“Best of KZN!”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

I grew up in Durban, now I live in Geneva and Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is without a doubt world class - among the best I have experienced! Simply superb food with irreplaceable preamble by Richard Poynton to ensure your mouth is watering before you even tuck in! The hotel itself is a jewel! Every unique detail makes for an uncommonly personal stay of infinite comfort. The views are breathtaking and long walks in the company of the resident dogs is pure nourishment for the soul! Wonderful beyond any singing of it...to borrow Paton's praise ;-)

Room Tip: The unique decor makes every room a special treat!

Our stay at the farmhouse was fantastic. The staff were very friendly, helpfull and attentative. The walks around the farm a must and our very helpfull guide Uju - the golden retriever was just gorgeous. Probably the best bit - the food. Totally amazing experience.

There are no words to describe our 3 night stay at this amazing place, the food, service, views was breathtaking. The staff went out of there way to accomodate my pregnant wife, they even found a drink to help her with the morning sickness. This is the perfect place to get away from the hustle of city life, nothing was a problem for the staff and we will certainly be back. We stayed in one of the cottages and the extra price paid for this room was well worth it.

Room Tip: Try to book the cottage, views are amazing

So you like fine dining? (tick)
Like great wines? (tick)
Like country houses far enough to escape, close enough to get to? (tick)
Like to relax and unwind? (tick)
Like a mountain walk? (tick)
You have to go to Cleopatra.

Your visual and taste senses will be entertained beyond belief.
Just take a browse through their beautifully designed cookery book, and you'd get an essence of the calibre of dining you'll experience.

And during the day, take a walk, read a book on the deck... and lap up the country air.

Recommended. I've been 5 times :)

Standard Roms are much Used and in Bad condition. Especially beds. Bath and Toilette Old and unclean. Despite the wonderful Location and Garden and the Great Food, Rates are Way too High. Campest requirier a Redo.
The Eigeninteresse Dinners are a spectacle and Great. But the 5 Courage Dinner Starts at 8 pm only.

Cleopatra's, or as we call it, Cleo's, is a must. Set amongst the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains, near to water, with the most amazing views and walks. I was fortunate enough to spend 1 night here but try and stay for longer as it is worth it. The staff are attentive and very friendly. We arrived in time for high tea, yummy. The rooms are eclectic but very comfortable. It was cold when we were there so the heaters were swicthed on as were the electric blankets so when we arrived back from dinner eveything was lovely and cosy warm. Dinners, as are all the meals at Cleo's was a treat. 5 courses and all delicious. Attention to detail is fantastic. I could just sit on the deck overlooking the trout dam for days. Go, it is worth every cent.

Room Tip: Room number 8 is lovely and away from the rest if you want full privacy.

After a week's treking and camping in the Drakensburg Mountians this was a delightful place to come and relax and enjoy some wonderful meals. It was a lovely afternoon when we arrived and we enjoyed sitting on the veranda over looking the trout lake with a pot of tea and home made scones. We stayed in the Scandanavian room which was comfortable, brightly decorated and in keeping with the traditional farmhouse style.
All the staff were really friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We had a very pleasant walk in Highmoor Park in the afternoon with some great views. Sadly the next day was very wet and misty so we walked all day in the wet with no views, enjoyable but not quite what we'd planned! Thank goodness we were going back to a nice warm hotel and not to a tent! The first night there had been a camp fire by the lake which we loved sitting round (though no one else seemed to come and enjoy it!), very disappointed that it was too wet for this on the second night. However, this was compensated for by a magnificent dinner and excellent wine. You are invited down into the wine cellar to select your wine which is great, much better than looking at a list.
As others have said 2 nights here is ideal as it is quite remote and there are limited things to do, we'd done the main walks in our couple of days. It's well worth a visit though and is a unique and special hotel of charm and character.
