“Oh dear”
Reviewed November 4, 2010

Arrived here with a tour for two nights, hot, tired and very sweaty when we arrived. We had been lead to believe the place was grand. Nothing could have been further from the truth. We were put into the annex and we were met with no towels, no light bulbs.....yes you heard it no light bulbs. Badly fitting windows everyone put into the annex complained it was very poor. If we had arrived in 1950 it may have been good but these rooms were poor. Some had ants in their room and broken windows. Everyone was unhappy. The resturant had flies and other disgusting things flying around. Glad to leave and we were not alone. It was somewhere to stay that is all I can say about this hotel. I am just shocked no-one else from our party complained guess they have complained to the tour company. Our tour rep disappeared guess she knew what was coming!!!!

I also stayed here as part of a riviera tour and was apprehensive after reading the other reviewers but I have to say I think they are unfair, yes the hotel is a little scruffy in parts but its is comfortable and I found all the staff to be very pleasant and helpful. we also disnt have long to explore but I did have a facial in the spa and very good it was too.
the public areas have an air of faded grandeur which was lovely, the food was very good. It is extremely remote so you really dont have a choice about where to eat but as far as I was concerned that wasnt a problem at all so if youre going there as part of a tour Id say dont worry just enjoy its quirkyness

Having seen some not very flattering reviews on this holtel we were a bit worried when we saw it on our itinery. However when we arrived we were pleasntly surprised. Faded elegance perhaps sums it up best but for all that it is a good clean hotel, very friendly helpful staff with excellent choice at mealtimes. Will be very happy to stay there again

This was an ideal hotel for a coach tour of Africa, hot spa pools to soothe tired legs, beautiful grounds to wander in, laundrette to cater for all your needs, excellent rooms and restaurants, superb location prior to touring battlefields.

We stayed for two nights as part of a Riviera tour.
We were placed in the annex. It is a bit like a 1950's Barrack Block. The rooms were small, the corridor outside was scruffy and the rooms let in all the noise and light from outside. If you opened the curtain, you were overlooked from the lawn and the block above.
Our friends had rooms in the main building. They were larger and of a good standard.

When we arrived many of us asked if we could have a light supper in the bar. We were told by the manager that it was full buffet or nothing. We paid for the buffet and found soup, bread, meat, cheese. Everything required to put together a light meal. The buffet was about 10 metres from the bar.

If you were hungry, it was a good buffet with an excellent lamb curry. The breakfasts were very good and the bar prices were good value.

Apart from the inflexible manageress, the rest of the staff were good.

We stopped at the Natal Spa as part of a package tour of South Africa. Apart from our group there were very few people staying at this hotel. We arrived after dark so didn't get a view of the hotel until the next day, which was just as well as it looks like a grey concrete prison block. When I read about the hotel it boasted hot pools and extensive walks around the grounds, but unfortunately due to the timings of the tour we did not get chance to go out into the grounds on any walks. We did however get chance for an evening dip in the hot pools which was pleasant.

The staff at this hotel were the least professional compared to the other hotels and my husband had some whiskey taken from our room. We were very careful to keep our valuables safe, but did not think about duty free - so be warned if you are staying at this hotel - lock up your booze.

Rooms vary in size and location. If you have a room in the 100 block - ask to change straight away. The rooms are very small and the decor makes them look very dismal. We had twin beds and my husband had difficulty getting into and out of bed without bumping into an easy chair. We move the bedisde table closer to my bed to enable him to push his bed over to give him more room. When we did this the leg fell off the bottom of the bed. When we looked the bed was stood on blocks! The bathroom was equally small. The odd numbered rooms in this block look out onto the brick wall of another block and the even numbered rooms look out on to the car park. I did ask the manager if we could change our room - as did at least one other couple - but we were told there were no other available rooms. We couldn't make that out as there seemed to be no one else in the hotel.

Although the Natal Spa state on line that the rooms have hairdryers, they don't all. Reception have very few to lend out. The one I had didn't work so I had to take it back to be told they didn't have another one and I should try later. I had to ask them if they could let me know when one did become available to stop me having to keep trotting back and forward to reception. As the rooms don't have phones, they did eventually bring a dryer over to our room.

Both the bar are and the dining room are very dull and depressing. While we were there the dining room was heated by bringing in patio heaters and dotting them between the tables. There was only one dining room open while we were there, I presume the Bistro restaurant only opened during high season. The dining room we used only prepared a set buffet on both evenings. The choice was limited, I presume because there were so few people to feed, but that withstanding what was on offer was over cooked and tasteless. On the second evening, because we had lunch included in the tour, they set up a light buffet meal for us. I have to say this was about the same as the evening before but very cheap at R65, so I suppose no complaint there. Breakfast was in the same room and not inspiring.

At least we didn't have to spend too much time here

Traditional type of hotel building with corridors and stairs, no lifts. Nice room , bathroom very poorly lit . Housekeeping good
Very nice dining room buffet dinner and breakfast , very good quality and taste. Good indoor facilities e.g snoooker, table tennis. Big disappointment , major building works taking place in grounds which spoilt ambiance. Hot spring still available.
Hyrax roaming grounds , very nice little creatures.
Staff very pleasant and helpful.
Once building works are finished I should think it will be very nice

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Set in 550 hectares of beautiful KZN bushveld amongst giant Cambrian granite boulders that are millions of years old, the Gooderson Natal Spa Hot Springs & Leisure Resort has beautiful views over the Bivane River and abundant bird life. Legend has it that the river at Natal Spa's warm water and bubbles were the work of a large black snake with an underground lair. While that myth may have kept the ancient San people from the healing mineral waters, it certainly didn't have the same effect on Oom Piet Wessles or the generations of visitors who have stopped over at this oasis between Vryheid and Paulpietersberg. ... more   less
