“Met our needs well...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2014

We stayed at Residence Le Ruitor as part of a 4 day ski-ing break in Sainte Foy between Xmas and NY 2013. The service prior to our arrival was great with all our questions promptly answered by email. Check-in was all very straightforward although we arrived off peak. Staff were very friendly and helpful relatively inexperienced and knowledge of the resort itself was quite limited. The apartment was as described and quite comfortable, although we had a couple of power cuts and the wi-fi didn't work for most of the time. Neither caused us huge problems and staff did all they could to fix the issues, which were largely out of their control. The ski-room lockers for drying boots etc were extremely useful as was the underground parking. Daily bread to order, the Raclette set and games to borrow, weather information etc was all very useful. The spa facilities were very pleasant although very noisy at peak times with lots of young children in the pool in particular. The beds were - as others have commented - firm, but that is very much a matter of preference, which suited us anyway. The sitting area could do with another comfortable chair as the sofa only fits three people. I would say 4 people is the comfortable maximum for the apartment we had even though it could sleep 6. I would also suggest asking for an apartment in building A as building B has not direct lift access and involves a lift to the second floor, a walk to building B (albeit inside) then another lift. These apartments are really well placed for the slopes and the main lift and we would certainly stay here again.

The Residence Eco Le Ruitor is extremely well located in Ste-Foy. Only a short distance from the main lift with a convenient shuttle bus to get there in the morning and ski-in at the end of the day. The apartments are very comfortable, attractive and well equipped. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the facilities are excellent. Despite the small size of the resort there is plenty of skiing both on an off piste. It's a great resort for families as the town is small and it doesn't attract those looking for clubs and bars in the evening. (full disclosure - we are owners of an apartment in this building - that's how much we love it!)

We drove from the home counties in the UK and stayed for 7 nights. The presentation and finishing touches at le Ruitor make it feel genuinely 4*- we couldn't agree more with the rating. The panoramic views from our west facing balcony were spectacular.

We didn't mind the 300m walk to the slope with 1 infant and 2 older children under 5. We could have taken the free shuttle bus but really - 300m!! It was quicker to walk and more fun for the children. Makes for a nice warm up and cool down.

The ski resort is superb for families and just what we required as our children were on ski's for the first time. Minimal lift queues, relaxed atmosphere and well priced adult lift passes. Children under 7 years old ski for free.

Meanwhile back in the residence, the pool was great for the kids when the weather was at it's worst and the sauna and steam room were spot on for us adults seeking a bit of R&R. Very clean, very nice environment to unwind although unfortunately not open all day...and that brings me on to the downsides.

The in-room Wifi was dead slow so don't plan to depend on it - take a book or gaze at the stunning views instead. The reception opening hours are peculiar and having only one toilet in the apartment made for a bit of queuing at times but all these things you adapt to quickly. And the hard bed thing - it's really not worth a mention I don't think. It's a bed and it's firm. We slept just fine. I wouldn't have mentioned it if others hadn't brought it up.

We stayed week 7 for 9 days of skiing. We are from Sweden and have two children 11 and 10 and would count ourselves as experienced skiers. We love off piste, fresh snow, no people, lots of trees, no queues. We got all of that here.

Digression, but we ended up in Sainte Foy by accident as we thought it was connnected to Les Arcs. It is not (don't ask!). We had reservations but we had the best skiing here that we'd had in a decade. Firstly, it snowed regularly which opened up the full range of off and on piste. 4 lifts sounds nothing and if you stay on the pistes you may find it repetitive after a few days. If you can cope going off (into marked and controlled non groomed areas) then with snow it is simply fantastic. Skiing was 5 star and the village charming.

For the hotel some clarity. You can ski in around the back of the residence and then 10m you and in the garage. The piste stops 60m short but it is fine. There is no ski out. You take the bus (goes every 5 to 10 mins but not Saturday) or walk 300m to the resort (uphill).

The rooms were well laid out, construction was new, kitchen worked well and supermarkets (small are within walking distance). Swimming pool steam room is small but modern and clean. At 6pm it is busy. Outside of that it was quiet. You can order breakfast baked goods every day. Parking is available underneath for 9 EUR a day. Packages vary - if you book directly it appears you need to clean on exit and order sheets etc. We booked online and all was included in price.

In terms of issues. Yes the beds are more than firm. Sleeping on a rug on the floor firm. In the two room option the double bed is small. It didn't stop us. The other issue was only BBC World for non French speakers. And yes the staff varied between delightful and charmless. We were highly informed after 9 days!

All in all. Fantastic. One star removed for beds.

PS: in a hire car with snow make sure you have chains and ignore Google Map Directions and make sure you follow the main road to the ski station and turn off just before you reach it.

Our family stayed 5 nights as a "last minute" decision to get some skiing in before school returns, and escape the rain! Arriving in reception, you think you've come to the wrong hotel for the price, it is lovely. The size of the apartment is perfect and well equipped. Our family stayed in a 2 bed apartment. Stunning views across the valley towards Villaroger.
The check in, after driving 8 hours across France was "minimal". Here's your keys, a garage remote that didn't work and sign here- an inventory of the apartment, which we were required to sign, but not given a copy of to take up to the apartment. When we returned the garage remote, we were told, "Oh, someone else said that number 11 doesn't work." Thanks!
After settling in, we tried to connect to wifi, but of course we needed a password. Oh, just gone 8.00pm and the reception is locked up!! It would be better if they had a routine check in procedure that included a little more information. We found out on our last day that there is also a door code available to gain entry after hours, which we were not given on check in!!
No transport to the slopes on Saturday, but the driver is excellent, polite and very helpful.
As mentioned in other reviews on trip advisor, the beds are like sleeping on a slab of concrete. I noticed that someone had mentioned this in 2010? Shame we didn't see this before booking! Would have looked elsewhere. Nothing has changed. We rotated beds, the best nights sleep was on the sofa pull out bed! We are accustomed to European "firm" beds, but this is another level! And the pillows are the same. Take your own pillows and a mattress topper if you want any sleep at all.
Also, only one toilet- can be a problem!
You can order baguettes etc from reception, good value and great quality, but we only knew this because of a notice on the reception counter!
Kids loved the pool and sauna, when it was open. Boot room is good, not sure why you have to struggle 2 heavy doors to get in there. We ended up leaving our skis and boots at Inter sport, where we rented skis for the kids. The staff are fantastic at Inter sport, good quality equipment and great prices. They gave our kids sleds to go toboganning, even though we had given them money to rent them. Nice gesture.
If you have small children, I would recommend staying up in the village, as you would have to walk on the road to get down to the hotel, which can be icy.
Such a shame about this hotel, St Foy is a wonderful resort, it suited our family for the range of skiing available, the black off piste to lovely wide blue runs. The service at the resort as a whole is relaxed and very friendly. Was surprised that English is so widely spoken as we wanted to practice our French.
We would not stay at Eco le Ruitor again, the lack of information at check in (door codes and wifi access etc) and the concrete beds just did not impress us. Actually, the lack of sleep would be the main reason to not return here.
However, we are coming back to St Foy at Christmas and bringing some friends.

Having read other reviews, we came prepared: we already had all the essentials with us (tea, coffee & filters, milk, etc). We also knew we'd be using the car, as it is a good walk over to the heart of the station/resort - especially for young children in ski boots.

The apartment was fine for a family of four (we got a 2 bedroom, although I thought that I booked a 1 bedroom). Towels, bed linen, etc was very good. Matresses were firm. Good large balcony with stunning views.

The staff were helpful, if asked (and available). Reception is staffed only from 8am-12 and 4-8pm. They were not forthcoming with advice. (When we could not connect to the wifi, they recommended unplugging the router, but it took a few questions to be told that it was in the cupboard. They didn't bother to tell us at that point that we'd need them to generate a username and password.)

The kids loved the pool.

We booked this very last minute and were pleasantly surprised at how well that turned out. The resort is perfect for beginners, intermediates and adventurous off- piste types.
The apartment was warm, comfortable and nicely furnished. The only drawback was that it was a reasonable distance from the nursery slopes but this is not a problem before 12 midday as a shuttle van will take you up the road in your ski gear anytime you like. You can pretty much ski down to the residence at the end of the day. Plus its an easy walk up to the shops and restaurants if you are not in ski boots! It looks like a new ski lift will soon be located very close to Eco le Ruitor so that will make it even more attractive. We would happily return to this resort and to this residence. If you are booking farther ahead than we did I would request an apartment with the view down the valley which was stunning. Our apartment was a 2 bedroom, I bathroom which looked over a snow field which lies below the nursery slopes - view not so stunning but it was possible to watch the kids playing in the snow from our balcony. I agree with the previous reviews re sauna, pool and hamman - all really good. Staff were very helpful. You can borrow fondue and raclette set, games books, hairdryers and more - very handy! We lived in the Isere valley for a long time and have skied all around the area but never before at St Foy - it is a real gem and so pretty and relaxed. Seems very popular with the French - always a good sign!

Room Tip: Ask for a view over the valley ( on same side as the reception).
