In a remote area of Pavia sits this most extraordinary remnant of the Sforza/Visconti dynasties. Unlike most monasteries of the Carthusians, the elegance, size and decoration of this building seems so out of place....but it was primarily intended as a monument to the ruling family and its wealth, so it becomes understandable. But it is one of the extraordinary sites (and sights ) in all Italy and should not be missed. You will need to drive there, but the roads are well marked and you cannot miss it. One word of advice: be prepared to be impressed...just as the Sforzas and Visconti wanted you to be!

We visited after such positive reviews and weren't disappointed. Drove from Monza and it was relatively easy to find and parking easy (4 Euro). Didn't have to pay to go in and there seemed to be no tours but we were happy with that . Wear sleeved top, modest length dress/ skirt and if male long trousers .

Certosa di Pavia is architectural gem. Best way to get there is a car. Inside is a tomb of Visconti and Sforza families. Beautiful work of art.

This is a most wonderful monastery - Lombard architecture at its best. The facade is beautifully decorated and very ornate. The interior is gothic with beautiful works of art. This is a site you should not miss if you are in Milano or Pavia and vicinity. Yona S.

Either a short train ride or bus ride from the center of Pavia , La Certosa is a beautiful complex containing the tombs of Il Moro and Beatrice d'Este along with other members of the Visconti/Sforza family. In the church a guided tour is led by one of the brothers once a group gathers at the black gate. Persistence pays off! Times for tours are not pre-set especially during the low season but if you notice the gate in the middle of the church closed, this indicates that a free tour is to begin. Tour gives information about some of the most important tombs and frescoes and shows 2 inner courtyards as well as a monks' cell. Donation expected afterwards. Also a small gift shop/apothecary and museum in the complex
