This whole area is sure worth the curves to get there. Beautiful scenes and so many areas to hike bike an just walk. Perfect for a picnic or a 20 mile hike. The camera sure will get some use in this area, and then, if you feel daring, try the Tail of the Dragon with the 318 curves in 11 miles. The dam itself is quite a feat of engineering, and the visitors center is so helpful!

... Would Take Me Anywhere; so let them take you to Fontana Dam. Free attractions are always better but this one takes it up a knotch. Break out the cameras and make sure you syop off and grab, or first prepare, a picnic so you can enjoy some off the road time at an awesome facility. If you are visiting the Maggie Valley, Cherokee, Bryson City area make sure you plan on a couple hours at Fontana Dam.

I had heard about Fontana Dam, and even seen pictures, but it is a place that must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. This marvel of modern engineering in such a beautiful setting is breathtaking. The visitors center is small, but very well done. It gives you all the information you need to truly appreciate the dam itself. The visitors center workers are retired TVA employees, and they really made the trip worthwhile. They were engaging and very helpful. What a great adventure!

There was enough to do for about an hour. The dam is very high up and if you are scared of heights you may get a bit queasy. There was a small info center and gift shop. We happened to come on a day that the river was 4-5 feet above normal so it was a spectacular view of the extra channels being opened. The kids enjoyed it as well.
