“Beautiful campsite in the middle of the Réserve Naturelle des Gorges de l'Ardèche”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

Very peacefully located in the middle of Réserve Naturelle des Gorges de l'Ardèche.
Friendly, helpfully owners.
Temperature was really hot (40°C) during our vacation, but the campsites is located in a forest, plenty of shade.

You can go and swim in the Ardèche river. But you have to follow a rocky path to the 'beach', it takes 20 minutes to get down and at least 30 minutes to get back to the campsite.

It's a great location to discover the Ardèche and the Provence. It's a 10 minute drive from the beautiful caves Aven d'orgnac.

My boyfriend and I flew to Marseille, hired a car and headed to Mille Etoiles in June 2012. We had a wonderful 5 days staying in one of their yurts. I chose the place as we didn't have time to drive anywhere so needed the equipment for camping so this fitted the bill. I also was searching for somewhere that wasn't a regimented campsite as many of the French sites seem to be. So it is a rustic style place, a little ram-shackled but that was part of the charm.

Nadine and her husband were lovely - they don't speak any English but my GCSE French got us through and we had great kind of chats, worked out what we wanted, showed us walks....

Location - simply stunning. Set in a woodland that leads out to the top of the gorge with amazing views across to the other side and the river below. There are a number of circular walks and it's quite a clamber down (quite tough if you had kids) but great for us. We took a picnic and sunned ourselves on the rocks watching kayaks go by. We also did an amazing walk that took us out through meadows filled with butterflies, down to the river and then followed the river along - definitely for the more accustomed walker - some bits you have to clamber and hold on to rails but we loved it! La bastide de Virac is a quaint little village with a fab restaurant (we paid about £35 pp including half a bottle of wine and a 4 course meal). Vallon Pont D'arch isn't far with big supermarkets, and a nice little tourist town. You can book the Kayaking here (13km, 24km or 32km - we did the 24km down river, which was great fun).

Yurts - each Yurt has it's own little area and is set on a platform off the ground and a little kitchen area in a kind of shed bit set apart from the Yurt. It had everything we needed - gas stove, fridge, pots, pans etc. The Yurt had a big bed and we rented bedding as we were flying from the UK. We had a nose in some of the other yurts and each are furnished differently, some better than others.

Facilities - the place was pretty empty when we were there so can imagine there would be queues if really busy. The bathrooms were great, clean, good hot water and were large all in one toilets and showers. There were some more toilet cubicles nearer the cafe bit too.

Food - you can pre-order breakfast, which was yummy. We dined on moule frites and the pizza's were good too (which we pre ordered that morning). We mainly cooked up feasts ourselves.....

All in all a wonderful nature adventure and would definitely go back ;o)

On the further ratings - obviously not a 5* hotel but in it's category excellent

We spent a week at this campsite, having pitched our own tent and loved it! It was a welcome relief returning to the peace and quiet of the campsite each day, after our hectic days enjoying the local activities. Our children (9 and 5) loved it too, finding plenty to do at the playground, playing with other children and cycling round the local area.

As for the owners, Nadine and Laurent - they were extremely friendly and helpful (as was Edie the au pair, who recommended several places of interest to us in the local area). We were offered 3 pitches to choose from (all of which were extremely large) and which were beautifully shaded (which was a must in 40 degrees heat).

The site was well organised, with a clean 'bathroom' block and washing machine and dryer. Each day we placed an order for baguette, croissant etc with Nadine and picked it up from the restaurant next morning. Eating out at the restaurant was good too, with extremely reasonable prices, great pizza and wine and a lovely terrace from which to enjoy the warm Summer nights. The site also had a number of BBQs, which you could use.

We will definitely be visiting again and have already recommended the place to lots of our friends.

Booking through 'Experience Ardeche' we spent a wonderful two nights in this charming place. Having read one or two negative reviews I was initially concerned about our stay. Turns out that I shouldn't have worried. Some people are determined to complain regardless of the venue.
Having stayed in 5 star luxury in Bangkok, London & the USA, I can honestly say we loved this place for the 'back to nature' experience.
Seemingly in the middle of nowhere yet only 20 mins from civilisation this place has to be seen to be believed. Based on a nature reserve surrounded by trees & just 20 mins walk from the ardeche river, the location is perfect.
The yurt was wonderful, the bedding clean & the mattress very comfortable. Our own fridge, kitchen type area & electricity was a bonus!
The owners were incredibly friendly & helpful despite our shameful inability to speak much French. They went out of their way to assist us, nothing was too much trouble.
The shower block appeared new & offered hot showers, sinks & toilets within individual bathrooms, clean & regularly attended to. We noticed washing machines too!
Breakfast consisted of croissants, butter, jams, French bread, hot chocolate. There was also a fair selection on the menu for evening dining. We loved the home made pizza & the wine was inexpensive & delicious.
We would love to return, next time with the extended family. This lovely location was so wonderful & the perfect tonic after too long in London!

this a great campsite which in a very busy area feels like in the middle of no where had a great 3 days here two of which where in one of their fantastic yurts (book early)
on top or ardeche gorge so is a stiff climb up after a lovely swim which other than the large amount of canoeists that swarm the river you have banks to yourselves and ur fellow campers
on site restaurant was lovely with moule frite my personal fav and at a very good price of 8.50 euro for hundreds of mussels :))) would recomend this site to anyone or wants to glam up and still enjoy the camping experience . my lovely lady also loved it was a surprise stay as we where on a camping holiday but wanted to give her a bit of a treat she deserves it :))
had a great time and loved the site and people and area
toilet area was basic but most definatley clean and all that was required

Facilities do not reflect those described on the website. We booked a yurt for 1 week that cost over £425 so hence I had high expectations that the yurt and campsite were well equipped and comfortable and clean. I could not have been more mistaken. The yurt was filthy, the double bed was broken and the mattress was damp and mouldy. The kitchen utensils and plates supplied were dirty and old. Really not the welcome we were expecting especially as previous reviews had appeared quite positive.
I did have some suspicions before we saw our yurt as the owner Nadine insisted we pay the full balance for the week stay before we were allowed to view the yurt and area. Therefore we had no choice otherwise we would have lost our deposit.
The website indicated that the campsite was child friendly and that there were play facilities for kids. far from it, there was little for the kids apart from an old rusting slide and wooden pirate ship that had rusting nails sticking out of it.
Don't be deceived this is no luxury campsite and is quite the opposite. Also it's miles away from anything else and a fair drive about 15 k to the nearest supermarket. Also you certainly won't see 1000 stars as its in a heavily wooded area with tree cover. 1000 wasps more like in our experience over breakfast

Hello, I am surpised that your yurt was dirty, as before leaving each client must clean their fridge, gas cooker... and also wash the dishes.
As the yurts are on a natural wooden platform, they have a similar appearance to a dirty surface. As for the bed and matress ( covered with a matress protector and changed for every client ) , if we knew it was broken, we would certainly not hesitate to replace it, hence we encourage communication in these circumstances.
The yurt payment : all our clients pay a deposit 1 month before their arrival, it is always done like this for our yurt rentals.
The children have 3 hectares in which to play and use their creativity and imagination. They also have two parks complete with seesaws, climbing cage, a little plastic slide, the boat ( which all the children adore ) , a ping pong table ( we supply rackets and balls free of charge ) , two spaces for playing ball, bike riding ( without risk as there are no cars within the campsite ) ...
On our website it is clearly indicated that we are situated within a natural reserve ( so isolated and with many trees ) we are a two star campsite and not a five star luxury campsite.
Its a shame that you didnt see the starry sky as it is magnificent.
As for the wasps, I apologise but they are an unconveniance of summer that we can not do much about.

Nadine

What an amazing place! We booked 3 nights and ended up staying for the rest of our time in France it was just so lovely. The walk down is a good 20minute walk but that's what makes it so special and peaceful.
The river is great for swimming, fishing and just chilling. The Camp has such a great atmosphere and the communal areas are so welcoming and comfortable. The new shower block is gorgeous! The pitches are spacious & lovely and all under trees which made sleeping a treat. (not at all like your stereotypical overcrowded French camp site)
We got to know Nadine, Lauren and Ede very well over the week and fell in love with them all!
We will definitely be back and would recommend to anyone who wants a friendly, peaceful location and a stone throw from river Ardeche itself.
