Description: Simplicity, imagination and quality of produce are key at The Royal. Head chef Francois du Toit (La Colombe, Manna Epicure) believes that food should be honest. If you say tomato it must taste like tomato, if you say fillet you should get the best our country has to offer. This philosophy together with the use of modern equipment (such as the use of Sous-Vide and Pacojet) results in creative but unpretentious dishes with "taste" as main ingredient.

“What a surprise”
Reviewed April 24, 2013 via mobile

We just had a 5 course tasting menu in this beautiful place for R98 per person. Yes, R98. This is not a spelling error! Is it as good as the tasting menu of La Colombe, Le Quartier or the Greenhouse? No, it is not. Was it better than anything I have eaten under R100? Absolutely! The waiter told us that the hotel is more than 150 years old. I guess they didn't change their prices since then. We were taken by friends and actually I expected Afval, Boerewors and Bobotie in this part of the world. How wrong I was and what a beautiful setting. Good selection of wines. We added a new favourite to our list. Absolute must: pre-dinner drink: G&T of Hendrick's Gin, Fever Tree Tonic Water and cucumber.

“Gourmet experience”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

The Royal in Riebeek meets every expectation. Situated in the beautiful Riebeek valley, you have at breakfast the views over the mountains, but at night there is something special to it too. Crooner music welcomes you when you enter the building and the wonderful open bar and restaurant with the glass wine cellar. Drinks (try the special pink gin & tonic) before your supper at the well managed bar. Then there is the menu: difficult to choose, from a platter to a three course diner. And all looking and tasting brilliant. Prepared with care, served with a smile.
Good variety in the menu, excellent wines... How else could that be in the Swartland area with neighboring and award winning winemakers as Mulineux and the Sadie family.
After this wonderful diner, there came the breakfast. Apart from the 'starters' there is a very interesting menu to choose from. Linger longer with another cup of great coffee in the sunny garden. The Royal... must be met by royals...

“Superb breakfast in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

We are residents of the town of Riebeek Kasteel and somehow seldom considered The Royal Hotel for breakfast. On one beautiful November morning we decided to try them and we were more than pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the beautiful gardens with stunning views of the Kasteelberg. Well worth a visit - we will be back!

“Top marks!”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

Having escaped the hotel we were staying at, we made for the Royal Hotel for dinner - what a wonderful place, if only we had stayed there. An old Victorian Hotel, it is beautifully maintained and dinner was an absolute pleasure. It was a cold and wet evening and we settled into the dining room off the bar, by the lit fire, gorgeous and cosy. The starter was delicious - marinated springbok with avocado mousse and salad - created by the chef and out of this world. We then had the best steak and triple-fried chips with bearnaise sauce I've had in a long time - beware, the portions are huge! This restaurant is seriously under-rated
