“Fantastic Bed & Breakfast”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

A very well appointed bed and breakfast with a homely feel and great food. 5 minutes walk to the SS Politician pub, which also does great food. Looks out from the lounge to the Atlantic. Very friendly welcome. I have no hesitation in recommending it to you

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms - they are all excellent - two en suite - and one has a private bathroom but...

We stayed here while touring the hebrides and we could not fault it.
Plenty of off road parking, a very friendly welcome and a lovely room.
The room was sooo clean, I've never seen such a clean room. The bed was amazingly comfy so we both got an excellent nights sleep helped by the fact that there was no noise at all!
The breakfast was amazing, I had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, great start to the day.

Excellent little b&b, would definitely recommend. :-)

Unfortunately I have found that some of the recent rave reviews in TA are not really justified. Are people so easily pleased? However Oir an Mara really does justify a rave review. For a reasonable price, Mary MacInnes does more or less everything right for a small B & B. This is a modern bungalow and the rooms are warm, well furnished and the beds very comfortable. All the little details - like decent sized bedside tables with good table lamps - are spot on. The shower room in our room had a spacious walk in shower and good quality sanitary ware and lighting. TV and tea and coffee making facilities are of course provided. A particular bonus is the residents lounge/dining room which has a view to the sea and is a very pleasant and comfortable place to spend the evening after your visit to "Am Polititian" the local pub/restaurant just a 100 yards away. In the context of eating mention should also be made of the very good breakfast which includes all the usual items plus the local smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Yes it really is outstanding and would be number 1 in the TA ratings even if there were another 100 rather than just this one on Eriskay. If you want to stay at the southern end of the Western Isles this would be an excellent choice as you can easily get to Barra by car ferry just down the road and South Uist is easily accessible over the new causeway.

Room Tip: Room1 is at the rear; 2 and 3 are at the front.

This is an excellent place to stay. If I were going to the area again I would stay longer here and visit the South Uist area and even further North. As it was we were traveling down from Stornaway to Barra and then ferry to Oban. Ideal setting with beach walks and of course the Politician pub just 50 yards away so no problem with having a drink with the meal. As I had done something to my back, instead of an en-suite I took the room with a bathroom across the corridor so that I could soak in a bath. The bathroom was spacious and had a shower as well. The bathroom option was well worth the two steps across the corridor.

Room Tip: Don't be put off because the room is not an en-suite.

There was nothing really wrong with this B&B although we prefer to stay at places where we are welcomed into somebody's home rather than being a hotel guest. Mary welcomed us, showed us the room and that was the last we saw of her until much later in the evening.
The room was clean and functional but was reminisent of a Travel Lodge rather than a family run B&B. As stated in the title the breakfast was by far the best part of our stay. Mary seemed like a different person in the morning and there may well have been a reason for her lack of interaction with us the previous evening. Offering fresh fruit and serving hot food on hot plates really set this breakfast apart from others we had on our tour of the islands. The view from the big picture window could easliy have distracted us had the breakfast not been so enjoyable.

This place is perfect. It is a modern bungalow overlooking the sea. Eriskay is incredibly beautiful. We had a very smart, good sized room with good quality bed linen and towels. The place is spotlessly clean. The breakfasts were excellent. I would definitely come here again.

We were highly impressed with all aspects of our stay at Oir na Mara. The property is a modern bungalow of light and tasteful decor. We liked the large comfortable bed, the piping hot water and powerful shower, the M+S toiletries, the large bright and airy lounge with magnificent views, the available maps and books of the island and its history, the secure parking and the easy access both to the sandy beach and the nearby pub with grub.
We were served breakfasts of quality quickly and efficiently and we were provided with plenty of choice in the request forms the night before. We noted there was fruit and croissants in addition to that which we had ordered.
Mary was a warm and friendly host who recounted life on the island before the causeway arrived in 2001.We were allowed to take photos of the whisky bottles from the wreckage of the Politician, a story made famous by the film Whisky Galore and guidance was given on coastal walks.
Costs per night were very reasonable for such an outstanding experience.
Thank you Mary. Thank you Eriskay!
