This region is beautiful and the Chassezac river is the less visited alternative to the Ardeche, with amazing swimming, crystal water, fantastic gorges and great activities for the family.
We loved Les Bancs - just 5 minutes to walk down the hill to the river and enjoy the gorgeous waters of the Chassezac - very kid friendly as well. Les Bancs is a small hamlet overlooking Chambonas and a 10 min drive to the facilities of Les Vans. We loved the mix of rural tranquility, access to the river and other activities, and only 30 mins from the more touristy Ardeche river if you really want. Les Vans is a thriving little town with plenty on offer for everyone and lots of nice eateries to make the most of.
The accommodation at Les Bancs suited us really well. We are a family of 5 so the 2 bedrooms worked fine for us (3 boys in 1, adults in the double next door) but any more and it would start to become a real squeeze. Phillipe was a very welcoming and helpful manager and the Gite is well equipped with everything you will need. The downstairs space is open plan and works well for a holiday.
This missed out on a 5 star rating just because there were a couple of surprises on arrival. There is a requirement for a 300 euro deposit, which I didn't spot in the advert and apparently we were supposed to bring our own bedding! Fortunately, Phillipe sorted us out quickly, but this is a very bizarre arrangement for anyone flying out there. Lastly, the ad mentioned that the Gite had internet connection, which we assumed meant WIFI, so we didn't bring DVDs or downloaded films, but I guess that the ad simply referred to there being an internet signal for your phone!
However, overall this was really good value for money and our kids loved it!
