This is a peaceful getaway from the big city (Cape Town) The bar has Boer War (1899/1902 relics/correspondence) The surroundings are full of quaint places and some very good wine farms for Olives & Tasting.

Thanks Robert Francois and the friendly helpful and efficient staff of the ROYAL for making our wonderful special day super special! We had the stunning hotel to ourselves from Friday till Sunday. Francois and his team were just amazing - from the ceremony in the 150 year old couch house - pre reception drinks on the veranda to the wedding reception dinner and dance (excellent delicious food) - everything was just perfect! well done ROYAL HOTEL MANAGEMENT AND STAFF - you have indeed walked the extra mile! Pure bliss

Dear Louise and Willie,

Thank you for your great review. And thank you for allowing to us to be part of that most special day. Rumour has it that none of the weddings held at The Royal for the past 151 years has ever resulted in a divorce. Must be a record. We all wish you all the happiness in the world.

Kind regards,

Colonial lifestyle at its best. Beautiful room with a beautiful view, underfloor heating and aircon. We loved every minute of the relaxed atmosphere. Food was excellent, from the afternoon tea and cake up to the breakfast the next morning. Lamb shanks for dinner were served by very friendly staff. All and all a great stay. (One very small tip - ladies do take your own hairdryer with ;-) )

Dear Nicolette,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. I am sorry for the lack of communication from our side regarding the hair dryers. We don't have them standard in the rooms but we have them available at reception. My apologies for that.

I hope to welcome you back at in our beautiful valley soon.

Kind regards,

My husband and I escaped to Riebeek Kasteel for a couple of days and stayed at the Royal hotel. What a treat!
We loved the African colonial decor and the relaxed atmosphere of this hotel. Riebeek Kasteel as a village is a true treasure and not that far a drive from Cape Town. The Royal is small & inimate boutique style hotel and great if you just want to get away from the world. Staff were super friendly but not overbearing. Food was fabulous. Our bar man was very obliging when we asked for Litchi martinis - they didn't know them but my husband explained what went into them & he came up trumps!
The only slight criticism I would have, was our room - even though it was spacious, comfortable and lovely it was a little tired & could do with a paint and up-date. Pool was great.
Will definitely be back!

Dear Tayocat,

Thank you for wonderful feedback. I have also taken notice of your point regarding the room. I don't know in which room you stayed but all rooms are painted at least once a year. Being the oldest hotel in the Western Cape means a team of 3 maintenance staff members is constantly busy making sure the rooms are always up to standard. This can be a challenge sometimes for the old lady. Our rooms are contemporary with the facilities one may expect in 2013 but the lady's bones are almost two centuries old and need a lot of TLC. But her skin is always fresh.

We hope to welcoming you back soon.

Kind regards,

Robert Brendel

We had a week-end stay over a very busy time, i.e. the olive festival. The room, service and food was very good. We really liked the fact that that non-guests were only allowed in the hotel for a booked lunch and dinner. This kept the hotel peaceful and an absolute pleasure to be at while the the small town itself and street right in front of the hotel were filled to the brim!

Room Tip: There are 5 rooms inside and 5 outside. We loved the outside room with own patio. Very private.

Dear Tania,

Thank you for your review. We are happy you enjoyed your stay with us during the Olive Festival. It is always a challenge to keep everybody happy with so many people visiting our town on that weekend (25.000 this festival). Our aim will always be "quality over quantity". We hope to welcome you back in the future.

Passing this little town we decided to sleep over. We had a room inside the hotel with a 4 poster double bed, with white linen. The rooms are not very big but is comfortable equipped with a fridge and TV. The bathroom was spacious with a bath and a shower. We realised there was no kettle or coffee in the room. When we inquired they informed us coffee/tea is complimentary and made freshly every time you order. What a nice treat, every time you feel like having coffee you pick up the phone and order and nice hot filter coffee gets delivered to your room. The evening we booked dinner in the dining area of the Hotel. We were seated at a table with white linen. When we order the wine it was out of stock due to all the holidays, but the waiter made an effort to get us that specific wine from there store room. We had the most tasteful dinner. We both had the lamb tjops. It was tender and very, very nice. A must have if you ever visiting. Because of the size of the portions we did not have pudding. The next morning when we woke up it was raining and cold, but when we entered the breakfast area and lounge there was a nice cosy fire burning. The breakfast was lovely. You help yourself with fruit, yogurt, muesli and order a warm breakfast. My wife had salmon with eggs and I had the traditional breakfast. It was huge and very nice and tasteful. We enjoyed our one night stay and will defiantly be back. We can recommend this Hotel for a good nights sleep, fantastic dinner and breakfast.

Dear guest,

Great to have a review on our hotel page from someone that just lives around the corner in beautiful Melkbosstrand. Sometimes people have the perception that The Royal is more a hotel for foreigners so great feed-back from locals is much appreciated. For more than 150 years the hotel has been catering for both national (65%) as international (35%) travellers. Our wine list has more than 120 different wines and it sometimes happens that some are out of stock. Normally because the wine house itself is out of stock. That's the downside of having the nicer wines. They just go fast. We hope to welcome you again in the future.

Kind regards,
Robert Brendel
