A guide would be good to use at the site because you need the explanations of the culture to make the site come alive. We did not use a guide.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and lovely. she knew how to take us through and avoid the crowds. the excavated parts were impressive and later enhanced with a visit to the museum where the actual pottery, mosaics and statues are on display. The innovations by this culture, 3600 years ago, such as bathrooms, running water, all kinds of storage for trade and commerce, a canal from the port to transport goods and on and on. Very interesting.

Absolutely astonishing place. Don't expect to spend less than 3 hours there. They are very honest about Arthur Evans's reconstructions and interpretations, but that takes nothing away from the impact of the sophistication of the layout and what went on there. Then tie it in with a visit to the Archeological Museum in Heraklion. So much history - I would rate it alongside Pompeii.

Despite the ethnocentric interference of Evans, the impressive aspects of the Minoan civilization emerge from this impressive site. Worth a trip to understand what influenced the ancient Greeks who came along about 1800 years after the Minoans

Put this on your bucket list if you are coming to Crete in your next holiday! Easy to get to, easy to navigate through and very well documents the Historical period! If you live history, this is a must to go see!
