Description: Simplicity, imagination and quality of produce are key at The Royal. Head chef Francois du Toit (La Colombe, Manna Epicure) believes that food should be honest. If you say tomato it must taste like tomato, if you say fillet you should get the best our country has to offer. This philosophy together with the use of modern equipment (such as the use of Sous-Vide and Pacojet) results in creative but unpretentious dishes with "taste" as main ingredient.

“sublime experience”
Reviewed July 14, 2014

We have just returned from a sublime winter's day lunch at the Royal Restaurant in Riebeek Kasteel in the heart of the Swartland. We were welcomed by the most generous of hosts, Maxwell Kriel who have been associated with the Royal Hotel and the Royal Restaurant for the last 10 years. The new owners of the last 11 years, Robert and wife Carmieda, have transformed this venue into the most beautiful and serene spaces in the Swartland. Chef Francois du Toit prepared one of his favourite dishes - a lovely chicken fillet wrapped in bacon and filled with peppadew and fetta served with a lovely mustard mash and lemony vegetables. Maxwell recommended the 2013 Kloofstreet Chennin Blanc to accompany this dish. What an experience!!! We enjoyed our visit so much that we decided to top it off with the Banana tart with peanut butter flavoured ice cream and berry compote. Heavenly!! We have also booked our table for five for the 2014 Christmas Lunch!! If ever you need to break away from the every day rush - treat yourself to beautiful surroundings, fantastic service and sublime food at the Royal Restaurant in Riebeek Kasteel.

“Saturday lunch at the Royal”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

We've just returned from a very enjoyable light lunch at the Royal Hotel - on an absolutely sublime winter's day in the Western Cape! The bar menu provided just what we needed, with the prawns a real hit. Simple but really good value for money. The staff were quietly helpful and pleasant. Will definitely return soon!

“Relaxed Sunday lunch”
Reviewed June 26, 2014

Just to be in the beautiful village was a treat already, but having lunch in the cool old building on a hot summer's day, surrounded by old world charm, made my day. The service was top notch, the food beautifully presented, with pride, and our complaint about the dessert handled excellently!
I think this is a place suitable for every season!
