La Vendange Family Friendly Gites
Reviewed June 20, 2012

We didn't really know what to expect when we came here, as it's our first time in a Gite. The setting did not disappoint-beautiful rural countryside, yet easy to find (the Sat Nav took us straight here in just under two hours from Bordeaux airport).
When we arrived our 2 year old son established himself straight away in the enclosed garden, heading straight for the treehouse, which he pretty much didn't leave for the entire week! There is so much here to keep an adventurous toddler amused and therefore allowing us to have the chance to relax. It was lovely for our son to mix with other kids too.
The cottage (Syrah) had everything we needed, and the bed was extremely comfy. When we arrived we had the essentials in the fridge already, as we pre booked the pack. There was even a lovely bottle of local Rose waiting for us!
Don't buy any eggs when you come here, as the chickens keep the Gite in plentiful supply. They also keep the kids amused as they can feed them every day.
I also got a guided tour of Verdhello and Clairette. Both are lovely cottages, I think next time we will stay in Clairette just to use the spa bath and Zen garden!!!
Richard was a fantastic host, really attentive and making sure we had everything we needed. He also hosted a pizza night, so the kids got a chance to make their own pizzas cooked in the Gite's pizza oven which they really enjoyed.
Definitely coming back here again! Thanks Richard!

We have stayed in 2 different gites and this year we will stay in another one. We love the location (but be prepared to drive to beach and larger towns) which is set in acres of countryside with field upon field on sunflowers - stunning in July.
Rustic is the right description - it is not a destination for those wanting 5 identical gites with matching cutlery, decor, toys etc Each gite has its own identity and charm, they have an old farmhouse feel about them, very homely and relaxing. Its old style French living - yes some things could do with being refreshed but its designed for famillies where kids relax and parents do too.
If you want more privacy then Columbard or Clairette are best - for those who need to watch toddlers in the garden - go for the middle gites.
The general ambience is lovely - do your own thing, share BBQs, have the pool to yourself or share it with a crowd....
Our kids are 10, 7 and 5 - they all asked to come back - we happily obliged. We have never been to the same place 3 times - I think that says it all.

We spent 4 weeks in Syrah in June/ July 2010, our third trip to Richard's gites. The whole family (mum, dad and three small girls under 4) had a great time and we've booked to go back in 2011.

As soon as we arrived the girls were running around the enclosed garden, and demanding to play on the trampoline. This set the theme for the next four weeks. We spent much of it outside eating excellent local food and drinking excellent wine as the children played with their friends in other gites during the day, or as we played scrabble with our neighbours once we'd finally got the children to bed. The swimming pool is excellent and almost impossible for anyone under 5 foot to get into unassisted.

There are plenty of day trips within an hour to an hour and a half's drive - the beach at St Palais is one of our favourites, but we also enjoyed la Rochelle, the electric boats at St Savenien and Eurodesyee animal park. However given half decent weather, it is very easy just to while away the hours unwinding in la Vendange and end up going nowhere...

In some ways the gites are incredibly well-appointed in that they have been very much thought out with small children in mind, so they have all the kit that you would want to look after them. Syrah is very spacious (we put the two eldest children in the cool downstairs bedroom and the baby in with us in the enormous upstairs room, leaving the room above the kitchen, for grandparents etc) and the beds are extremely comfortable - rare in my experience of rental properties. It is however rustic and in a very rural location, so not the place to go if you are bothered by combine harvesters driving past late at night or spiders taking up residence in the bathroom.

If you have preschoolers, then it is probably best to stay during term time so that the little ones don't get too intimidated by the slightly older children that arrive in the holidays. Added bonuses of doing this are that it is cheaper and that local beaches, sights etc are a lot less crowded.

We had a fantastic time at La Vendange. Would highly recommend it to families with young children. Would definetly consider returning there again next year. There are some great day trips but we spend most of our time around the gite chilling while the kids had a ball playing in the garden. The pool was lovely and was a perfect temp. eventhough it was mid Sept. Top marks for La Vendange. PS Loved the pottery painting too!!!

we stayed at la vendange at the end of august 2010 for a week we found it with realitive ease! As the owners information was pretty conclusive! the gite we stayed in was syrah it was pretty basic but clean we have 3 children aged 11 years 7 years and 10 months i would say that the gite wasn't suitable for babies the stairs were quite steep and no stair gates were fitted they had stair gates there but not fixed properly i was expecting a proper cot for my 10 month old son but all there was was a travel cot with a blanket underneath the sheet! one thing to be aware of the childrens bedroom was on the other side of the gite from the master bedroom which i wasn't happy about as it meant that our children were quite far away from us at night! our children loved it though they made lots of friends but i would say the toys are pretty worn and need updating if not thrown away all together! the pool was nice but the baby pool was out of action! dont expect a 5 star place cos it's not the gites are pretty much an top of each other and we felt we did'nt have much privacy as a family! we have been to this area many times before and we love it and will be returning but not to la vendange. we prefer somewhere a bit more comfortable and spacious!

La Vendange is promoted as a small complex of five, three bedroom cottages where parents may socialise with other parents, or just relax on their own while the children play together. Although our cottages are clean and comfortable. We don't promote ourselves as catering to the "luxury" market.

We often hold BBQs, scrabble evenings, pottery painting sessions and other communal activities, but attendance is optional.

The cottages all have private outdoor dining areas but surround a communal garden with shared facilities. The separate pool area is also shared with the other families. The owners would therefore comment that La Vendange is not really suitable for families who feel uncomfortable about socialising with the other guests on site.

Our first priority is to provide clean, comfortable accommodation with plenty of outdoor entertainment for the children. If the children are entertained then the parents can relax.

All our cots are travel cots and stairgates are provided for each staircase, as some staircases are quite steep.

We will be replacing a lot of the toys before next season as these do get worn out quite quickly.

Stayed in Clairette this year, the new larger gite with another couple and their small toddler. it worked really well for two families with two bedrooms and a bathroom on each floor. The kitchen diner is large and well equipped as is the lounge. The best bits are that there are front and back gardens with dining furniture, so you can have breakfast overlooking the main lawn and lunch and dinner in the sun in the "Zen garden". The Zen garden is a great feature of this property and is a wonderful dining setting

The place is rustic and yes some of the garden toys and pool area do need a little TLC which Richard the owner is aware of, but the idea of this place is that kids can roam around with a degree of freedom which obviously makes the adults less stressed and everyone has a better time!

The location is as the website states, inland and quite remote, so yes you will need to drive to the beach for a day out and yes you will need to shop smarter as you cannot nip down the road for a loaf, but for us the joy of this location is the solitude. Just walk down th field at the back and watch the sun go down into the horizon over the sunflower fields and listen to the peace and quiet. No traffic noise at all!

Out and about, Cognac is worth a visit for shops and cafes and a great riverside park. St Savinien has the electric boats that run each afternoon in Jul/Aug between 2 and 6pm. kids will love these. St Jean D'Angely is worth a visit as the nearest town of note and markets are superb on Wed and Sat mornings although food is not cheap in general, its still cheaper than eating out. The Toulouse sausages are a must for the BBQ!! Plenty of great wines in the region and the local apple juices are also lovely

Another great holiday here for us and our oldest asked "why can't we live here?" !!! Can't ask for a lot more than that

Yes with nearly 150 young children on site during the course of each Summer, the toys do get worn out quite quickly ! Guest comments are always noted and we'll be getting in some new toys and children's bikes in time for the 2011 season.

What a superb holiday. The Gites themselves are rustic - very authentic. Don't expect 5 star as you can't do that with this sort of place. But very welcoming and comfortable. It even has wireless broadband should you bring your laptop with you. It's old style farm-house - ad does it really well.

There is a central garden written about by some other writers. Its excellent and kids amuse themselves and each other on the swings, sandhouse, playhouse or football goals. There's chickens to feed and maybe collect eggs from. Our 2.5 year old was facinated (as was I!) by lifting a still warm egg just laid. There's also a barn to play in should it rain.

Gibourne itself is in the middle of nowhere - far enough from civilisation in my opinion. There are towns about 10 to 15 mins drive away but don't leave yourself stuck for milk! It really takes you away from the city life though which we really enjoyed. We hired a car for the 2 weeks and it's so easy to get to places on the French roads. It's a good hour drive to La Rochelle from base.

I would completely recommend this to anyone with kids. No hesitsation. Very friendly, very well setup. If you go expecting the Ritz or a fancy hotel you will not get it - but that is the point. You get SO much more here. We've been to several 'kid friendly' places now in Ireland, UK and France and this is the best, hands down.

My recommendation is to book it and go and have one of the nicest, most relaxing, most kid friendly holiday you can think of. Our motto is - if the kids are happy, we'll be happy - and we had a great time.

Well done Richard and Sarah.
