We have a house nearby and have tried every restaurant in the area but come every time we are in France to L'Auberge des Chenets. L'Esperance in Vezeley is the best and most famous in the area but the prices are incredibly high. L'Auberge des Chenets provides an excellent, much more reasonable (but far from cheap) alternative with a very relaxed ambiance.
L'Auberge is on a very busy Route Nationale but is a haven of calm inside. Sligthly fussy decor but very comfortable, with a lovely open fire in the winter. Unlike many Burgundy restaurants, the charming Madame Gillot and the senior waiter make every effort to put their customers at ease. Lots of nice little touches - an amuse bouche to start with and home-made petits fours with coffee. There is a basic menu to at Euros 26, which is very good value. We have had it several times so tried the Euros 39 menu today, with foie gras mi-cuit (which is always outstanding here) and brochettes of lamb for one of us and a fish casserole for the other. Both dishes, particularly the lamb, were delicious. Puddings were extremely good. They have a really excellent, wide-ranging wine list and a very nice house champagne as an aperitif. The overall meal is not cheap but the whole experience, combined with excellent cooking, is really worth it. One of the best things to do in this bit of Burgundy - there are lots of other restaurants where the service can be very poor and the food very dated and second rate but the Auberge des Chenets is really a pleasure. They are even nice to children! Highly recommended.
