“100% Real Sri Lanka”
Reviewed June 4, 2012

This is the romance of Sri Lanka as you imagine it with your eyes closed. Salmon pink sunrises, misty mountains, purple thunderheads, cool verdant-green terraced tea plantations as far as the eye can see, huge exotic flowers drenched in vivid colours, trees groaning with tropical fruits, tea pickers in bright sarongs and saris with broad crimson betel-stained smiles and the kind of peace and tranquility that slows your heart rate to a gentle melody.

WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT RANGALA HOUSE?

SCENERY: This is the best you will find in any of the hill country offerings in Sri Lanka.

HOSPITALITY: Genuine. Nothing gushy. Honest concern and a desire to make your stay as pleasant as possible.

SERVICE: Discreet and observed. Don't expect a hovering helper buzzing around you. You simply create the space with a gesture or a look and someone is there in an instant.

FOOD: Honest, simple, wholesome, Beautifully prepared at your request and presented with style and care. Try and find that on a 5 star hotel buffet.

ROOMS: I hate home from home. Why would I go away if home turned me on that much? This is dream-home with the most spectacular setting on the planet. Ok, so the shower is in the bath and the hot water takes its own time to arrive, but while you wait you can see umpteen birds birds flit from flower to flower and study Phoebe's (Rangale's cat) hopeless stalking technique.

FACILITIES: The pool is big enough and deep enough. A huge bonus when you're tired after a long walk. There are also loungers, hammocks, cable television, darts, great books, etc yadda, yadda, yadda.

FITNESS CENTER: The walks on the surrounding tea estate are spectacular.

SUMMARY: If you like the predictable; group tours, hotel chains, tour buses, scheduled restroom stops and other classic human herding experiences this is not for you.

WHAT IS BAD ABOUT RANGALA HOUSE?

Nothing.

Beautiful property in the most amazing location.
Its about a 40 minute drive from Kandy on a road that is currently being widened. Well worth the drive!
Surrounded by tea plantations and overlooking the Knuckes mountain its a really relaxing place. The walk around the plantation is beautiful and well worth doing. Dinner and breakfast on the verandah is so relaxing and Anthony and his staff and so helpful. The food is really good and you can request whatever you want. The swimming pool is great and they also have wi-fi if you need it.
Our room had a huge bay windw so it was so lovely waking up in the morning to that view. If you come stay at least 2 nights since its a little bit out of the way.

The views are fantastic so as soon as we arrived we were very impressed. We came for a couple of nights which is perfect. The staff could not be more helpful and charming and the chef more accommodating to our requirements of not wanting hot spicey food. Our room was fine but the view made up for everything. The pool is set in the garden with lovely flowers and avocados growing around. There are some lovely walks around the tea plantations.

Room Tip: Definitely book a room with a view of the mountains

After a long, winding climb to the top of the hill (soon to be much quicker as the road is being widened and improved), we were blown away by the fabulous views from the veranda, across the hills and into the distance. Beautiful gardens, swimming pool and incredibly friendly and attentive staff made this a wonderful 3 days away from the heat and bustle of the lowlands. Can't recommend this small hotel enough and would love to come back again.

Room Tip: We had the 2 rooms either side of the veranda, with stunning views.

Rangala House is a little bit of paradise and our stay there really made our holiday. Our bedroom, with amazing views of the knuckles mountains and local tea plantations, was just stunning. Anthony and the team are attentive, warm and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble and we felt very spoilt and looked after during our stay. The pool is bliss, again with stunning views, surrounded by a beautiful garden. The house itself is tastefully furnished to a very high standard, yet has a lovely relaxing and homely feel. Breakfast and evening meals on the verandah watching the sun rise or set, were a real highlight and the quality and variety of dishes was excellent. We were originally booked to stay two nights and stayed for five - we simply didn't want to leave! Absolutely 5 star.

What to say about Rangalla House that hasn't been said already? Although probably not much, I want to endorse everything that's been written before this post, and reflect on some of our fondest Sri Lankan memories from our two days with Anthony and his capable crew at Rangalla. Stayed one night in the new studio - comfortable, funky, private and with stunning views - it was a treat. The second night was spent in Room 1 - bay window, over 180 degree views of the spectacular mountain setting. The food prepared by highly skilled Sebastian was something of a marvel, and such an indulgence - French inspired cuisine and Sri Lankan specialities - too diverse to describe in any detail - you need to sample to appreciate it. And the setting. Words defy its impact on arrival. We managed to do four long walks through the tea estates over our two night stay. It truly is like walking through a huge private estate, all by yourself...it was so beautiful to rise pre-dawn, walk amongs the tea hills while the sun rose, watch the local children riding in tuk-tuks to school, and saying 'good morning' to the local tea-pickers on their way to the estates. I could continue to heap praise on Anthony's fine Rangalla House set-up, but something must be left to the imagination. I implore anyone in the Kandy area to stay a couple of nights, you won't regret it!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Coming from Kandy , the journey (slightly more than one hour) takes you through Digana, Teldeniya and then left, through Udispattuwa and onto the Duckwari tea estate. At an altitude of just under 1000 metres above sea level, the situation is significantly higher up in the hill country than Kandy (500 metres) and the climate is noticeably cooler and fresher. Rangala House is situated on the edge of the Knuckles Forest Region - now classified as a world heritage site. This area is up-country from Kandy on the North Eastern side. The house faces almost due West on a steep jungly hillside. Spectacular sunsets are common. The view from the verandah is enormous - a 180º panorama from Hantana mountain to the South right round to the Duckwari tea estate and Knuckles Hills to the North and North East. Far down below in the valley, paddy fields give way to further hillsides and, on a clear day, you can even see Bible Rock many miles away. At night the lights of Kandy can be seen twinkling in the far distance. Behind the house, the tea estate rises steeply and is attractively dotted with shade trees and huge igneous boulders - common hill country features. The house is situated on the Teldeniya - Rangala mountain road, about 25 minutes up from Teldeniya. Cars are not often seen, traffic being mainly composed of three wheelers, country buses and estate tractors. The road is mostly in excellent condition up to Rangala House and beyond, but the section through to Corbett’s Gap is impassable to vehicles. ACCOMMODATION There is a large sitting room with double French windows, a stone fireplace and spacious dining area. The LED TV has many satellite channels as well as all the local stations and there is also a DVD player. For music lovers, there is a high quality sound system (classical and jazz CDs available) and a Roland electric piano. Broadband wifi is available in all room and is free of charge. Adjacent to the sitting room there is a western-style kitchen, fully equipped with all mod cons and finished in solid mahogany. Guests are welcome to come and talk to the resident chef - and perhaps pick up some tips on cooking curries Sri Lankan style! ... more   less
