Enjoyed a one night stay at the Bull recently and found it to be excellent all round. The landlady took over in October 2012 so any reviews prior to this date aren't really valid. Our room, no 1, was spacious and spotlessly clean....I noticed a previous reviewer has commented on it being a bit tired. I think the best description of the furniture would be 'honeyed pine', so it's not that fashionable at the moment, but it was all in excellent condition. The carpets, curtains, linens etc are all new and fresh and the room is tastefully decorated. The ensuite had a shower over a bath, this was also spotless, with a generous supply of towels and toiletries.

We arrived late afternoon to a warm and friendly welcome. We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the beautiful beer garden next to the River Ure. It was busy with food service from 6pm on, with families and couples. We had a main course each ... Very reasonably priced and generous portions. Service was quick, friendly and efficient despite it being very busy.

After a great nights sleep, we had a lovely breakfast. Help yourself to cereals, fruit, yogurt and toast, and the full English cooked to order. Very tasty, locally sourced produce used.

The Bull is a well placed for many attractions in the area. I would definitely return.

The food in this olde worlde pub is fantastic and they have the nicest beer garden I have been in. It goes right down to the river. We did not stay there but we were shown the rooms and they are really nice, very clean and comfortable. The staff were nice.

My partner and I stayed in the summer when it was Tanfield Beer Festival. It was quite an unusual experience because the beer festival was really just some offers in the pub but nevertheless, my partner and I had a fantastic evening. We mixed with the locals who were interesting people and the landlady was very accommodating and joined in the fun. The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable. The place has a warm, village-like feel to it and if you have an open mind and a friendly nature, you can really feel welcomed and at home. I loved staying here and meeting the locals.

Four of us stopped off on a sunny Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and drink. Upon arrival at the bar the phone was ringing with the bar lady shrieking 'who bloody rings on a Sunday' - ordered our drinks and food and sat out in the beer garden. Food arrived (waitress put all the meals in the wrong places and didn't say a word) Food was terrible - very dry and overcooked. At no point did any member of staff come out to check on us. Plates were cleared - waitress still didn't utter a word! We went back into the bar to pay and were met with another lady behind the bar who demanded 'who's next'. Paid the bill and left in utter disgust at the quality of the food and attitude of the staff. Definitely wont be back! Shame as the pub is in a beautiful setting by the river.

Stayed for 2 nights with hubby and we must say that we thoroughly enjoyed it.
The food was great value for money and very tasty, the staff were friendly and very helpful on places to visit
We spent each evening in the bar with the locals and were made very welcome ,we thought the tea room down the road was a must for any visitor
Only 3 downsides: the room (1)was over priced as it was very worn and was in need of modernising although sheets were clean
Breakfast was pricey if you were thinking of using it as a stop off
We did get overcharged £14 ,so check your bill ,this was soon rectified with no grievances from both sides
We would most defiantly come here again but maybe stay elsewhere if the rooms weren't upto date or price dropped

Room Tip: We stopped in the four poster room, excellent view

We called here on our tandem on a glorious Saturday afternoon . Please read on - I'm not joking ! The Bull benefits from a fabulous location with a delightful sloping beer garden down to the River Ure in West Tanfield. The Theakstons was fine and there's a kiosk selling Brymor's superb ice cream. We were warmly greeted on arrival by a lady who helped us find a place for our tandem . On further conversation it transpired she was the landlady of about 7 months . And that she also runs the company providing the food in Veritas in Leeds. We didn't eat at the Bull but have eaten at Veritas on a number of occasions and it is very good. I have no doubt that the food will be as good here and that in the coming months the Bull will go from strength to strength . Check it out - it's a little gem !
