If I were rating this camp solely based on my experience at the accommodation, it would be great. The dinner they serve is delicious, the hospitality is welcoming, the rooms are clean and warm (even in the freezing winter), they offer you shisha (paid of course), the WiFi is good for the desert, and the toilets are clean. So why am I giving it a poor review? The way I was treated was completely unacceptable for a guest! I actually canceled my previous Wadi Rum trip based upon the recommendation of my hostel in Wadi Musa. The tour was promised to be 2-4 hours (longer if there were more people) and I was never told ahead of time where we would go.
When I got to the camp early in the morning, we drove right past the visitor center on the highway to a petrol station where we continued onward to the middle of the desert. This camp is way out of the way from Wadi Rum Village, with no place to get food or other provisions.
When I got to camp, nobody could answer my questions about where we were going or when the tour would leave. In the car, Mahmet had told me that there would be a group of women joining me on the tour, so I was expecting to get a longer tour. I am not sure if he could understand my questions, because he needed Google Translate to answer simple questions. I was completely alone in the camp, with nowhere to go. Nothing was explained to me, so I sat there without any idea. Several hours later, a group comes with me and I am told to join the “jeep” (AKA back of a pickup truck). We proceed to go to the most unremarkable places in Wadi Rum, like a face in a rock, where they filmed the Martian (which is where the camp is!), a place the driver can drink tea and we can buy cheap trinkets, and a place where someone carved Lawrence of Arabia’s face, which looks like a first grader’s art project. The tour was pathetic and we asked to go back after being fed up with it.
This company needs to realize people don’t come all the way to Jordan and Wadi Rum and spend a lot of money to drink tea at a roadside canyon or look at a poorly sculpted face. We want to see places like Jabal Umm ad Dami, Burdah Rock Bridge, Lawrence’s House, Khazali Canyon, Nabatean Temple. Be clear with people about where they are going, because otherwise we would not spend the high fee for this tour!
Immediately after the tour, I called my hostel about the experience. They asked our guide to show us more and the owner proceeded to lie about me agreeing to going to the places we went. How could that possibly be true when he could not even answer my questions when he picked me up? He does not understand english!
I also know they cheated us when I asked the group on the six hour tour about the price they paid...30 dinar! The couple that was on my trip paid 40 dinar each to see “the best parts of Wadi Rum”! Robbery. You are just seen as another dumb tourist with money, which really hurts considering how many other wonderful tours I have been on in Jordan!
The driver told us nothing about the places we visited, probably because he didn’t know english. He also drove recklessly fast down the sand dunes.
My advice: If you want a nice place to stay with Bedouin culture, this is a great choice. If you want a fair tour of Wadi Rum, go elsewhere. My friends paid the exact same price as me and got a full day tour, dinner, and accommodation and exceptional service.
