Very clean and comfortable lodges with a breathtaking view. Welcoming and helpful staff. Cosy restaurant.
Great elephant tracking although price a little expensive but well worth it! We went out in the early morning, visiting local farms to see if the elephants had been seen recently. Then we drove through the bush and finally found a group of three males which we approached on foot. Very experienced guides helped us to get up close.
Note: You leave your car at the bottom of the mountain and are taken up in a 4X4 with your luggage. We had a puncture before we arrived and it was fixed for us by the time we returned to our car.

This location of this gorgeous place is magnificent!

We came only to book there very well and professional done HIMBA tour ( big recommendation) but because the manager convinced us with his huge smile to stay one night!!

We loved it.. What a lovely people and how proud they can be of what they achieved. The service is very informal and still I think high standard. The food was the only thing that I can comment on that can be improved... It's to average for such a great place!

Swimming pool with the best view, the room are heated by a guy that burns your Donkey, even the ride up in the 4wheel is already a experience!

Next to all this, this is a investment in the community by providing jobs but effects the villagers and even the Himba's for the better!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! We won't forget this magical place and your friendliness.

Dramatic setting but they can not justify the rates they charge. The decor and the food quality is very poor. The (expensive) desert elephant tracking experience is more a visit of the surrounding communities to see how they interract with the wildlife with very limited sightings of the elephants as the guides want to go back ASAP. The lack of lighting in the rooms and the use of white power saving bulb in the dining room are very unpleasant.

We stayed in the Grootberg Lodge in summer 2010 with two teenagers in the age of 12 and 15 for 5 nights. It was by far the best location and experience we made during a 4 week vacation in namibia. The place and surrounding is remote (don't expect tv, internet-access, air conditioning or even mobile phone connection), but in return you get a good piece of 'real africa'. We made in fact all tours this lodge offers, from rhino and elephant tracking to horse-back riding, sundowner-tours and a tour to a Himba village nearby. And all of it was worth-while. My kids will remember these days for her whole life-time, getting so close to wildlife free roaming in such in impressive landscape and we felt safe during all these days. But what makes this lodge so special is the team caring for the guests. From the ladies in the restaurants to the guides and trackers or the young gentlemen who went horseback-riding with the kids or the gentlemen operating the fires for hot water in the showers or carrying our baggage. These people do really care about their guests. And I am more than thankful for Gabriel who guided us during the tour to the Himba-Village. While a lot of these tours around the Himba culture seemed pretty much 'touristic' to us he gave us a very good guidance so we felt comfortable to meet these proud people on a respectful basis and felt comfortable during the conversation and interaction with them. So if there is one place in whole namibia I would recommend (especially for families) - this is it. And make sure to stay long enough, moving in and out in 1 or 2 days - you will miss a big part of the beauty and specialty of this place.

If you're looking for something different , then this could be it. Grootberg lodge is situated on top of a hill on a pass. You park on the pass (cars are guarded), and they drive you up the crazy, steep little track to the top, where the views are breathtaking. The staff were very friendly and eager to please, and the food/ambience of the dinners was lovely. Quite a romantic setting.

We did the Himba trip, which wasn't as tacky as I was expecting it to be, and was actually quite fun. The lodge will become a community affair in a few years time, so is worth considering for this reason alone.
