La Garenne family gites
Reviewed November 19, 2012

We have 2 children (5yrs and 2yrs) and we spent a lovely week in La Grange gite at La Garenne in July 2012. We were looking for a holiday in which the children would be happy and safe and also somewhere we could relax so we spent a lot of time researching options. La Garenne seemed like the perfect place and I was very keen (and quite anxious) to see if the holiday would meet our high expectations. I am delighted to say that it certainly met all our expectations!
Communication during research, booking and on arrival with Dorte was very good – always on hand to answer queries and help with any local information we required to make our stay most enjoyable.
On arrival we were slightly early, so spent the time, in the middle of sunflower fields and vineyards, exploring the gardens and stretching our legs from the car journey. Our children were immediately at ease at the setting which put our minds at rest. Our gite was perfect, spacious, clean and comfortable. The local supermarket is 10mins drive and has everything you need.
We took advantage of Dorte’s homemade cooking one evening and had a beautiful meal when the children were safely in bed after another fun-filled day. We also attended the welcome BBQ to meet the other families staying at La Garenne which was a lovely evening and the children enjoyed painting pottery one afternoon in the garden.
There are many places to see around the area but it is equally relaxing to stay at La Garenne while the children play in the garden or splash around in the pool.
All in all a great holiday where Dorte and Richard both made us feel very welcome and most importantly of all for us, we had a relaxing time – something we never thought possible with 2 young children on holiday!
We are definitely hoping to book to go back again next summer, I would highly recommend La Garenne to any family.

We had a wonderful holiday at La Garenne with our 3 children ages 6, 4 and 2. It was a successful holiday in many ways. The garden is enclosed and very safe for the children. It is easy to watch them play with their new friends and use the toys, they were well entertained and we even got a book read!
The swimming pool was great for our age of children. We did various day trips incluing Fouras (nearest beach), Cognac, St Jean D'angely. Other days we just stayed on site to play and swim or cycle on the numerous farm tracks which you can access from the garden.
The bbq's put on by Richard and Dorte are a great way to get to know the other guests and to exchange information on what to see and do.

We stayed in Maison Blanche at La Garenne in the final week of August and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We and our kids (3 and 6) had a really lovely time there; mainly due to the relaxed atmosphere and the way all the children staying were able to bond with each other and play in the gardens and the pool. The friendly welcome from Dorte and Richard was also a big factor in how enjoyable our week was.

I notice there's a rather negative review of Maison Blanche below and just wanted to add my 2ps worth. There is no doubt that this gite is noticeable less plush than the others - it hasn't yet been refurbished to the same standard, but it is cheaper as a result and I think that it is a fair price for what you get. We didn't find that it impacted our holiday at all; the essentials are all there and we had no problem using the En-Suite bathroom or the oven.

The location is a bit rural and isolated, but we found plenty of things to do within an hour's drive or so. Good day trips we found were:
* The aquarium at La Rochelle and then a walk around the old harbour area - seek out Ernest Le Glacier (15 -16rue du Port) for some truly excellent ice cream.
* La Vallee Des Singes, which is a monkey/ape safari park about 50 minutes drive away.
* Paddling/swimming/canoeing in the river at Condac
and there are others as well.

Overall, we had a lovely week and can only reccomend it.

We have young active boys and an 18 mth old girl so we didn't expect to be able to relax very much (if at all!) but we came home feeling energised and all had a wonderful time at La Garenne.

The children had the freedom to safely play outside all day with their new friends and especially loved the swimming pool, rope swings, riding their bikes, wooden play house and large trampoline.

It's a beautiful, rural and tranquil setting which you could happily stay at for the whole duration or if you feel like exploring the local area there's some great things to see and do if you travel a little further a field. Our highlights were the aquarium at La Rochelle, Cognac play area, Ruffec river for kayak trip and Fouras for a day at the beach.

Dorte and Richard are the perfect hosts and we especially enjoyed the weekly BBQ and the delicious home cooked meal delivered to our gite.

After Day 2 we decided we'd come back next year and we've booked to stay in La Belle Maison which is a stunning, spacious 3 bedroom gite with a private garden overlooking the fields.

Can't rate it highly enough and counting down til next year!

We stayed in La Belle Maison Gite. Large three bedroom house, with open plan kitchen diner, plus two shower/bathrooms. Outside is a small pool and play area for children. The house was clean, with all the basic amenities, including access to a washing machine. Our two ten month old twin boys were very happy here, loved the swings outside, and the layout of the house meant we could keep an eye on them. The owners, Dorte and Richard, were very helpful and friendly, and cooked for us on a couple of occasions by arrangement, and also baby sat one night when we went out. We thought this place was excellent value for money, extremely welcoming, and laid back. Exactly what we wanted and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Some of the decor was a bit bumped and scratched, but this suited us, as when our boys had little accidents themselves, there was no problem. The location is also rural (La Rochelle is an hour away). We knew this in advance and it suited us fine, but we appreciate some people might want to be closer to the sea. Very likely we will come back here next year!

Room Tip: Being continental, the floors are tiled, so if you have little ones crawl around a lot bring a rug w...

We spent a great week at La Garenne back in July - the length of time it's taken me to write this, demonstrates how much I appreciate a holiday and therefore how much pressure is on it to be great!
I can't complain - everything has been covered. The gite was lovely and rustic, although geared up for spending most of your time outside - which you do. The concept is the real selling point - shared gardens and pool, and new friends on tap for the children.
The BBQ night was a real ice breaker for all and meeting all the other families and sharing experiences and suggestions, alongside Richard and Dorte's advice, was, for me, the highlight
The amount of people we met who were on their 2nd/3rd visit, is testament to how easy and relaxing a holiday it was - for once, the boys amused themselves, whilst I managed to read not one but two books!
I would definately recommend!

La Garenne is designed perfectly for the children - from the trampoline in the front garden to the lovely pool and not forgetting the other children. It was lovely to be able to open the doors to the Gite and let the kids out to play with their new found friends without having to worry about where they were or what they were doing. If the kids are happy, that's more than half the battle.

La Garenne is situated conveniently for places such as La Rochelle and Cognac, but it is far enough away to be completely rural and for you to not feel pressured into going anywhere if you don't want to. There are lovely walks in the local area around the sunflower fields and vineyards, and a 10 minute drive to the local village for a great Sunday market and lovely boulangeries for croissants and baguettes.

Dorte and Richard were lovely hosts, we had Dorte's cooked meals on a couple of occasions which were very nice.

We all had a great time and came back after two weeks feeling completely relaxed.
