Serenata is owned and run by a friendly couple from nearby island Santo Antao. It's a short distance off the main road into Calhau, along a track on the left as you approach the village, and is well signposted. The restaurant is very quiet so you normally need go to the restaurant a day or two in advance, so that they can buy the necessary ingredients and open the restaurant.
We went as a group of three, and we were the only people there. When we went to book we were asked what sort of food we wanted, and we chose fresh fish.
We were served some starters of olives, bread, and cheese, then for the main course there was fried mackerel, buttered potatoes and sweet potatoes, cabbage, carrots, savoury rice, lettuce and tomatoes. It was all wonderful. The mackerel had been caught somewhere off the island that day, and the rest had been grown on Santo Antao. For dessert there was local cheese and papaya jam.
We had some reasonable Portuguese red wine to accompany the meal, and some local beers before hand. There was plenty of food, all three of us being very full by the end.
We were charged 4850 CVE, which is about £35.
I look forward to returning, ideally with a slightly bigger group of people, when I am next visiting Sao Vicente.
