Once again, it is a pity that there is no mark for "Good" only on tripadvisor! I will rate Kuilfontein "Very Good" because it is better than "Average", but I am not sure it is really "Very Good".
It is a good place for a stopover on the N1, the rooms are OK, the food is more than decent.
The main problem is that all the rooms are on the same alley, ... it's quite noisy if you happen to get one of the first rooms, especially since many people leave early (and there is not much privacy either).

This would seem the perfect stopover if, as we were, you are travelling in South Africa. We were very disappointed. Our arrival was not late - just before7pm - but it was already dark. Food had been put in our room ready to be warmed up. It was a most unappetising lamb stew full of bones and why would we want warmed up food at the end of a long day's drive? We had to eat perched on stools at the kitchen work top. The room was fine as was the bathroom. It is very quiet so we had a good night's sleep. However there was no breakfast included (evidently we needed to order a breakfast pack!) So we had a cup of tea and left as soon as possible.
This is the worst value I have had in South Africa. Very expensive for what was on offer.

Room Tip: Just make sure you know what is included in the price.

We stayed at The Paddocks at Kuilfontein. What a great stopover. The Paddocks is the self-catering part of Kuilfontein. The accommodation is very comfortable and very good pre-cooked meals can be ordered in advance.

We recently undertook the long drive from Cape Town to the Pilanesberg Game Reserve in the North West Province, which takes about 16 hours in total. Colesberg is about half-way, so we booked into Kuilfontein Stable Cottages for our two overnight stops. It was a great choice! The rooms are comfortable, spotlessly clean and each one is decorated in a different style. Ours had an Indian Theme, with brightly colored walls and furnishings...modern and interesting. The bed was very comfortable and the linens good. The cottages are situated on a working farm which has belonged to the same family for generations. The service was very good and the supper was excellent - we were phoned on the morning of both visits and asked to choose our main courses for dinner. On both occasions we were most pleasantly surprised; the food was absolutely delicious, very nicely presented and certainly restaurant quality. (We were expecting more homely fare!). The only cons are no TV in the bedrooms, and the breakfast, although adequate, was really not great...no cooked breakfast other than a boiled or coddled egg, (and no choice,) and limited choices of cereal, yoghurt etc.. However, they do take the trouble to start service really early...6.30...for all those who want to start the next leg of their journey early.

Room Tip: Just be aware that there is no aircon...the rooms are fairly cool, but have no windows offering a th...

If you are driving between Cape Town and Johannesburg, this makes a perfect overnight stop to break the journey.
Set on a working farm, the rooms are converted stables, but well-furnished and with all the necessary amenities expected.
There is a very welcome and well-stocked pub/bar where you can meet the other guests and the family before dinner. There is a choice of mains for dinner, together with a starter and dessert, all beautifully cooked and presented.
A similarly wide choice for breakfast, with fresh eggs from the farm chickens!
We were immediately made to feel at home, and will definitely include this on future stopovers.
The only nit-picking suggestion: Please improve the somewhat tasteless mint sauce for the delicious lamb!
Thank you Leigh and Penny, and the rest of the Southey family!

We stopped at Kuilfontein on our way down to the Cape Argus and were so impressed that we booked for on the way to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown for late June. We then found on our return trip to Jo'burg that we would arrive at Colesberg to break the journey so we phoned that morning and were able to book in for that evening. The rooms are great, a little quirky and very comfortable. We enjoyed walking around the extensive area and viewing the game, especially with Max for company. In fact, he even slept with us the second visit! Food is great and they know how to cater for vegetarians. The family are so welcoming and the ginger cat is a double of one of ours. Highly, highly recommended.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fun as they are converted stables. The back rooms are a little quieter first thing...

Arrived with 2 tired young kids after 7 hours in the car, and everything was forgotten once they met Maxi (little Jack Russell). The Accomodation, service and location was perfect, and located right off the N1. Disappointed that we will not be staying again on our way back from Plett.
