Description: Simplicity, imagination and quality of produce are key at The Royal. Head chef Francois du Toit (La Colombe, Manna Epicure) believes that food should be honest. If you say tomato it must taste like tomato, if you say fillet you should get the best our country has to offer. This philosophy together with the use of modern equipment (such as the use of Sous-Vide and Pacojet) results in creative but unpretentious dishes with "taste" as main ingredient.

What a nice surprise - the place oozes with old world charm! Great setting, friendly service and great food makes this one a winner - all at a very affordable price! Our first choice of restaurant in Riebeek Kasteel!

The Royal Hotel introduced a winter special which is an absolute must and a winner on a cold winters evening (or a warm one for that matter). A five course meal which can compare with the best i have eaten anywhere. Started with a Caesar Salad, followed by a Butternut and Citrus soup. Mains consisted of a perfect portion of Kingklip on a bed of mash with blanched seasonal veggies and then a delicious Thai chicken wrap. After 4 courses we were done and had to ask for doggy bags for the Malva pudding. and all this for R98 - fantastic value for money and well worth a trip to Riebeek Kasteel.

On a holiday to South Africa decided to see where my family roots are, being a SMUTS.With history and Jan Smuts in my mind we set off to experience the Riebeek -valley .What a wonderful quaint little hamlet we discovered .Being in the middle of the week and not many tourists around we decided to have lunch at the Royal hotel .What a wonderful experience .

We just had a 5 course tasting menu in this beautiful place for R98 per person. Yes, R98. This is not a spelling error! Is it as good as the tasting menu of La Colombe, Le Quartier or the Greenhouse? No, it is not. Was it better than anything I have eaten under R100? Absolutely! The waiter told us that the hotel is more than 150 years old. I guess they didn't change their prices since then. We were taken by friends and actually I expected Afval, Boerewors and Bobotie in this part of the world. How wrong I was and what a beautiful setting. Good selection of wines. We added a new favourite to our list. Absolute must: pre-dinner drink: G&T of Hendrick's Gin, Fever Tree Tonic Water and cucumber.

The Royal in Riebeek meets every expectation. Situated in the beautiful Riebeek valley, you have at breakfast the views over the mountains, but at night there is something special to it too. Crooner music welcomes you when you enter the building and the wonderful open bar and restaurant with the glass wine cellar. Drinks (try the special pink gin & tonic) before your supper at the well managed bar. Then there is the menu: difficult to choose, from a platter to a three course diner. And all looking and tasting brilliant. Prepared with care, served with a smile.
Good variety in the menu, excellent wines... How else could that be in the Swartland area with neighboring and award winning winemakers as Mulineux and the Sadie family.
After this wonderful diner, there came the breakfast. Apart from the 'starters' there is a very interesting menu to choose from. Linger longer with another cup of great coffee in the sunny garden. The Royal... must be met by royals...
