We decided to stay at Spring Lake because of the positive reviews it received. Irene was a good hostess; accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly. We were able to save $8.00 on our trip to Algonquin Park (which is around 15 min. away from the hotel). The restaurant (which I kept hearing great reviews about) was conveniently located and reasonably priced – although you may have to wait around 20 - 30 min. to receive your meals as they have a very small wait and cooking staff. The food was pretty tasty although the amounts were quite small.
Despite the positives, there were certainly many things we were not impressed with and we were disappointed to find out first hand the things other reviewers neglected to mention.
First off, yes, there is a ‘lake’ you can canoe/paddle boat/kayak with. However, the ‘lake’ is merely a small pond and the canoe was leaking which we had the unfortunate task of finding out once we got to the middle of the pond. The canoe was half filled with water once we reached shore – quite a scary experience…
The room itself is quite dated. For the price you are paying, you should expect better. The carpet is thin and old, the appliances (heater/fan, fridge are older so it takes quite a while to start up). The bathroom was quite nice, but check to make sure all the plumbing works as the toilet made a lot of noise when it was being flushed. If the price of the room matched the quality of the room, I would have been much happier.
The greatest disappointment we discovered was that the walls are PAPER THIN. Every thump you will hear. My husband can sleep through World War III happening in the bedroom, but even he was bothered by the noise outside (you WILL hear people talking, walking outside - below, above, stairways – EVERYWHERE!). It’s especially annoying when you’re trying to relax and sleep-in, and people are waking you up at 7:00 in the morning.
Overall, not the greatest ‘resort’ experience, but probably not the worst…. yet.
