This was an absolutely memorable meal: each course, and each dish, brilliantly cooked, and for an extremely reasonable price (especially if one has one of the associated drinks options to accompany the food). The staff were also excellent. Thanks go to our B&B, the L'echappee Belle, for arranging our meal. The B&B is a good place to stay when visiting the Falaen area.

Our B and B made reservations for us and it was early October, and we had a very pleasant table near the fire place. My steak was actually cooked on the fire. The food was well prepared and delicious and filling. Salad, some vegetables, steak, my wife had an mushroom omelet, of course bread, all can be highly recommended.
Several tables were taken by residents of the village. They were friendly and willing to talk with us. The whole atmosphere was relaxing. The best part was talking with the young son of one of the staff members, having him share his school drawings and also teach me some French.
The evening was most enjoyable and the food was excellent.

But,
we had stopped at the restaurant earlier that same day, hoping to have lunch. There were no other customers in the restaurant and we left without eating, having gotten the feeling that we had very much imposed on the staff. My impression of southern Belgium is that life moves at a very different speed and we visitors need to adjust to that. If you can adjust and get good service, you will love La Fermette. If you expect a modern, city-style restaurant or if they, for whatever reason, ignore you, then the visit will be miserable. Good luck finding another restaurant within 15 kilometers, though!

Taking advice from other travellers that we should reserve a table in advance my wife and I booked a table at La Fermette for the last night of our touring holiday in August 2012. We wrote before leaving home requesting a table in the main front restaurant. After receiving no reply we followed up the e-mail and did infact receive a written confirmation of our booking. When we arrived on the evening of the booking we were met with some surprise, there was no record of our booking on the list of diners and on presentation of the e-mail confirmation the waitress went off to speak to the owner. We felt we were treated rudely and were told in no uncertain terms that there was no space in the main restaurant (despite there being empty tables on view) and that the only table that could be made available was a small table in the uninviting back room. Had we not got something in writing we believe we would not have been offered a table at all and despite her written confirmation the owner refused to honour the booking. We left without eating as we decided the rude reception was a strong indication of the level of service we would be likely to receive. A very disappointing end to an otherwise enjoyable holiday. We will not be returning to La Fermette and will warn our friends accordingly.

We were spending a few days in the Ardennes, and having heard good things about this place, the two of us decided to go to La Fermette in Falaën to celebrate a personal event, a beautiful rustic little restaurant in the middle of a beautiful setting in the middle of nowhere.
We phoned and booked a table (that is definitely necessary). What I failed to do though, was to instruct on exactly which table I wanted, and in which room. We were punisshed by being allocated a minuscule table at the back of the room (you can't even see it on the pictures on the website as it is hidden behind the last table in the room with the weird wooden wall), a room my partner called "the chinese-take-away room", which describes quite well the atmosphere of it. A complete contrast to the warm and cozy front room, which has a beautiful fireplace, nice decorations and furnishings, and a very inviting atmosphere. As there were no other tables free, and this was REALLY horrible, we left - unfortunately. We'll go back again to taste the food, hopefully. So my tip: make sure you book a table in the front room, and don't even bother going there if you can't get one. (Can't give feedback on much else, as we left without dining)
