We stayed 5 nights on the personal recommendation of a friend and had no regrets. I would urge anyone to disregard the couple of negative reviews on this site (unless big fluffy towels really are important to you). If you want 5 star luxury and can't survive without checking your e-mails daily then this is not for you. What you will be missing is a traditional French family run hotel in tranquil surroundings offering outstanding food and service. Rooms are on the small side and basic but clean and comfortable and ours had a newly installed shower. The restaurant has a fixed price menu which varies daily and proved consistently good. We ate there every evening (not something we normally do) and the service was well paced taking around 2 hours for 4 courses even when the restaurant was full over a long French holiday weekend. There is an excellent wine list featuring many local wines. Breakfast is standard French (it is in France so what else do you expect) but the jug of coffee provided me with a more than adequate 3 cups and served under plane trees on the delightful terrace, there was really nothing to complain about. The owner is charming, very visible and makes a point of having a few words with guests every day. The rest of his staff follow his example and make you feel welcome. The hotel is peaceful and relaxing and set among vineyards and good walking country. The number of returning guests is testament to what this place has to offer and we will be among them.

Me and my wife and our two children stayed at this marvellous hotel very friendly staff and the owner was very keen on making us feel at home. The food was a real treat the best we had during our travel in France. We will come back to this hotel next year we have already booked for 2008.
Öjvind from sweden, a long way to drive but it is worth it.

We have just returned from a touring holiday in the south of France, and stayed at the Montmirail for two nights. The owner, Monsieur Nicolet, was, to the contrary, one of the most congenial hosts you could hope to meet. He greeted all his guests like old friends and it was obvious that most of the guests were return visitors. We were greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne and imediately made to feel at home. The cuisine was excellent and the situation, in the middle of the southern cotes du rhone vineyards, was beautiful. The rooms were of the usual standard of 3* french hotels, and there was certainly nothing to complain about. We shall certainly return for a longer stay next year, and would recommend anyone to do the same.

Would not recommend to stay there specially knowing what other hotels in the region can offer. The rooms are very basic and the boss of the hotel very unfriendly. The meals are average and the service extremely slow. I would recommend to stay in Les florets (much better value)

My wife and I have been staying at the Hotel Montmirail for the last 25 years. We first encountered the hospitality when the present owners Father and Mother ran the establishment and have watched it improve year on year. If you expecy fawning service constant attention don't stay here if on the other hand you enjoy frendly service with conversation and a sense of fun then you will enjoy the Montmirail. The ability to speak French enhances the experience as not all staff speak English but all the staff over the years, and there are some who have been with the hotel since we first stayed there, know how to provide an unostentatious service always with a smile. Admittedly there are times when dinner can be a drawn out affair but what else have you got to do but enjoy the surroundings and sip slowly at your glass of wine. This is a small 'French' hotel with a 'French' ambiance and a 'French' way of doing things if you enjoy the 'French' way of life then stay here. Many of the guests who come from all over Europe are returning for another visit some have an attendance record longer than ours and this is must be the greatest reccomendation a hotel can achieve. We are returning this year and are looking forward to another stay in the calm of Provence.
