Came by yacht from Sicily which give you a different impression as this is the first large safe harbour for many many miles. Recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Lovely place, very touristic. The main road is just shops and restaurants but the Castle is mind changer. A concrete strip is connecting the mainland to this very small island where the castle is located. We have been here in the early 90s and the castle was open to everybody, now the local authorities took over and restored the place making it a museum, however there are concerts and other shows just outside the premises which are ruining the view.

if you're not desperate to see this place, don't
it's quite strange, i think there's more recent sand and crete in this place than original stones.
whilst the entry fee is only 1 euro, there's nothing 'WOW' at this place
you can walk around the base on the outside, however, again there's nothing really rivetting about the site

Interesting fortress with some information provided in English.
Partly reconstructed. Accessible inside to those without any mobility problems (there are many stairs to climb).
Lovely views from the tower over the sea and surrounding coastline.
Entrance tickets not expensive.
Beware if you are visiting with kids - when we went, there was some local artwork on display in the main area which was very sexually explicit and inappropriate for general viewing (by the kids).
Around the fortress - good snorkeling and many pedal boats/motor boats for rent. We had a great time on the crystal clear water around there.
The beach next to the fortress is very small and full of stones and rocks. It was also very crowded in August.
The town has some restaurants and souvenir shops. It is bustling at night time. But the fortress is really the only thing worth a visit there.
