“Perfect oasis for our honeymoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2010

We stayed in a pool villa at the Ayara Kamala Resort. When we arrived we were greeted with a welcome drink and some thai flowers before we were driven by their charming Tuk Tuk to our pool villa. (601). Our villa was decorated with beautiful fresh flowers.

The standard of the villa, the view, the pool and the sunset made this the perfect place for us to unwind on our last three days of our honeymoon.

The standard of service we received was great. I needed to get hold of some allergy medicine and the butler arranged for us to go to a chemist. We were driven there with her in the hotel's shuttle and she (the butler) translated from english to thai so that I could get the correct medicine.

The butler also arranged for tickets and a free shuttleservice to and from the Phuket Fantasea and when we wanted to go out to eat in Kamala town.

We had a spa package and we definitely recommend the spa for other guests.

If we have anything to put our finger on it would be the breakfast, which was a little limited on selection, especially different types of bread and meats. Also they were not very good at restocking when things ran out . But they did cook egg of your choice and the staff were very friendly.

Ayara Kamala is located about 3,5 km from Kamala beach so you have to go there by the hotels Tuk Tuk or private transport. Hence the resort is very private so if you are looking for a lively place it is not the right type of resort for you.

We would recommend the pool villa since the resorts main pool area is a little on the small side and the "beach" is not really a beach.

If you want a romantic luxurious getaway with stunning views one of the pool villas will be your perfect choice. It was ours!

We booked Ayara Kamala Resort and Spa - http://www.ayarakamalaresort.com/ which is rated as a five star hotel. We arrived with welcome drinks and towel and we got into our room within 15 minutes of registration.

We found that the communal pool area is a let down. It seems cramped as it’s right where the restaurant is and hasn’t got enough space for sun beds. Plus it hardly gets the sun nor does our balcony where our sun beds are. But we did ask to be moved and thankfully they gave in to our request after I have to tell them the story about my boyfriend wants to be in the sun in order to be tan like me rather than just a disgruntled couple who isn’t happy with the room.

The rooms were large and beautiful. It provides everything on toiletries etc. They do have a spa which unfortunately we haven't tried as we were aware we could get cheaper massages etc outside of the resort.

The breakfast served every morning is fine not great. Thankfully they've changed their background music to something soothing and instrumental rather than listening to Backstreet Boys and Aqua's Barbie Girl a few mornings before. Whilst eating and looking forward to a great day, an instrumental music is rather suited to that mood which I'm sure you'd agree.

They have complimentary rides to Kamala Beach and Patong. We have taken advantage of these a few times. The only bad comment I can add on this, is that we asked to be picked up from Patong one afternoon and they completely forgot about us. Thankfully we got our phones and the resort's number and they told us to get a tuktuk on the way back and they'll pay for it. Once or twice we had to book our own taxi as the complimentary rides were fully booked.

The receptionists or the local people who work here need a lot of English training. As a five star resort catered to Westerners and tourists, English is the medium of language normally widely used. We find that we have to repeat and break down the language into simplest and basic words of English in order for them to understand our request. It was slightly frustrating as service comes out very poor compared to all the places we’ve been.

The resort has a lot of potential but they need to address the communal pool area as it doesn’t really look like an appealing place to hang out. The main clientele of this resort is pretty much aimed at Koreans etc. Therefore they didn't really consider Westerners who would like to be out in the sun to enjoy the heat and weather.

The staff needs to be trained to speak better English.

The Christmas decorations on reception and the communal area made the resort looked tacky with different shades of neon colour. Careful selection and better taste is required to keep the resort looking chic and as a proper five star resort.

Beach is NOT a beach at all so do not be fooled. My boyfriend had to go through 250 steps (from the bay) just to get back up to the resort! They said that someone can take orders in the “beach” but no one was there at all. They were understaffed at the highest peak season of the year and they apologise for it daily. It was getting boring.

This resort works well for people who don’t sunbathe. People who only wants to stay in the room. People who only wants a room only whilst they venture out all day. But for the price they charged us at £180 per night with Agoda – it was a bit steep and ridiculous considering it was way below the standards of what we expected.

Do not pay attention to the other negative reviews! This is a great resort!

Checking out of another hotel @ 12pm and arriving early @ Ayara Kalama for check in at 12:30pm (check in is usually 2pm), my girlfriend and I were greeted by two Thai helpers who took our luggage from the taxi and prepared it to be moved to our room.

We were then directed to the lobby by them and on our way was kindly intercepted by a lovely young lady who guided us there for check in. She was our butler and assured that she would cater to our every request. Her english was quite good.

We then received welcome drinks (virgin mojito's) and some jasmine arranged bouquet. We waited for 1 hr for our room to be ready and in that time we checkout out the pool and restaurant and our butler explained the resort's amenities and services of which stood out, a laptop which could be borrowed (free of charge), free wi-fi and a scheduled bus to kamala and patong beaches. she also explained the attractions and events that were on at the time.

when our room was ready, we were directed to a shuttle which they use for transport around the condominium. yes the seats are wooden but not at all uncomfortable for the whole 5 mins necessary to get to our room! even for the elderly, children or injured (i have back problems) as so pointed out in other reviews!

the rooms are spectacular for the price! absolute comfort! king size bed, flat screen tv with cable, huge bathroom (very very clean!), balcony with 2 tanning beds and outdoor table and chairs for dining if tempted. the view was amazing. room 502 was further up the hill and so we were above a few other villas. aircon was sensational after a long day in the muggy heat! no problem at all with the rooms. the only thing that might take away from it is the fact that our room adjoined another through a wooden door which doesn't really trap all the sound out. unluckily for the other residents, we were the louder couple ;P (i think they messed around with our electricity because one night it turned off and on for 20 mins)

we made plans to visit a local market after settling into our room after check in. we arranged for a free drop off and pick up (after 1 hr) offered by the resort. after 52mins at the market, we waited for nearly 2 hrs for the driver who didn't show to pick us up. we then badly negotiated a tuk tuk to take us back to ayara for 200 baht! our butler affirmed that the driver returned to pick us up and claimed that he couldn't see us.
