“There is not much better in Chiang Mai--”
Review of Charcoa House

Charcoa House
Ranked #1,783 of 2,507 Restaurants in Chiang Mai Province
Cuisines: Contemporary
Description: Since 2004 the Charcoa restaurant owners opened the original Charcoa Bakery. Like the hotel, the partially open-air restaurant and bakery transformed into a charming blend of cultures after the major renovations in 2008. Stone walls, ochre colored stucco, metal grillwork, wall art, soft lighting and a profusion of greenery give the restaurant a Mediterranean ambiance. The dark wood furniture and smiling attentive service feels absolutely old town Chiang Mai. The extensive menu is multicultural too. Diverse choices range from barbecued pork ribs, Greek salad, tuna fettuccine in green curry sauce, Australian meats and assorted traditional Thai meals. The scrumptious smoothies and lassies make a perfect complement to the many baked-daily items like mascarpone blueberry cheesecake, tiramisu, and pannacotta (to name a few)

We are currently on extended stay in Chiang Mai, so we eat at a variety of places and we have returned to Charcoa House again and again and even took friends with us to share this wonderful place we had discovered. The food is amazing! We have been often enough to try several selections from pizza to sandwiches, from Pork Ribs to Duck and it's all Excellent. The atmosphere is lovely, quiet, clean and spacious. And by the way, the desserts are truly "to die for"! I can't say enough good things about Charcoa except you have to try it and you too will return again and again!

I must share that our favorite waiter is "San", a nice young man who goes out of his way to make sure our every need is taken care of.

You just can't go wrong at Charcoa House. It's on a quiet little Soi at the northeast area of the City and is well worth the trip to eat there.

I could not stop eating. Love the food in this place. It's down a little soi (street) so watch out for it or you could miss it. It's part of a small Bed & Breakfast that has great character.

The manager of the restaurant knew the menu very well and you could tell he had a passion for the place. We ordered Massaman Beef, Cheese & Ham Fried Rolls, French Fries, Turkey Spring Rolls and Thai Beef Salad. EVERYTHING was delicious and some of the best french fries I have ever tasted. JING JING...!

The restaurant is small but very traditional in a European Style and ozzes with character. Prices were excellent and will definately be returning to this place. Strong Recommend!

Charcoa, which is a small guest house as well as an all- day restaurant, is located in the heart of the old city, across from the moat and about 1.5 kms from Thapae Gate. But if you assume that it is typical of many eateries in that area, catering for noisy farangs at rip off prices and with unprofessional service, you are in for a very pleasant surprise.

This place is an oasis of civilised eating in a charming Lanna-style country home. It offers some 25 plus seats in three sections, shielded from the soi by lush vegetation. But it is cosy not cramped, with decent sized tables, comfortable chairs and professional service. The menu is extensive in choice but has not made the mistake of so many eating places of offering an artificially wide variety of dishes. As one of my eating companions noted, there is something for everyone, ranging from inexpensive set breakfasts, plus smaller, cheaper options) to fillet pepper steak, with plenty in between.

The service was surprisingly quick on a busy holiday lunchtime but I was warned that the appealing –sounding four cheese risotto would take at least 20 minutes. I decided to wait until an evening visit but was happy to think that it would be prepared properly, not something out of a microwave. The menu is a model of clarity, with attractive photographs and descriptions in Thai and English (I don’t return to places which arrogantly list food in English only). It divides into sensible sections, with plenty of appetisers, including salads and soups, pasta dishes, Thai food, steak and duck, plus their specialty desserts and cakes.

Our meal included a spaghetti with meat balls- described as herby pork and delicious by the two carnivores, a generous Greek salad – one of four offered : Caesar, sirloin steak strips and tropical fruits. Also a club sandwich. Plus a marscapone cheese cake with a fruit coulis and a ‘home made’ vanilla ice cream which to be honest was very bland and certainly not made with vanilla pods.

A highlight of the meal was the drinks., including a ‘sparkling banana’ and a cherry based concoction with lime and soda: very refreshing. There were many more plus some fancy teas, house wine and other drinks. There is also a wine list but that will have to wait until a later visit.
Charcoa is well worth anyone’s time, thanks to its tranquil setting off the busy road and seems popular with Thais, local farangs and casual visitors. Prices are moderate, certainly there are cheaper places around but it has been my experience over many years that quality usually comes at a price. Here you CAN eat very reasonably, but given the casual elegance, the location, the pleasant ambiance and service and plentiful food, it seemed fair to me.

I stayed at the charcoal for 1 night (with breakfast included) when I got to the hotel was late so I decided to have dinner at the restaurant I have to say it was regular...nothing fancy! The service was poor though! The next morning I went for breakfast and it was plain and come in small portion...again the service was poor! What I have heard about the restaurant was good food...and great breakfast...well I'm sure i can find better! :-)
