“Feel at home in this haven of tranquility”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2012

Vaucluse in Provence, probably the nicest region to spend your holidays in France. The Southern Cote du Rhone wines (Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Sablet,...) are still excellent value for money. Well hidden in the Dentelles you will be made at home by Marc Nicolet and his staff in Hotel Montmirail, a former factory of limonades purgatives. The setting is very tranquille although all the major things to see are never far away (30 min. to Avignon, Vaison la Romaine or the Luberon). Be sure to order the demi-pension package (breakfast and 4 course dinner included) since the restaurant is simply singing pure Provence. The chef merits a much better recommendation in the Michelin guide ! On chilly evenings the terrace is heated so you can continue to enjoy the sound of the cri-cri's. The hotel is like a club of people returning every year, some for more than 25 years. This year was our 12th time and it will not be our last, can't wait for spring to arrive.

Room Tip: For absolute tranquility ask for a room facing the back because the staff tend to start early in the...

Nice located hotel with simple rooms, nice swimmingpool and kitchen. We advice you to enjoy the dinner, there are not that many opportunities to have it at another place, but the quality is 7-8 out of 10, wit a good price/ quality

Planning a trip to wine taste in the South of France, we booked this hotel on the recommendation of a friend who worked there while finishing his sommelier training. Although I am admittedly a "hotel snob" preferring the amenities and comforts that the higher end hotels typically offer, the quaint and charm of this simple country hotel are intoxicating. It's a wonderful owner operated hotel secluded among the rolling vineyards outside of Vacqueyras, France. The owner, Marc, is a friendly and conscientious operator intent on ensuring that each of his guests has a pleasant stay. There is no air conditioning but, between a fan in the room and the comfortable night time temperatures there, we were never hot. The bed was on the firm side but overall a very comfortable room. The food and, as you would expect, the wine at the hotel are 5 star. It was evident that many couples return there year after year and rarely leave the property choosing instead to relax by the pool during the day and enjoy dinner on the terrace during the pleasant summer nights. However, the hotel is also well situated as a hideaway from which to travel throughout the Southern Rhone Valley (Gigondas, Orange, Chateauneuf du Pape, Avignon, etc...) easily.

We took our brother and sister in law this time....having been twice before on our own....and they now love it just as much as we do! We had the better rooms for the first time and it was well worth it. The food was wonderful as was the service. It is a very peaceful place so if you want a real rest then it is highly recommended.

Room Tip: If the more expensive rooms are available then go for one. They are roomier and overlook the beautif...

We have stayed at this hotel 3 times over the last 5 years. Every time it has got better and better-we come to this hotel primarily due to the extremely high quality of food and service. The food is stunning. The rooms are fairly basic but very clean and well looked after. On our earlier visits the breakfast was fairly basic but now this has improved. The staff are wonderful and have all been there a long time. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. It sums up all that is great about Provence

Room Tip: 104 is a large spacious room overlooking the courtyard

We had stayed here a few years ago and wondered if our memory of the place would be spoilt. How reassuring to find that it’s still lovely. Our room was on the second floor at the pool end and was rather a trek to get there but the ‘patron’ himself kindly helped us with our bags. The room and en-suite were pleasant, made better by having a bedroom window facing the side as well as the front. As when we were there before, dinner on the terrace was delightful and beautifully served. We had the €38 menu. My filet de boeuf de Bavière (Simmenthal) was perfect, as were the other courses. All the wines were very local, the one I had came from the adjacent vineyard. There were few inexpensive wines and I didn’t see any available by the 50cl jug. Breakfast on the terrace was quite good but no more than that.

If you have a larger room and like a better menu with plenty of wine with your meal, then the costs will add up quite quickly! But apart from that, staying at the 3-star Hotel Montmirail is thoroughly enjoyable and we will go there again sometime.

Incidently although the address is in Gigondas (an essential visit for wine lovers), it’s probably easier to go to Vacqueryas and look for the signs to the hotel that lead you up the hill out of the village through vineyards.
