“Fab hotel for families”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2011

There's sooo much to say about this hotel, I just came back from a 14-night stay with my family (husband and three children aged 2, 5, 10).

We stayed in a two bedroom-suite, which was really spacious (64 sqm) and nice. The hotels was only built a year or two ago, and it still feels very modern and updated. Nice, clean bathroom, separate bedroom and one bedroom / livingroom area.

The only bad things I could say about the room is that the balcony faced the surroundings, but also the staff's dining area and laundry room which meant we didn't have the best of views. And a thing that I kinda missed having in this kind of family resort was cooking facilities. Some members of my family were sick a couple of days, and it would have been nice to be able to cook something light for them - and not have to order a pizza or a thai dish from the restaurant.

As there are no cooking facilities, the little minimarket in the hotel building has very limited assortment - a lot less than normally found in Sunwing hotels. But you can find the most requested items here of course, such as drinks, snacks, biscuits, hygiene products, goggles and pool toys.

The hotel has an amazing pool area, with seven pools altogether - something for everyone. One of the pools even has a big sunroof over the kids section, so it's perfect for babies and toddlers. Kids also enjoy the playground, and the indoor miniland which is perfect and airconditioned when the kids need a little break from the sun. They also have playstation games and computers for older children.

There are two restaurants in the hotel, one is called La Tasca and that's also where breakfast is served - and where they have the shows at night. Food is average, but the breakfast is great - as always with Sunwing. They offer a wide choice of a hot and cold buffet. The second restaurant is located on the beach, and is called Fino. we only ate here once but it was truly wonderful - especially when you're getting a bit fed up with fried rice and noodles. :)

When going down to the beach, it's a little difficult to walk to the left with a stroller, but that's (one of) the ways to Kamala centre - which is a very small centre, but still. It has all the shopping you would expect in this kinda place, together with restaurants, bars, tailors, sightseeing companies, beauty places (massage), laundry places and such. If you take a right when entering the beach, however, it's a paved way that leads to some nice restaurants, bars and some smaller "shops" (which is more like booths with swimwear and beach dresses and that kinda stuff).

Overall, Kamala is a quiet part of Phuket, but is only 15-20 minutes away from the craziness of Patong. There's a market outside the hotel on Fridays which is not to be missed. They sell all sort of fake bags/t-shirts/sunglasses/shorts/make-up, and also have a small part which is basically a food market. Even if you don't dare to try anything, it's well fascinating to watch!

We stayed in the Happy Baby Studio, Room No 3145. Before booking the tour, I called up to check on the reservation and confirm the check in timing at 11am. On arrival, I was told the room was not ready and I have to wait till 3pm. Unfortunately, my baby was running on high fever and I had to explain to the hotel staff several times in order for them to grant me a room so that I can bath my baby to bring down the temperature. The puzzling thing was..the staff declined to give me a room stating that they were fully booked for the day. I had to plead 2-3 times before they release a room for me quite immediately. Well...I wonder if they were truly booked for the day as I do see several empty rooms.
When we enter into our rooms, we were greeted by mosquitoes. We had to spray a few rounds of insecticides to be sure the mosquitoes are gone. Being a mom of an infant, I certainly do not like the idea of having chemicals in the room. The delayed check-in and mosquitoes studio definitely spoilt the beginning of my holidays!

On the brighter side, I do have to agree the room are well-facilitated with the babies equipment from cot to stroller ( surrounded by buzzing mosquitoes thou..), bathtub and baby cutlery. The distance from the hotel room to beach is also ideal. The concept of every building having a pool on its own is good. Breakfast spread is good and the Baby Playland concept is excellent. If one is bored after eating the La Tasca or Fino restaurant for days , just 5-10 min walk around the beach and you can find some decent restaurants. I have to warn, I tried a few restarants (ordered Thai food) and they cannot be compared to the ones in Bangkok. So please lower your expectation on food. Taxi ride cost about 600 Baht to Patong city which I find is ex. There is nothing to shop around in Kamala so if you are a shopper, Kamala is not for you. Stay in Patong or get a resort which offers driver for free ( I know there are some who does this).

Back to some unhappy encounters..in regards to the room, the air-conditioning was loud..and well..the water supply during one of the days were shut for 20min,reason being burst pipes. Not so good especially when we had someone stuck doing big business in the toilet.
I also had this real bad experience with the conceirge. There was a girl ( I think she is Swedish) who replied that they only served the following, and pointed to 3 flags- Norway, Finland, Sweden. Being Asian, I felt discriminated and rude of her for not referring me to the front desk. She just turned her head around after pointing the flags.
This is definitely a 5 star resort for Scandiniavans or maybe European. Kids-show are all in Scandic language. Even most of the books and cartoons in Mini Playland are Scandic. I will not recommend this resort for Asian families. But will for others.

I would highly recommend this resort. It is not only affordable but clean, the staff are fantastic and the rooms cater for young kids perfectly. We spent 10 nights here and stayed in a Happy Baby Studio and loved it. My son who was 18 months at the time loved the poolside toys and Miniland (indoor kids play areea). This room type also had a stroller, bumbo, cot and babybath - which was fantastic. We spent most days by the pool and while my son slept we were able to sit in the sun in our courtyard. The food was spectacular and the massages by the ocean were also fantastic. We'd love to go back. The resort is only 20 minutes from Patong where we did our shopping and drivers are permanently waiting at the hotel to take you where you'd like to go - they even wait while you shop (negotiate a return price with waiting time before you go - it'll be easier). It was the first time we'd been to Phuket, Thailand and it won't be the last.

This was our 1st stay at the Sunwing Resort, Kamala Beach depite the fact that we have been travelling to Thailand for approximately 12 years. The resort was everything we had hoped for plus more. We travelled with our two children (ages 8 & 4) & we wanted to have one week in Thailand that catered alot for them & this is what this resort did. We stayed in a pool access room that allowed the children to swim as much as they liked & we could sit out & watch them. The hotel offers everything you could want, friendly & helpful staff, great amenities for adults & children & great food at a very reasonable price.

The hotel is situated only approximately 15 minutes drive from Patong, however, you could think you are hours from anywhere. The beach is only a short walk, it is very clean & good to swim in. Along the beach there are a couple of good restraunts that have good food at very reasonable prices.

The kids club & activities (& shows) for the children were fantastic. The only problem is that some of the shows are in Swedish/Norwegian which our kids could not understand, however, that was no big issue. The kids still sang along & had a great time.

We would strongly recommend this hotel/resort & will stay again on our next visit to Thailand.

This is a very nice hotel, maybe the best I've ever stayed on. The room is fantastic, very large and spacious.
The only BIG minus is, if you don't have kids, you get's lot's of angry faces towards you 24/7 of all the other visitors there. Some even said when they passed our room with garden: "why are you occupying this nice room if you don't have children, couldn't you choose another hotel?". I couldn't believe this, but it's true. This was really sad, because the resort is really fantastic. Now we decided to wait to return till we get's children ;)
PS! Every morning around 630am you will be waking up by many small children crying and screaming in the halls.
Sunwing has two restaurants, one on the beach, and one called La Tasca - here you can buy lot's of fantastic thai and international food you can bring to your room (or get delivered on your door for 50baht). The pools are amazing, the hotel feels never too crowdy.
If you're a couple who want's a nice hotel in Kamala, choose Sunprime Kamala, this hotel lies in same building, but it is not allowed to bring children there. Same big pools and a nice restaurant by the beach. We would have booked this hotel, but this came on Ving's homepage some months after we booked Sunwing.

It was located in a nice quit area but still nearby everything needed. It was only a short trip with taxi to Patong if you didnt find what you were looking for at Kamala.

We travelled with children age 8-10 and the location of the familiy room facing one of the swimming pool was excellent for the whole familiy. Quit, good food very nice staff I would have no hesitation to recommend this hotel for families with babies and young children.

Could have been more activities for a bit older children 10 ++++++

we arrived late at night and check in was simple and friendly
the room was great clean and spacious with the family suite having 2 rooms the 2nd room having its own tv.( not sure about the review that claimed otherwise).
the room also had a facilties for coffee and a microwave along with basic crckery for those that like to prepare simple snacks etc.
Rooms were serviced daily and were kept immaculate for us even with all our shopping beach sand and wet towels daily so thanks again.
we had previously stayed at sunwing BangTao and this resort is almost identical.I wouldnt hesitate to stay at either but Kamala is probably the better location being more central to the island.
The restaurants were clean and the staff friendly especially SAN.
The management of the resort is friendly and first class stopping to say hello and said he remembered us from out stay at Bang Tao which was a nice touch
The pools were cleaned at well maintained, during our stay 2 pools were closed on a rotating basis for maintanance but that was no inconvenience as there were 5 others to use along with the pool bar and kids pool.
prices at the resort are very reasonable and not overpriced, but to save a little bit there is a 7/11 nearby as you head to the beach turn left and walk back over the foot bridge into Kamala town and it is about a 300 meter walk. Good for stocking up on snacks for day trips.
The kids club has a variety of activities daily from colouring and painting vidoes etc.
the girls played with the kids and made them feel welcome all the time.
At night there was differnt entertainment such as bands or a magic show along with movies shown projected onto the back wall wher the kids couold sit and watch. my 3 year old was hard to feed as all she wanted to do was go and play with the other children.
Massages at the resort are fantastic and same price a those on the beach at 300 baht per hour. We had one most days.
The kids love the resorts characters lollo the giraffe Bernie the bear and Woody the elephant and would chase them around the restaurant every breakfast.

i honestly cannot fault anything with our trip to sunwing Kamala clean well maintained spacious good food and good location away from the madness.i will admit that the restaurants and kids club look like an IKea store but it is bright and colourful the rooms are furnished in a lot of teak and woodgrian giving it a very much thai feel with all rooms having a view of a pool.

Outside the resort on friday nights are Kamala markets that have good variety and good prices along with the phuket night markets on saturday i wouldnt shop in Patong for clothes as you will pay double.
DVD's i would get from the guys at hello kittyy store or outside Real Tattoo at Patong Plaza.both good quality and 60 baht.
