“Best place to stay in Port Barton”
Reviewed August 4, 2011

I was quite disappointed when we arrived in Port Barton and found out that you could not swim at the main beach due to the jelly fish. After a couple of nights we travelled to the Coconut Garden Island resort and stayed for 3 nights and loved it. The resort is situated on its own island about 25 minutes from Port Barton. The beach is beautiful and you can snorkel right outside the resort. We stayed in a cottage that had two beds and was right beside the beach; they are basic, but this is all you need. The staff is very friendly and the food was great too. If you want to chill out and enjoy a quiet beach, this is an excellent place to stay.

There were 4 of us staying here - my girlfriend, two friends and I and we stayed in a 4 bed hut on the rocks. Couldn't fault this place, had such a great time. There's not much to do apart from sleep, snorkel, eat and relax but what else would you want to do here!? There is a nice jungle walking trail running behind the resort if you feel like exploring.

The service was great, some of the friendliest waitresses we've come across and the food is ridiculously good! There is a board in the restaurant which gives you catch of the day options according to what has been caught. It seems rare you could find an isolated paradise like this at such an affordable rate so if you fancy kickin back for a coupla days this place will do ya!

If you're debating whether to go or not, GO! One of the only truly isolated island resorts that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to stay at!

Its a 45minute boat ride from Port Barton, San Vicente. Coming from Puerto Prinsesa, you need to ride a jeepney from San Jose Terminal (there is only one scheduled trip everyday and it leaves around 9am). If you're coming from Sabang or El Nido, you can contact the resort and ask for a boat pick up.

The rooms are very clean but basic and the rates are extremely cheap and affordable. The place is not crowded at all, the food is excellent a little above average (around 230-370php for dinner) but that's expected since the resort is on an island and supermarkets are not that accessible. There is no electricity but they provide power supply from 18:00 to 21:30. Some rooms have solar powered lights and fans that can last up to 8 hours. I didnt have any problems with mosquitoes or sand flies during my entire trip.

The whole staff was very nice, friendly, attentive, extremely accommodating and at the same time non-invasive. Everyone greeted you with a smile, always asked if you needed anything. I actually left my phone on my way back to Port Barton, and they chartered another boat to Barton just to give it back to me! All around excellent service I tell you this people are awesome!

We stayed here at the suggestion of some other travelers that we met in El Nido. We were in El Nido for a week and had a few days before our flight to Cebu so we thought we'd give it a try. We called and made a res. (It was difficult to communicate with the girls so be patient.) Call them for a pick up once you arrive in Port Barton (250 pesos each). We enjoyed our stay. After spending a week in noisy and busy El Nido it was so peaceful we decided to stay for 5 days. We enjoyed the beach, kayaking, hiking and lazing in the sun. We were in a cabin and it think it was about $21/night. Rooms were basic but adequate. Very peaceful sleeping at night. We enjoyed the food. It may be a little more expensive, however, after a day or so we decided to share meals as they were so large. We liked that they change their menu every day unlike some places that hold you captive and do nothing to vary their menu. The girls who work here were some of the sweetest we've met in our 5 week travels in the Philippines. The owner, on the other hand, kept to himself and didn't say much - it seemed a little strange, but I guess that's just way he is. I didn't think he treated them very well just by the way he spoke to them. The only negative I can think of is that we were there 3 nights before they made up our room or gave us fresh towels, but this could be on the owner's instructions.

We had a booking for few nights in this resort. When we arrived, a smiling lady welcomed us to Coconut Garden and told us that unfortunately they didn't have the room we booked. Some guest had decided to stay one more night and they couldn't say no to guest so they thought we could sleep one night in a tent. The next morning there would be a room for us - giving that the guest didn't decide to stay for one additional night. The owner from our previous resort, Secret Paradise Retreat, took us to the resort and was just as surprised because his resort manager had confirmed to Coconut on the very same morning that we were coming. It was Valentine's Day and the staff from Coconut had no idea how to solve "the problem". Resort owner from Secret Paradise gave instructions to staff to organize us a new accommodation and at least provide a cool drink.

Coconut Garden didn't look too nice either: they have a poor monkey on a leash and a small beach is packed with bungalows and rooms. If you're looking for relaxation and some service, go somewhere else. I'd definitely recommend Secret Paradise for their beautiful beach & rooms and decent service.

I'm almost desperate to write a review of this place as it seems that only one other person has taken the time to do so on Trip Advisor. We would have loved to have known other peoples experiences of the Coconut Garden Island Resort on Cacnipa Island before we booked out trip, so are hoping that by posting our own review it will help others considering staying. (It might not have been reviewed before because the resort isn't listed on TA, so I've had to write a review under the attraction of Cacnipa Island as the other reviewer did). Anyway where to start...

Cacnipa Island is a beautiful island about 45 mins by boat from Port Barton or 3 hours or so from Sabang and 5 hours from El Nido. It is also a very good stopping point for a few days en route from Sabang to El Nido or vice versa as you can get a boat to either in either direction.

The setting is idyllic on a small stretch of well kept beach, backed by very well kept gardens surrounded by coconut trees. There are a number of cottages scattered about, which are all on stilts and also a larger block which contains some smaller rooms.

Don't expect the Hilton for GBP £15 a night (smaller rooms are even cheaper!), but for the setting it is worth every penny as there is never more than about 15-20 people staying so you pretty much have the place to yourself!

The rooms are basic, but more than ample for the money, with a cold water shower (it's never freezing cold water in the Philippines however!), and a bed covered with a mosquito net.

Electricity runs from 6pm - 9pm from a generator, but there is also a solar powered light & fan that can be used for a number of hours until the solar energy runs out, but it's a small price to pay for living on a desert island!

Beach has a few sand flies, which can be a pain, but the staff do their best to combat this by raking the beach each morning & lighting small fires, which works to an extent. Hammocks are also provided beneath some coconut trees & sun loungers are available too.

Some reviews I found on other websites criticised the Swiss owner for being rude, and although it is true that he doesn't go out of his way to be overly friendly, it seems to just be his way & he tends to keep himself to himself. In fact when we spoke to him, he was very helpful, just lacking in social skills a bit perhaps! The rest of the staff however were exceptional friendly & looked after us very well.

Breakfast & lunch can be ordered from the the restaurant (good food too - a bit more pricey than some places, but on par with El Nido & still vastly cheaper than Western prices!). Evening meals are served between 6 & 8pm, and they put a board up where you can order from a menu (they change the menu daily so you won't get bored!) before 3pm, which is understandable considering the size of the resort.

The Coconut Garden Island Resort feels like a bit of commune in a way & you soon get to know your fellow guest as it is such a small place. There are also chickens, cockerels, a couple of pet dogs & even a resident monkey which is great as it makes you feel like you are existing stranded on a tropical island!

It may not be everyone's cup of tea if you are looking for luxury, but if you don't mind roughing it a bit to stay on such a remote & stunning setting far away from the crowds then book a stay at the Coconut Garden!
