“A Trip of a Lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2010

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Le Fontanelle during our honeymoon. We booked the hotel online, only having information from the website and we could not have been more pleased. The hotel is located just outside Siena in the beautiful rolling hills of Chianti. The view from our bedroom window was breathtaking. The rooms and the hotel grounds were immaculate. The staff was extremely polite and helpful. The restaurant in the hotel served some of the best food we have ever eaten, and breakfast in the morning was delightful. The hotel provided free shuttle to nearby Siena for sightseeing and shopping, which is a great option for those who choose not to rent a car. This hotel made every effort the ensure that our stay was perfect, and it absolutely was the perfect trip. We don't usually splurge this much for a trip, but it was worth every dime and we highly recommend it to everyone. We plan to return as soon as possible

Le Fontanelle far exceeded our expectations on our recent visit to Tuscany. The grounds, buildings, room, and surroundings were far more beautiful than any internet pictures we saw before our trip, and we weren't even there in the best season of the year. The location, while tricky to find at first because our rental car company didn't have a GPS for us, quickly became familiar and was extremely convenient for day trips around the Tuscan countryside and for visiting the many interesting towns, both north and south of Siena, plus it avoided the sometimes confusing roads of Siena itself. The food was delicious and imaginative at dinner, and a complimentary breakfast buffet fulfilled any preference. And, the staff was courteous, kind, helpful, and friendly. We felt truly welcomed by everyone. We would strongly recommend Le Fontanelle to anyone seeking a perfect Tuscany vacation. It was one of our best experiences anywhere. The closest US comparison would be Blackberry Farm in Walland, TN.

All staff were very kindly with us and our baby son with 9 months old. Great view but better on summer time when breakfast is served outside. Restaurant is a little bit expensive. Very close to Siena, just 15 minutes. Would stay again!

We can only give the the Fontanelle five stars? It deserves more. Perched high up on the sides of a valley in Tuscany, this restored gathering of buildings pampers a small number of lucky guests. Let’s get the superlatives out of the way – the views are so perfect you’d swear it was a painting of what the Northern Italian countryside is supposed to look like. The restoration is so modernly rustic that it is not until you pay attention that you see that every a brick, every tile, every bush and tree are lovingly built and maintained. The staff pampers you in a personal, “welcome to our family” style rather than the showy, over-the-top treatment of a huge resort.

The dining room deserves the same five stars as the entire property – the food is varied, of the region, and amazingly selected, prepared and served by people who are your friends from the first night. And the wine list – just what you would expect in the middle of one of the premier wine regions on the planet. Although the two of us are not big drinkers, we just had to order fruit of the local vines, and you can’t get what was in those bottles back in the US. And, get this – the second night that we were there we decided to splurge on yet another bottle that we wouldn’t finish and the maître d’ asked if we would first like to finish the bottle from the previous night that they had saved for us.

And the location – just North of “must see” Siena, you have so many choices of venturing into little, friendly towns or epic medieval villages with narrow streets filled with tourists and, of course, the universally beautiful and friendly Italians. Be cautioned – we ran the battery of our camera down most days because there is so much in front of your eyes that you want to remember for the rest of your life, both at the Fontanelle and where you decide to venture every day. But come back to your Inn at night because the roads are narrow and unlit and you definitely want to sample some vino Toscano and food that the younger crowd would refer to as ”OMG”. Then gaze out at the moon playing over the valley with the lights of villas dotted on the opposite hillsides.

This is one of those places that you are not sure you want to honor in a way it deserves because you are afraid that when you want to treat yourself again, you won’t be able to get a reservation because others read your review. But in this case, it would be dishonest to tell anything but the superlative truth.

My wife, 5 year old daughter, and I travel all over the world and treat ourselves to the best hotels. We were not disappointed by Le Fontanelle and recommend it without reservation to anyone who wants a first rate hotel experience with exceptional service, attention to detail, a breath-taking, charming setting, and a dining room to die for. Marion runs day-to-day operations, and she is a charming, intelligent, and very professional resource for every question and request. She is backed up by a young but exceedingly helpful staff -- people like Monica -- who will go to great lengths to make their guests' stays the very best. The rooms are very clean with all modern conveniences and the setting is spectacular. One person wrote that the pictures on the website represent the hotel well. Actually, they do not. The hotel and setting is far more beautiful than the video. I would suggest a re-do of the website. The indoor pool is really lovely (there is an indoor and outdoor one) and meditative, and simply sitting in a chaise lounge and taking in the view is inspiring. But the real challenge to description is the food. The dining room staff are fabulous -- I wish I remembered their names -- but they combine talent with quiet professionalism. The food and the chef's talents are memorable and we preferred to eat at the hotel on most nights of our stay (5) rather than at other restaurants nearby that we knew were also quite good. I think the warmth that the staff brings to their jobs pervades everything; so you really want to be around them and spend little time thinking about a potentially better restaurant somewhere else. This is a major point: the staff values its property and is warm and welcoming, making the stay over-the-top. At our departure we had the opportunity to meet the owner, a lovely woman who obviously cares deeply for the property.

The only suggestion I would make would be a small one: they need to increase the strength of their Internet signal. Especially Americans -- we need to be connected, and it was difficult (rather, impossible) with my iPad as they hadn't seen one yet. A small point -- they have a business center with a PC and printer, so this is just a picky suggestion of convenience.

In summary, if you are going to stay in the Chianti region and are looking for a base to explore the various towns -- as far north as Lucarella and as far south as Sienna (we also drove 90 minutes each way to Assisi), you can do no better than to stay at Le Fontanelle. They made my 52nd birthday quite memorable (did I mention that they sent roses to our room?!)

Thank you Marion and the entire staff! We will be back!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2010

Stayed with my wife for 3 nights. Found it on internet. It looks exactly the same as the photos on the hotel's website. Ideal place for getaway (romantic) vacation - located on top of the hill with its own vineyards and olive trees - provides for great views not only from the restaurant windows and open terrace but, as I understood from almost every room. Cozy atmosphere inside the main building with sofas to relax in and a bar to get the drinks from. Restaurant is great, nice tableware, good choice for breakfast. And again, fantastic view. Had dinner there as well on one of the nights. It's expensive, yes. But the food is very good and service is impeccable. So if you want to save money - eat out, but have dinner there at least once!
The only drawback we noticed: the rooms, while being comfortable, light, clean and tidy with high quality bed-sheets and all, bear the traces of slight negligence on the part of housekeepng - namely the floors were a bit dusty in the corners, some dust was also "discovered" again in the corners of the bathroom :-) Frankly, though, it did not spoil at all our impression of the hotel. Just decided to mention it, so the management knows where to look :-)

I'd reccommend to book directly with the hotel, because all the rooms are different and the staff will give you full description to help make your choice. I did exactly this and everybody I communicated with (telephone and e-mails) was really helpful and attentive.

During the stay no problems with languages - if you don't speak Italian you'll be able to communicate in English and/or German. The general manager, Signora Marion Winski, is there everyday and personally attends to clients' needs and queiries. All this also can be done perfectly by hotel staff, but her presence there adds a lot to "hospitaly scale". And she speaks all 3 languages :-)

Study your map well before coming to the hotel - it's a bit tricky to find. There are plenty of rural roads (in perfect condition) which eventually will take you to the hotel, but if you go from Florence for example you better take autostrada Firenze-Siena, go around Siena (Siena tangenziale), exit at Casetta, proceed to San Piero and then you're almost there.

Meanwhile the hotel is located conveniently for use as a base for trips around Tuscany (which we did) - Siena, San Giminiano, Montepulcano, Pienza, Montalcino are all in "driving vicinity".

We can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our time at Le Fontanelle. The setting is absolutely gorgeous and because it is small, the experience is very personalized.
It truly is a gem tucked into the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The reception team was courteous and incredibly helpful in planning sightseeing trips and excursions to local wineries. The meals in La Colonna Restaurant were excellent and the experience was enhanced by the staff, especially Salvatore, who was very knowledgeable about the local wines. It is a great place for couples to do as little or as much as they want to every day.
