Location under UNESCO world heritage list protection. It is visible from 5-8 kilometers and looks beautiful from Spišský Podhradie. However in the winter, since November is closed for sightseeing. Worth to come back there in summer. From mountain where is castle is also beautiful view on the mountains around.

The sheer size of these ruins makes the castle worth visiting. Lovely views from the top. The audio guide is included in the price and the English version was certainly very informative and entertaining. Some of the castle is being renovated (October 2019), but that didn’t spoil our visit. Nice little café, too. Worth combining with a trip to Levoča a few kilometres away – a charming little UNESCO-protected town.

After our cable car ride up to Lomnicky Stit, our tour group of 22 stopped to view the castle. Unfortunately, we did not visit, it was simply a photo stop.

The forbidding ruins are without a doubt the dominant historical feature of the Spis region. Covering an area of more than four hectares, and regarded by many as the national symbol of Slovakia, Spis Castle represents one of the largest castle ruin complexes in Central Europe.

Our tour leader told us that the oldest parts of the the castle date from the 11th-12th centuries. It burned down in 11789, but is gradually being restored.

Impressive from a distance, it is worth a stop for photos.

Made visit in early autumn during sunny day. Very nice half day visit, with stunning views of Spis region all the way to Tatra mountains. It is self guided tour, possible to buy audio guide. Terrain is quite steep so bring good sport shoes. Definitely recommend a visit.
