. We were not willing to accept this room and were taken to another room nearby - there was a strong smell there as well. We were then taken to a third room that had less a smell but at that time I asked to speak to a Manager. The staff were relectant to escalate to a Manager and as it was a week end said there was only a Supervisor on duty. The Supervisor upgraded us to a room in the main building facing the street. The room was fine and did not have the smell. It was a disappointing start to our week at Kamala Beach. It took about 2 and a half hours to sort out the room issue and there was no follow up from the hotel management regarding our concerns. We (and other customers) noticed that there was always a strong moldy/musty smell in the hallway by the rooms that led to the hotel restaurant by the beach as well as the washroom on the ground floor near the beach. Other customers that were returnees to this hotel told us yes there was a moldy smell and that they knew not to take the older rooms near the front of the hotel. We are concerned about the safety of these rooms and will be bring the concern to the the hotel group.

On the good side, the beach was great with lots of restaurants and shops, the pools were nice and there were always beach loungers available. There is a gym that is decent but crowed in the morning and late afternoon. The breakfast buffet is very good with lots of variety. The Kamala Beach area is great, very laid back.

The front desk staff were quite unresponsive and uninterested. We would not return to this hotel due to the concerns around the moldy rooms and the hotel's response to our concerns.

We decided to stay in Kamala Beach because we wanted to avoid the Patong area, and were very happy with our decision. Originally i was a little worried that Kamala might be a bit too out of the way,, but didn't feel that way at all. When you walk down to the beach there are plenty of shops and restaurants on either side as you walk down the beach. We were there for 4 nights and ate at several different restaurants. I truly enjoyed the area, and would definitely stay there again when/if I make it back to Phuket.
There's a great Bob Marley bar on the beach that we went to the last night...bummed that we didn't discover it earlier in the trip since that was a great place to hang out at night.
