“Perfect, relaxing stay”
Reviewed July 18, 2013

I stayed here for a long weekend in July. First impressions were great- the garden is gorgeous and turned out to be the perfect spot for a refreshing G&T from their bar before taking the 20min stroll to the local pub.

The house is also beautiful. The rooms are bright and airy, with lots of quirky design features. And the bed left me unconscious for the entire night! Perfect.

Breakfast was delicious- lots of fresh fruit, granola, and loads of hot options in addition to the standard full English, all cooked with lots of care and attention.

The hosts were friendly, informative and obviously really wanted to give us the best experience possible.

We booked through Mr and Mrs Smith, and got one night free as a result. If I had been paying full price, there are a handful of things that would have made the stay even better...

Firstly, having just had a 4 hour drive from London, it would have been nice to have a couple of complimentary biscuits offered on arrival. I know this sounds like a really minor point, but it's something that often seems to come as standard in many cheaper B&Bs I have stayed in. Instead, we had to delve into the (fairly expensive) mini bar for a few snacks.

Secondly, it would be good to have bar prices on display. As mentioned above, we had a couple of drinks from their bar. At £5 for a single gin and tonic, this felt a bit steep and it would have been a bit of shock to see the bill on the last day if we'd used their bar regularly.

Finally, dogs! I must confess I am not an animal person at all, and I did know the B&B had dogs and cats when we booked. The cat was there the entire time and I didn't notice it at all. The dogs were only there on the last day, but spent most of the morning running around the garden and jumping all over the furniture, which wasn't particularly relaxing. I'm sure if we'd asked, the owners would have kept them in the house, and it definitely wouldn't stop me from coming back, but something to bear in mind when booking.

All in all however, a fantastic trip, and I will definitely be back.

Highly recommend a stay at The Whitehouse. The owners are very welcoming, the breakfast is yummy (even if you go for the healthy option!) and the rooms are spacious, clean and comfy.
They have beautiful gardens, a relaxing lounge room and a huge DVD collection for you to borrow.
Definitely need a car as you'll want to drive out to local pubs, walks, towns and it's worthwhile exploring the local beaches (some are sand, some aren't). Salcombe is about 15-20mins drive.

We stayed here in November last year and we compare every trip away we have to this one... and find them all wanting!

We stayed in Room Five which was absolutely faultless - the refreshments were just what we needed, there's a great selection of DVDs when you just can't be bothered to go out, the bed was just phenomenal, and the bathroom has to be seen to be believed, just perfect.

The bar and restaurant were also fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed our drinks and meals there, as well as a good few games of chess in front of the real fire with a G&T or two. Their friendly pets are also a nice touch!

There really is nothing bad to say about the place - it's fairly expensive (although we took advantage of an offer through Mr & Mrs Smith) but it's definitely worth it. If we can afford it we'd love to go back when it's warm so we can make the most of what looks like a fantastic summer garden.

The hotel is a converted large country house on the edge of Chillington Village. It is on the main road through the village and although the traffic is fairly continuous it is not noisy and is slow due the very narrow streets. The car park is at the rear of the hotel and about 80m walk to reception; you cannot park elsewhere to unload. The owners of the hotel are very easy going, chatty and welcoming and we were soon given our room key (No5...what a fantastic and huge room!). They are also local to the area and can give advice on walks, restaurants, beaches to visit etc. The hotel is more a visit to someone's expensively furnished home, a fabulous guest house really. The furniture and fittings are an eclectic mix of contemporary art, romantic crystal chandeliers and handcrafted wooden furniture set in a background of muted greys and creams. Our bathroom (en suite to Rm 5) was fabulous and imaginatively finished, my wife said she felt like Julia Roberts relaxing in the massive foam bath from a scene in 'Pretty Woman!' We slept very well in the huge bed and were submerged in the crispy and brilliant white, expensive Italian linen. Our room had a large TV, Sky and a DVD player with a large selection of DVD's available. There is a cool box in the room that is a new twist on the standard mini bar, and had fresh milk for the coffee machine, cold tap and mineral water and a selection of beverages (alcoholic and non). We did not eat in the restaurant for our evening meals however, we did use the owners Beach House Restaurant at Sth. Milton Sands which was great fun! The Cricket Inn at Beesands is a good place for a dinner out too. Breakfast is a selection of homemade granola and fig and apricot compote; delicious! There are also cereals, pastries, artisan jams and preserves and a varied selection of cooked food from the menu card. All is cooked to order and beautifully fresh and tasty. We ate in a 'conservatory area' with other guests, looking out over the large and lush garden. This a fantastic venue for a romantic and relaxing weekend (or longer) escape and a place to which we will surely return; wonderful. It is not the usual hotel experience, far more, a bespoke and tailored guest experience (in corporate speak). The Whitehouse is located close to some of the most beautiful scenery and beaches in the UK with Salcome, Kingsbridge, Beesands, Bantham etc etc.

Service, food , rooms...everything was terrific. The owners were charming and hospitable. Extremely luxurious in Room 5... Could have stayed in bed or lolled in the huge tub all day. Its as personal an experience as being a guest in someone's really luxurious home, which makes me wonder if some of these bad reviews are a result of expecting it to be as well serviced as a 5 star big city hotel and expressing that expectation with big shot arrogance. Attitude rubs everyone the wrong way. Particularly in a bucolic setting like this. Bottles of bath products were running low when i was there too and i had to request a box of tissues but it didnt constitute a rotten experience or deserve a vitriolic review. These short comings were easily eclipsed by Tamara and Mathew who apart from being friendly, entertained us with their their humor and wit.
Ali's cooking, both breakfast in bed and dinner served in our room as well as the dining room, was nothing short of superlative! We stayed at the WHITEHOUSE 5 nights and enjoyed it so much that we returned for another couple of nights at the end of our 4 week vacation. Bottom line..... If , along with all the trappings of luxury found in any 5 star hotel, your priorities are robotic, business like service then I suggest you stick to corporate hotels.

Room Tip: Room 5. ...... Huge bathroom, huge room, huge bed. Facing the lawn so extrememy quiet wit no traffic...

We joined friends for a liesurely breakfast sitting in the lovely garden (we didn't stay overnight). On the positive side, the setting was peaceful and relaxing. Our waiter was extremely friendly and overall the service was very good. Being able to sit with our dog rather than having to leave her in the car was a bonus.
Our table had not been cleaned prior to laying up - was covered in bird droppings. Also the cushions were still damp from overnight dew - why hadn't they been stored inside?
The cold buffet was adequate - but only just! Greater choice would have been nice.
Two of us had the full English which was fine - but needed to be at £10.50. One of us initially ordered a selection of cheeses off the menu only to be told that wasn't available. So she opted for soft boiled eggs instead which were very disappointing clearly having been cooked straight from the fridge.
Coffee was served in tiny cups and was lukewarm. Each of us had seconds which added to the cost. A pot or cafetiere would have been much better - but clearly would have dented their profit!
The total bill for 4 people was over £75 - an astonishing amount for really quite an ordinary meal.
I'm afraid we wouldn't return despite the lovely setting.

We spent our honeymoon here last week and loved the relaxed atmosphere at The Whitehouse. As animal lovers we liked having the cats and dogs to keep us company and the 3 owners were all friendly and helpful making us feel very much at home. We enjoyed the laid back service feeling it gave this hotel a unique chilled out feel which is completely different to the usual hotel chain experience. We stayed in room 4 which has a four poster bed and huge bath and shower. Breakfast was delicious - my husband said the makeral was the best he had ever tasted- and I can highly recommend the pancakes. We also had dinner one night which was reasonably priced and very tasty. Thanks to The Whitehouse for a fantastic short break- we hope to return!
