“No sign of 'H' in this Steppes - But the quality and service make up for it!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

This should be the blueprint for a typical English Tearoom -Top quality, great service, value and locally sourced and homemade produce. I can't recommend this place highly enough! My favourite Tearoom (including the Lake District) so far in the UK and I can't see it being beaten anytime soon!

Hi Nudeman! What a lovely review, thank you so very much. We've set out the tearoom just as we would like a tea room to be so I'm really pleased that you enjoyed it and that you'll hopefully be back again soon. Please let us know when you are here and we'll sort you out with a complementary big slice of cake! Thank you again. Gary & the team :)

“An elegant, traditional tea room - fabulous!”
Reviewed September 11, 2012

This is a delightful tea room in a charming location - a mediaeval style timbered building. For history buffs, it's also the village where Owain Glendower used to hold meetings! How nice to find a tea room that serves quality teas and light lunches in a traditional English setting with real china cups and saucers. The staff are lovely, particularly the Northern Irish waiter (and part owner and Baker!). The food was delicious; the selection of teas on offer comprehensive and the ambiance wonderful. All, in all, highly recommended. The cakes and scones are all made on the premises and are divine!

Hi Sarah, thank you very much for the lovely review! I'm really pleased you enjoyed your visit to our old building! She's almost 500 years old and was once the Rectory to the church at the end of the garden. Steppes has been the village shop since 1977 which I think is pretty amazing! I'm so pleased you liked our tearoom and enjoyed your time with us. Hopefully we'll see you again when you are next visiting Pembridge. Best wishes & many thanks, Gary (The northern Irish fella!) & the team! :)

“Very civilised!”
Reviewed August 28, 2012 via mobile

Lunch at Ye Olde Steppes in Pembridge on the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend sat in the back garden area enjoying the sunshine (not seen a lot of that this summer).

Lovely food (ham, cheese and pickle sandwich for me, bacon and mushroom quiche for the good lady and a bit of both for our little lad) and a pot of tea from leaves - all felt very civilised.

As our son enjoyed looking at the chickens and budgies in the garden, we extended the stop with a cherry scone, warm from the oven with jam, butter and cream and a Victoria sponge cake slice.

Only regret is not buying a separate cake for our son, who thought what he had of ours was all scrummy!

All the food fabulous and staff all very polite and friendly.

Hi There, It must seem like a distant memory sitting out in the garden having lunch, now that the weather has gotten so cold. Thank you so much for your review and for coming to visit us at the Steppes. I'm really pleased that the three of you enjoyed your lunch together and that the little one polished off the cake!! Thank you again and hopefully we'll see you back soon! Best wishes, Gary & the gang!

“Amazing cakes!”
Reviewed August 11, 2012

We stayed in the village and visited several times during our stay. All I can say is what amazing cakes, totally spoilt for choice. The blackcurrant cake made with ground almonds was such a seasonal different cake and gluten free to boot! We also had the cider apple cake which has a crumble type topping, made with local cider, the espresso cake had melt in the mouth butter icing and my husband could not get enough of the Bara Brith which he says is the best he has ever tasted and that's saying a lot from a fith generation Welsh farmer!
What a wonderful place, friendly and such different choices other than the usual run of the mill cakes in most tea rooms.
I would like to congratulate you on your staff especially those beautiful twin young ladies we saw on the Saturday and Sunday, so polite and nothing was too much, fantastic product knowledge too, they knew their cakes inside and out! So lovely to see such dedication in ones so young they also had a wealth of knowledge on the local area too, a real credit to you.

I cannot tell you all enough to go and try it out for yourselves, it's like a home from home, with cakes better than your grandmothers!! We will be back, thank you so much.....would love some of your recipes or even a cookery lesson!

Hi Valerie,
Wow- Thank you so much for the lovely review and for enjoying our cakes so much. We really enjoy making the cakes and like to change things around to make sure that there is something new and exciting to try! This week was Courgette and Lime cake which has been really popular and I'm sure you would have enjoyed. We try to have at least two Gluten Free options for people to try, we have a few friends that struggle with Wheat and like for them to be able to enjoy eating cake with us.
We have to agree Valerie that Mark and I are so fortunate to have a wonderful team working with us here at Steppes. The two girls you mention are our fantastic Saturday girls who are madly passionate about what they do and are a real credit to us!
Next time you are in Pembridge then please stop by for a slice of cake and I'd be more than happy to share recipes!! Best wishes and thank you again, Gary.

“Perfect English village tea shop”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

We had a delicious lunch (homemade pea and mint soup and locally baked bread) in this lovely tea shop set in one of the famous Pembridge black-and-white bulidngs. There are quite a few steps up, as the name suggests, leading to a wonderfully old fashioned village shop and tea rooms on the first floor. You can look over the village street or sit in the parlour with a view of the garden and church as you enjoy your tea. We didn't have room for the scrummy looking cakes but with real china, bunting and Vera Lynn in the background, it'd be the perfect place for a proper cream tea on another visit! Friendly, welcoming and quick service. Open on Sunday.

Hi Another! Thank you for your kind review and for stopping for lunch with us at Ye Olde Steppes!! Really pleased you enjoyed the Pea & Mint soup as it's now one of my favourites when the sun is shining! The Tearoom sits in a great spot with a good view of the village and church though the 12 steps can be tricky for older customers! We have side access through the church grounds with only 2 steps and with prior notice we can arrange wheel chair access through our side door. Thank you again for such a kind review and we look forward to welcoming you back to Ye Olde Steppes soon. Best wishes, Gary
