“Not for us”
Reviewed October 13, 2010

Well unfortunately the accommodation was disappointing on many levels. Firstly we had no fresh flowers in the room as promised on the website, the room was tiny and looked nothing like we expected. We could only afford one meal as roast beef for two with a desert was $55 each which is very overpriced. We were served breakfast one hour late one morning and given a bar of out of date chocolate as an apology. The staff when we arrived (lady) seemed like she had better things to do and was not very friendly. This trip was for our first wedding anniversary and so very disappointing all round.

It was disappointing to read your review as we pride ourselves in our high levels of customer service. The Coach House is always very popular with our guests and has both a bed area and a sitting area with an extra large bathroom and private courtyard. We did apologised profusely for the late breakfast. a result of a time change for us after a holiday away. We allow our guests to say the time they would like all meals and serve them in a choice of one of our several attractive areas. We are a very small establishment and only ever cater for 2 couples. All dishes are handmade and utilise the best local and where possible organic ingredients. We have enjoyed boundless praise for our dishes from guests and they often return and savour the same menu choices when they re book. Previous guests have commented on how welcome they have been made and we sincerely apologise if you felt you didnt receive sufficient attention.

My husband and I booked the Coach House for 2 nights. We were welcomed by Caroline who showed us to our accommodation, a beautifully decorated cottage surrounded by lovely gardens. The welcoming platter was filled with a variety of cheeses and went very nicely with the complimentary glass of port!

The spa bath in the cottage is really lovely and I had a great time trying out the different aromatherapy products. We spent the weekend lounging around watching dvd's (supplied by the owners), reading books, eating the delicious food prepared by Caroline on the verandah, falling asleep in the hammock and going for walks in the nearby bushland. My husband and I also had a Papyrus massage and that was fabulous!

Fawkes House Country Spa Retreat was exactly what we wanted, a quiet weekend away where we could relax and unwind. We’ll definitely be back.

My husband and I spent four wonderful nights at the end of our two month long visit to Australia at Fawkes House. Having spent a hectic Christmas and New Year in Sydney with family and then another 10 nights with friends in Perth we really wanted some time to unwind and explore a different part of Perth (we’d been in Yanchep). Fawkes House was the perfect place for it, Richard and Carolyn were wonderful hosts and for both of us it was the highlight of the trip. Prior to booking Fawkes House we had intentions of visiting the Margaret River as lots of people had recommended a visit there. I’m so glad we didn’t – there really was no need as there is so much on your doorstep in the Carmel valley. We spend our days visiting interesting vineyards which are completely off the beaten track, strolling around the lovely town of Kalamunda which has lots of quaint craft shops and plenty of stops for coffee. What’s really nice about the Carmel valley is that it’s so under explored and the local people genuinely appreciate your visit. The cottage industries run by the locals are fantastic – we had some very scrummy chocolate and lots of wonderful local produce for breakfast which Carolyn makes a real point of supporting.

We stayed in Fawkes cottage which was perfect for the two of us. The bedroom itself was peaceful and bed extremely comfortable. As we were there during the hottest part of the season it was great to have some air conditioning too. The cottage had a cosy lounge stocked with lots of treats - a great place to unwind after a hard day meandering around the vineyards! The highlight has to be the bathroom though with huge spa bath and wonderful locally sourced aromatherapy products. I didn’t get round to using the spa at Fawkes House but a honeymooning couple who were there at the time said the massage they had was a real treat – maybe next time!

We both left Fawkes House feeling extremely lucky to have found a part of Australia we never knew existed. If you’re planning a trip to Perth the Carmel valley is a must and I’d really recommend a good few days enjoying the pace of life at Fawkes House. I imagine in time it will become a much more popular tourist destination but for now it’s a wonderful retreat for anyone looking to relax, enjoy stunning food and adopt a slower pace for a few days.

This is simply the best way to unwind and detress in a wonderful environment. As you drive into the Carmel valley you feel that you are a world away from the hussle and bussle of city life. The historical Fawkes House is set in beautiful natural gardens, tall timbers and with views over the neighbouring vineyard. It is a real bonus to find that your accomodation has total privacy, making it perfect for a romantic break. The accomodation is set in two building within the gardens. We stayed in the converted Fawkes Cottage. We had our own self-contained lounge in the centre of the cottage and a beautiful bedroom and bathroon which contained a relaxing double spa bath. The other accommodation (the Coach House) is about 50 metres away so you have perfect privacy wherever you choice to stay.
Caroline and Richard who run this bed and breakfast are most obliging and make you feel very comfortable and welcome.
We really liked the options of eating on the wide veranda's of the property, the two dining areas of the house or in the privacy of our own accommodation. The food was truely excellent with a clear focus on home grown and local products, all beautifully presented. Although in this visit we did not have time to sample all facilities of the spa, the options are extensive and the room used is
delightful.
The area has a number of interesting vineyards to visit and Kalamunda is a quaint little town to amble around (although high temperatures reduced our time to spend out in the sun). This in fact turned out to be a good thing because sitting on a cool veranda and relaxing with a beer and a good book allowed us to make full use of the tranquil setting.
If you are looking for a relaxing and romantic break so close to Perth yet a world away from the hussle and bussle of city life then you can't go better than Fawkes House.

I booked this B&B on the 21st of November for a nice relaxing 'de-stress' weekend for my partner and I. Caroline was very accomodating when it came to deciding on meals, offering options from the treatments. We arrived on the Friday afternoon to be welcomed with a platter of local products and complimentary port. We unpacked into the 'Coach House' and started exploring the gardens and area on which Fawkes House is located. A walk down the road soon followed to take in the still calm and beautiful views of valley. We arrived for dinner at the pre-arranged time of 7pm and feasted on fantastic home cooked meals. To return to our accomodation to enjoy a dvd from the collection. Saturday we arose from our house at our leisure to enjoy a wonderful breakfast. This put us in lazy mode so a good book on the verandah's daybed and it was time for lunch. A lunch hamper was arranged at the time of booking and even though the weather didn't turn out the best the food was lovley and the scones with jam and cream a nice way to finish. Then started the treatments!!! Saturday afternoon we were indulged with a 70min Papyrus Massage (deep tissue), but prior to this we spent 40minutes in the Infra-Sauna to warm up the muscles and joints. The massages were fantastic, however mine could have been a bit harder (being a sporting background I am used to being in moderate ain on the table!) however the contact was good and relaxing music played all the while. Upon completion we retired back to our house to ready for dinner at 'Roley's on the Ridge'. (See review on this website) But not before enjoying a nice spa (in our room). After the meal we returned around 11pm to rest under the warm duck down doona. Arose the enxt morning to breakfast and a few hours later a Hot Stones Massage (you have to try it!). We were allowed a late checkout, so departed around 1pm rather than the normal 11am or so. A wonderful relaxing weekend. The service was excellent with Caroling being ever attentive to our needs, but not being invasive. Would thorougly recommend!!! Going to get my parents a gift voucher for there anniversary later this year.
