Gianferrante is a great base for exploring Catania and the Etna. It could be described as a small-scale resort or a very comfortable agriturismo. When we were there, the other guests were couples and families with small children, many Dutch. The grounds have enough to offer to spend days without going anywhere. We swam in the pool and played some tennis.
We stayed in two different rooms in the largest building containing 8 rooms in all. They were spacious and the beds were very good. The floors were not very clean though. One of the rooms had a very nice view on the mountains (see pictures).
The food was very good. Breakfast offered not just the typical Italian sweet stuff but also bread, cheese and meat. The only disappointment was that we couldn't get a cappuccino at breakfast.
Dinner was really, really good. They offer a menu with two alternatives for appetizer, primi and secondi, and everything tasted great. We always try to pick our restaurants carefully (using TCI and Slow Food guides for Italy), and cooking at Gianferrante was among the best we had on this trip to Sicily.
