“great resort - terrible cuisine”
Reviewed February 21, 2010

we went there at the end of 2010's Spring Festival. Most people were already heading home, therefor we had the slopes for us. The resort is excellent compared to other alternatives in China. It offers quite a number of black and off-piste challenges and and a superior snow preparations.

The hotel - well - it's asset is its location directly at the slopes. That's it.
The rooms we had were equiped with tatami - thin mattresses, that gave us pain during the night and the morning. Each room got free internet and an own PC and TV.

The kitchen is a problem. We already heard from families traveling last year that they got sick after having eaten there. Guess what happened to our entire family ? Same to another family we met during breakfast. The offering as such is ok, they have a Western restaurant that resembles an eating hall with very limited choice. The Chinese place (hot Pot and restaurant) have a decent menu and good service.

If you got a car a good choice is to go 15min down to Chongli, there is a 5 star hotel.

"Wanlong is the ski resort to which the expats in Beijing go" was what we were told by friends living in China. We've lived years now in Hanoi and China was our closest chance to get back on skis but finding a place to go was daunting. On their advice we checked Wanlong's website (with pages in English) and emailed. They were very quick to reply, with extra info we asked about. Their English was sketchy but sufficient.

HOTEL: The resort's hotel (Shuanlong) is the only accommodation option if you're without transpo, as the next closest anything is about 8km down the road. However, it's at the foot of the slopes :-) Good buffet breakfast (included) and great food in the restaurants. Nice rooms (a true 3 or 4-star). Hot plate for boiling, humidifiers, bottled water, computer w/internet, TV in each bedroom, good water pressure in the shower. But no fridge. Downside - in every room on our floor (full of expats) there are only mattresses to sleep on. No beds. No food shops so bring with you snacks, etc.

SLOPES: All slopes were open despite coming 250kms from Beijing and not seeing snow until the last few kms before arriving. Snow machines were everywhere but thankfully the real stuff had fallen already. A good mix of blue, red & black trails. Lifts were in great shape, though a bit slow (bec of beginner locals I supposed). Trails well groomed and are in the sun all day.

PRICES: Are on their website - lift and rentals (all good-condition Salomon late-model stuff) for a day (8-16:30) - 510/570/750 RMB a weekday/weekend/peak season. 2 days 830/880/1170.

COMMUNICATION: It'd be wise to have the number of someone you could call to translate Chinese as the level of English at the resort is minimal.

EXTRA: Good ski instructors; very friendly, honest and helpful staff; rental of ski clothing on-site (kids to adult sizes); helmet rentals 10 RMB/day.

So basically this place is self-contained. 3 restaurants in the hotel, 3 ski shops at the base and a very nice log cabin at the top (2100m). A quite nice shuttle minibus goes to and from the Beijing Workers' Stadium for very reasonable cost.

  • Liked — Good quality and standard
  • Disliked — No beds - only mattresses
