Swissotel Resort Phuket Kamala Beach
Ranked #14 of 35 Hotels in Kamala
Reviewed August 18, 2012

As this was previously a Courtyard by Marriott, the standard is similar to that of say Holiday Inn. As I believe Swissotel tends to be more upmarket, I am not really sure why they decided to add this property.

We arranged for an airport pick-up as we have a 2-year-old and a small baby, and I had previously instructed that I wanted seats for our kids. It's of course cheaper to arrange transportation at the airport, but I don't mind paying for safety taking into consideration the high number of auto accidents in Thailand. However, the car showed up with 2 regular child seats, i.e. great for the 2-year-old but not for the baby. We therefore had to sit with the baby in our lap all the way to the hotel, which is not what I paid for. When you arrange transportation from the hotel, they simply hire one of the guys from the taxi stand outside the hotel, so really if you're looking for safety or luxury; just forget about it.

I'm the equivalent of a gold member with the Swissotel group, and had mentioned this in an email prior to my arrival, but it was not acknowledged on check-in and I had to inform them on what benefits I should receive (such as free breakfast). Since most visitors to this hotel are Korean and Russian tour groups, probably they don't have a lot of loyalty members visiting.

Other than that the kids' club is adequate and entertained our 2-year-old to some extent, and the staff members are courteous. He also enjoyed the small kids' pool as he could walk around there without being disturbed by adults or older kids. As some people have mentioned, the walkway to the beach is a bit of a disaster, and the beach is filled up with trash. Perhaps the situation will improve during high season.

Overall I'll recommend this hotel if you're looking for something affordable and don't expect luxury. If you're looking to party or are on a romantic trip, I'd stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: If you have a baby stroller, staying on the first floor is convenient as the hotel does not have any...

Dear Guest, warm Greetings from Swissôtel Resort Phuket! We hope you are well and thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience about your stay with us. We are concerned to learn that we have not been able to meet your expectations in some areas and please accept our sincere apologies for the inconveniences caused. Regarding your experience with the airport transfer we fully understand your concern and we are actually working on this with a partner company to improve the service provided and ensure a better experience that matches our standards. It is also very unfortunate that you have not been recognized as a loyalty member and please be assured that this does not reflect our standards at all. We will continue to work with our team and intensify our trainings. As you mentioned Swissôtel has just taken over this property and we are still working hard on the improvement of the product and our services, in order to reflect the full range of the Swissôtel standard. We as well have taken note about your comment regarding the walkway to the beach. We are aware of this and since it is an public trek and beach we do only have limited influence on its condition and cleanliness. Nevertheless we actually have just conducted a big cleaning day with our team members on August 20th, where we have addressed this issue to clean the hotel’s surroundings including the access, the underpass, the canal and the beach itself. These activities will be conducted on a regular basis, especially during the low season where the local community is not addressing this issue, to ensure that our guests will be able to enjoy a more pleasant and comfortable ambiance walking to and at the beach. We are happy to hear that your 2-year-old son enjoyed the kid´s pool and our kid´s club and we sincerely hope to have the chance to welcoming you back again in future and prove that we can do even better.

Visited Swissotel Resort in Kamala with family, myself with wife and daughter, my father on his first trip to Thailand & sister visiting from the UK. We booked into a 3 bedroomed villa and found the accomodation very comfortable. Lots of space and a nice balcony/terrace with walk round balcony - great for evening sit outs and chats.

Breakfast buffet while not having the widest choice was adequate and as previously mentioned the egg station was great.

While the location won't suit people looking for nightlife and all trappings of Patong, if you have a family with kids this would be a good choice due to its relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and great pool with a pool slide that even adults will enjoy. For those interested in taking trips a taxi rank is just outside the hotel with reasonable prices to other places of interest.

Overall I would recommend this hotel and will certainly consider staying here again on my next visit to Phuket.

I spent 6 days with my wife and kids, it was wonderful.
Friendly atmosphere, nice service and great environment for kids.
Value is great, rooms are nice, food is good and service is not bad at all.
The only things that adults will not like is the location which is a bit off, 1 restaurant and a SPA and a bar that are closed by 7:00 pm.
Looking for a really nice place for a 3 days family vacation, Swissotel Phuket is a good choice.

Room Tip: 2 bedrooms suites are nice, only problem is they have 1 bathroom and is a bit small. No elevators.

Dear Guest, warm greetings from Swissôtel Resort Phuket! We hope you are well and thank you very much for taking the time to post a review about your stay with us on Trip Advisor. We are very pleased to learn that you have enjoyed your stay at the Swissôtel Resort Phuket and that you like our service and facilities. We as well have taken note regarding your valuable feedback about our location and the opening hours. Since our hotel is located in Kamala, it is more quiet compared to other areas in Phuket like Patong, but this can also be an advantage especially for families or guests looking for a more relaxing environment. Regarding our pool bar, it is correct that it has the same operation hours like the pool itself, therefore our restaurant which also has a bar is open until 11.00pm. Thank you very much again for choosing the Swissôtel Resort Phuket and we are looking forward to hopefully welcoming you and your family back very soon again.

Our family of five had a lovely holiday here. We were well looked after by the friendly staff who on our arrival offered us drinks in the lobby and arranged for our bags to be taken to our room.
It turned out that our room was on the top floor which I didn't like due to no lifts and a fear of heights, so after requesting a lower floor we were given a room on the ground floor but were charged extra for the privelege even though the rooms were identical???
The living / kitchen area of the room was generous however the one bathroom was tiny. The layout of the hotel offered no privacy as all rooms faced into the pool area and you could see straight into rooms unless the curtains were kept closed. The restaurant was really nice and the food was great and cheap compared to Australia and Fuji within similar hotels. There is also restaurants and a bar just outside of hotel.
We chose to stay outside of Phuket deliberately to avoid noise and crowds which is achieved at this hotel, but after going there I would stay in Phuket next time. I think Kamala was just a bit too quite and far away for handiness.
I would like to mention though that the hotel and staff were fantastic keeping us safe whilst there was a snuami alert, leading us up a mountain( if this happens to you take mossie spray, water, snacks and hand held fan) until the all clear. We later learnt from other tourists that they had not even been informed of the warning by their hotel so had not evacuated, which is fine if the snuami doesn't hit!
This hotel is a good price and overall is a nice base with great staff but not the best location if that is important.

Dear Guest, thank you very much for making Swissôtel Resort Phuket your home away from home while staying in Thailand. We are very happy to hear that you and your family had a great holiday with us. We are also very pleased to learn that you enjoyed our renown friendly and attentive service, as well as our delicious and well-priced creations in our hotel restaurant. The safety and wellbeing of our guests, but also of our team members is very important to us and we always decide to take all necessary precautions in case of emergencies and we are very happy that the tsunami finally did not hit. Although the rooms are the same as you stated, the price difference between the rooms on the ground floor and the ones on higher floors is justified by their proximity and direct access to the pool, hence their more convenient location. Kamala is a more calm area, especially during the low season, but the more busy and noisy areas such as Phuket town or Patong can be easily reached by taxi within 30 minutes. Thank you very much again for your kind review and we hope that you maybe change your mind so we can welcome you back again very soon.

While Patong Beach is the most famous beach in Phuket, I would recommend Kamala Beach rather than Patong, especially for the family trip.
This is my third time to stay at this hotel, I'm always satisfied with everything in this hotel. Whenever I visit Phuket, I definitely stay here.

We have just spent ten happy days at this hotel and will definitely be returning. The room was perfect for our family (2 adults, 2 kids and a baby) and the kitchenette came in super handy. We had a two bed pool facing suite.

The pool with its slide was a big hit with the kids and the kids club was fantastic. I have a nine yr old and a 4 yr old and it catered for both. A great programme in place as well as plenty for the kids to do on a drop in basis. It was spotlessly clean and well staffed too.

The restaurant was also great as the food was good quality but not extortionately priced like hotels tend to be. Breakfast was buffet style and really good selection and quality. We especially liked the 'smoothie of the day' idea.

We would have given the place five stars had it not been for the slightly tedious trek to the beach from there. A shuttle bus would make things perfect. The underpass you have to use to get to the beach is quite intimidating as it is very secluded and lined with empty beer bottles. I would certainly not go down there alone and definitely not at night. Also the beach end nearest to the hotel is unusable with it being full of rubbish and unused shacks/debris. I would have thought a big chain like swissotel would dedicate some funds to ensuring a safe passage to the beach from the hotel. There is no way to walk to the beach without walking through this underpass which is a shame. Cleaning it up and maybe even putting security on patrol down there would help (the underpass is at the end of the driveway swissotel is on so it is feasible that they could move the security they already have down that drive further back to the underpass). Shuttle buses would be even better!

Underpass aside though we would be more than happy to recommend this place! Big thumbs up!

Dear Guest, we hope you are well and thank you very much for taking the time to post a review about your stay with us. It is only with the valuable feedback of our guests that we are able to maintain and even improve our high standards and quality of service. We are very pleased to learn that you and your family have enjoyed your stay at the Swissôtel Resort Phuket and that you liked our breakfast buffet, the chef’s creations and our price-value in the restaurant. Of course it also motivates our team, that your kids not only loved the pool and its waterslide, but also our various activities provided for kids and adults. Regarding the access to the beach we would like to truly apologize for the inconveniences caused and your disappointment. We fully understand your point and are aware of this. Since it is an public trek and beach we do only have limited influence on its condition and cleanliness. Nevertheless we actually have just conducted a big cleaning day with our team members on August 20th where we have addressed this issue to clean the hotel’s surroundings including the access, the underpass, the canal and the beach itself. The heart of this activity was of course to improve the comfort of our guests, take responsibility towards our environment and support the local community. We are planing more of such activities on a regular basis to ensure that next time you visit us again and all other guests will be able to enjoy a more pleasant and comfortable ambiance. We thank you very much again for your feedback and we are looking forward to hopefully welcoming you back at the Swissôtel Resort Phuket very soon again.

I staid with my 2 kids for 4 days at this resort and had a fairly good time. What was good about this hotel are the size of the rooms, the relaxed breakfast/dining zone and the service. What was not so good are the location, the size of the bathroom and the darkness of the rooms.
Check-in is only at 3pm so we had to wait 2 hours for our room, but were served refreshments in the lobby. We booked a pool access room but unlike other hotels this means just a room on ground floor level close to the pool not a room with direct access to pool. The room had 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a big lounge, 3 TVs but unfortunately the smallest shower room I have seen for a long time. Also the curtains of the main window had to be closed every time somebody used the bathroom. The room had very little natural daylight coming in, which made the room quite dark.
The breakfast was good and quite extensive, but note that there was no smoked salmon, no muesli, no low fat options and a very limited choice of cheese.
The hotel also has a very relaxed pool bar with 2 hours of Happy Hour every day.
The location of the hotel is bad if you don't have your own transport because Kamala beach is not the most beautiful of beaches in Phuket. It has coarse sand and is not as well kept as Kata beach. However, the hotel is within driving distance of Laem Singh beach and Surin beach which are beautiful. Surin is also excellent for evening dining on the beach.
Both my son and I got food poisoning whilst we were there, but cannot guarantee it was from the food in the hotel. We had to call a private doctor which was expensive. We paid 10,000 baht for 2 consultations with medication. The hotel also made sure they looked after us after they knew we were sick. The food and beverage manager came to the room on a regular basis to offer us light food options in order to get better. They really went out of their way to make us feel better.
Overall, we had a pleasant and relaxed stay but I think Phuket has better hotel options for the same price elsewhere. Consider this hotel when you are travelling with young kids only. The pool has a waterslide and a kids club but beware that some of the nicer activities are payable (250 baht for nail painting)
