Four of us spent a week at this rental property. The house was, many years ago, a forge and has been tastefully renovated, using a combination of old and new furniture and modern facilities, but at the same time keeping many of the original features. It has two large double bedrooms with very comfortable beds, and two shower rooms, one with a multi jet shower. There are two other, smaller bedrooms with three quarter beds, one in a separate bedroom, the other leading off one of the doubles.
The location is excellent, just around the corner from the river and the old footbridge, across which is the main part of the town with many small shops, butcher, grocery, bakery/patisserie etc. There are also several bar/cafes and a wonderful English owned fish and chip restaurant, either eat in or takeaway. Fantastic fish and chips. The best bakery is not on this side of the town. Instead, opposite the front of the house is a flight of steps, at the top of these, right turn and a short walk is a wonderful bakers, their patisserie is divine. Two major supermarkets (Intermarche and Lidl) are a short drive).
Confolens is a typical ancient, rural French town with much to explore. Although the house does not have any outside space, just a short walk of 5-7 minutes is a small park area alongside the river, really nice to sit there, relax, fish or feed the ducks (who are very persistent and partial to grapes). A few kilometers drive is a small village, Sainte Germaine de Confolens that has a similar larger park area at the riverside with picnic tables, small snack bar and toilets. In the attached field is a rare, endangered Poitou shaggy donkey who loves to be talked to. This village is very quaint and pretty and has an interesting ruined fort/chateau on the hill to explore, with great views from the top.
Within 45 minutes to an hour's drive are other bigger towns/cities, Futurscope, a theme park based on film is near Poitiers, about an hour's drive. The coast is about two hours away. This is a really lovely area to visit, very quiet, scenic and relaxing but with plenty of interesting things to see and do not too far away. This quirky old house is a lovely place to stay and I can recommend both the house and the area.
Fantastic property set in the old town and surrounded by outstanding countryside . The accommodation has been decorated very tastefully in a boutique style with many of the properties original features in situ and is a credit to the owner, everything you need to make your stay relaxing and chilled .Comfortable beds meant a good nights sleep after our eventful exploring .Close to the magnificent river Vienne I was only sorry I didn't take my fishing tackle ! Fresh bread daily from the local boulangerie only 5 mins walk (fantastic pastries !!)
A short scenic walk over the bridge on the river and you are in the small town and a choice of shops, bars etc are located. The fish and chips from the local chippy are fantastic ! A nice picnic area and pop up bar can be found a few miles drive in St Germaine under the shadow of the impressive castle .I would recommend a trip to Oradour -sur-Glane a walk around these 2nd world war ruins untouched since the horrors that happened there in 1944 are very sobering.
All in all a truly fantastic place and I look forward to returning very soon.
PS The Grimbergen beer is very very nice !
We spent one week at this property, it was fantastic! This house is an absolute gem in a scenic rural location, a little beautiful town. We were welcomed with a glass of wine (or a cold beer) and a full tour of the property. We were pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness, quality and comfort of this house. It's a really lovely house, fully equiped, well decorated and super cosy! The house has so much character and has retained lots of its original features. Thank you for top quality accomodation! We left this property feeling very relaxed. We would definitely recommend this house and would return again without hesitation. Thanks again!

Just returned from a wonderful stay at L'ancienne forge. Centrally located and really did feel as though I was experiencing the real, historical France. A short flight away, extremely easy and convenient from the airport. True escapism in an instant. Encompassing the Bordeaux wine and Cognac regions. Have visited France before but not stayed anywhere so uniquely or individually appealing. The neighbourhood is quaint, pretty and very historic, with medieval timber framed houses leading up to L'ancienne forge adding to its charm. Beautifully decorated, The attention to detail is something else!!! Yet so incredibly spacious. Very close to a nice Fish and chip shop owned by a lovely English couple and adjacent to a nice picnic area and river. Can't praise it enough :-)
