“Best waterfall on Deep Creek Trails”
Review of Tom Branch Falls

Tom Branch Falls
Reviewed February 2, 2012

Of the three or four waterfalls along Deep Creek Trails, Tom Branch Falls is my favorite. It is a short level walk from the trail head and it flows into the river at a perpendicular angle, which is unique. It is a much bigger waterfall than you would think from looking at pictures.

My husband and I decided to go check out the Deep Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We drove from Gatlinburg through the National Park to Cherokee and then onto Bryson City until we arrived at the park entrance. It probably took us 1 & 1/2 hours to arrive at the parking lot from downtown Gatlinburg. Once we arrived, we parked in the small lot and then started our hike on the trail.

From the parking lot, you just walk straight up the Deep Creek Tail maybe 1,000 feet or so and you will see the waterfall on your right. We literally walked a few minutes up the trail and there it was! The trail is mostly flat and VERY wide. It is a dirt path, but not rocky or at all difficult to manuver. Plus the trail is surrounded by trees, so it was heavily shaded. It was a HOT July day when we were there and it was still pleasant on the trail. There is a bench directly in front of the waterfall area. So you can have a seat, relax and watch the water cascade down the rocks and into the creek. It really is beautiful and requires almost no effort to hike to this waterfall. You will most likely see kids playing in the creek here & even tubing past the waterfall. If you hike a little further up the trail you will come to a wooden foot bridge where you can watch the people tubing the creek. Continue on up the trail and about a mile and you will reach the Indian Creek Trail (waterfall).

Overall, we had a great experience hiking to Tom Branch Falls. It has to be one of the easiest waterfalls to "hike" to. It literally seems like it is just feet from the parking lot. The trail is extremely wide and flat from the parking lot to the falls. It is definately rewarding for the little effort required to hike to it. People of all ages should be able to enjoy this trail. You might even want to bring a tube or rent one from one of the MANY tubing places (for as little as $3) and try a hand at tubing while you are there!
