Maliba Mountain Lodge

At least part of our Maliba Lodge experience was the journey through the Golden Gate, and a night in Clarens before reaching our destination. The drive through sandstone cliffs lit by the late afternoon golden light is a photographer's dream and not to be missed by enthusiastic 'snappers.' The magnificent scenery continues all the way to lodge with many more photo opportunities as long as you have tame driver who will stop for you!
The situation of the lodge, nestled in a valley between the mountains, is breathtaking and is a view that can be seen from the verandah of every suite and most especially from the deck of the main building. We had a friendly welcome from all the staff, and it was quite clear that they all work at the lodge with a deep sense of pride. Every duty is performed with a genuine smile and that one aspect alone sets Maliba apart from other lodges where the staff can seem cold and unconcerned about the quality of their service.
Activites - well, at best you can sit, chill and admire the view (or take photos as the light on the mountains changes a 100 times a day) or for the more energetic, take a pony ride, a hike along one of the many walks to waterfalls and other view sites or a swim in one of the natural pools. So take a book, a camera, sun screen and walking shoes and that just about covers it.. Oh yes, and, dont worry about keeping warm in the colder months. Every beautifully appointed room is complete with underfloor heating, as well as a fireplace, electric blankets and a heated towel rail. And...I haven't mentioned the food. Well, the most discerning diner will not be disappointed here either as the meals prepared by the chefs is an experience in itself. Nearly every meal is a work of art - in fact you're not sure whether to eat it or photograph it - I did both.

Even though Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa- it feels like a totally different country! The stunning scenery started at Sterkfontein Dam all the way up the mountains. You think it cannot get better.....and then you find Maliba lodge-wow. A beautiful luxury lodge right in the mountains. From the smiley faces of the staff, the delicious food, the view from our suite, to the sore bums after the horse ride- we loved it all. Thank you to Rose and her team for making it so special.

What a surprise to find something so extraordinary - we were just looking for a place to spend two nights somewhere not too far from Jhb, and we found Maliba Lodge by chance on the internet. What a way to start the year. Even all the rain never spoilt it for us. The views are magnificent, the service and accommodation outstanding and the food wonderful. Although we try never to go back to the same place twicw, we just have to go back in winter.

Upon arrival at Maliba lodge the first thing we noticed, besides the spectacular scenery, were all the friendly faces, from the security guard at the gate to the bar lady behind the bar. Every single one greeted us with such warmth

The room was sooo nice. Every detail to perfection! The balcony amazing and the deck spectacular. And the view!! WOW!! What more can one say.. The food we had the entire weekend was amazing. They even through in a complimentary bottle of wine with dinner! Hats off to the chef for preparing amazing dishes.

In a room filled with candles and rose petals (done by Maliba staff), infront of the fireplace with the fruitplate, cream and bottle of wine I sat down on one knee and my girlfriend at that time agreed that she would marry me. WOW !! What a feeling!! The note on the bed with rose petals saying “I lov u” will always be remembered.

Thank you Maliba Lodge

We booked 1 night, and even before we got out of the car I was already making plans to stay longer, the lodge manager sorted out our reservation changes dealt with my crazy credit card and never stopped smiling. I would find it hard to believe that Olympus would have better food, service or a more spectacular view! Thank you thank you thank you for an awesome couple of days

We made use of the mid week special at Maliba Mountain Lodge as a treat before the hectic new yea began and had an amazing time. Even though it was rainy for most of the time we still managed a few great walks and were never claustraphobic.

The only mechanical sound we heard was a bakkie on one day, otherwise the rain and the sound of the river lulled us to sleep every night, and birds made charming background noise during the day. The view is incredible and keeps changing as the mist lifts, shifts and comes down again. We lay in the day beds on our patio wrapped up in blankets and just watched the view constantly changing for a whole afternoon.

We stayed for three nights at Maliba Mountain Lodge in December 2010 and we enjoyed it to its best. Unfortunately the rainy weather didn't allow to have some hikes in the surrounding mountains. Therefore we could concentrate on the "inner" amenities of the Lodge: great common lounge, fantastic deck, gorgeous huts, excellent food, attending service. To keep it short: Maliba Mountain Lodge is simply brilliant. We'll be back (when the rain has gone).
