“An Italian Idyll”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

There can be few places on God's earth with a more tranquil and inspiring outlook than Castel Cellesi on the precipitous western hillside of the Tiber valley north of Rome, looking across to the shady mountains of Umbria. Add to this the warm welcome of a tiny village with a grand piazza, and the legendary hospitality of attentive host Eddie, and the ingredients of a perfect holiday are complete. The accommodation is comfortable and well specified with air-conditioning and wi-fi in most of the rental properties dotted around the village. A stunning clean, deep swimming pool with lawns and poolside bar is shared with other guests and village residents, but never overcrowded.

A personal welcome by Eddie on arrival is followed up by regular visits, usually with a fresh bottle of local wine, and genuine but discrete attention to our requirements for excursions, sightseeing or walking. There is nowhere worth visiting that Eddie isn't familiar with and can offer a rich travel guide from his own long residency in the country. The views from the surrounding hilltop towns are gorgeous and many famous (and little known) Tuscan and Umbrian sights are within easy reach. The awesome nearby volcanic Lake Bolsena provides contrasting experiences. After two fortnight visits to this region we haven't even scratched the surface and there is something about the atmosphere, food, wine, and friendly local feel that leave you wanting to come back for more.

Room Tip: Properties with an eastern aspect have gorgeous mountain views, those away from the piazza are quiet...

We stayed in Casa Amorosa for our two week holiday in Italy. What a beautiful old Italian village, the pace of life is sedentary, the villagers are friendly, a place were everyone has time to talk and chat. Our accomadation was ideal for our family needs, with plenty of room for three teenagers to relax, there was wifi in the house (v important) and at the pool which was situated in a beautiful garden. The pool itself was shared between the other rentals in the village, however it was never busy so sunbathing was very relaxing. On Saturday's a local lady called Ongar visited and did pilates classes, reflexology, massage under a big old tree. The village has only one shop which sells all the daily essentials, with the charming Marchella, in charge.

My husband and I began our honeymoon by staying 5 nights at Casa Verde in Castel Cellesi. We loved the whole experience. The house was perfect for our needs with full kitchen, including cooking utensils, 2 bathrooms ans a bedroom with a beautiful view of the valley. Eddie was very friendly, helpful, informative and accessible. He gave us a map and a full explanation of all the nearby sights worth visiting. With our rental car, we visited Viterbo, Orvieto, La Civita, Bolsena and montefiascone. All towns were unique and interesting. The food and wine were incredible. We would highly recommend Castel Cellesi to anyone looking for a relaxing experience that is a little bit off the beaten path.

Our family group consisted of nine family members some wanting their own accommodation so we booked three dwellings: Casa Amarosa, Casa Blu and Casa Verde. All accommodation was found to be satisfactory although the beds on ground and first floor of Casa Amarosa were a bit uncomfortable and need improving upon.

Life in Castel Cellesi is very laid back and relaxing. We used the village as a base to visit the surrounding hill top towns and other areas of interest. Our five days stay was far too short!

Our village accommodation organiser Eddie Dohan was very helpful and had a wealth of knowledge of the surrounding area. Eddie liked to pop around now and then to check on things and particularly in the late afternoon he would always share a glass or two of red wine with us.

We used our stay to celebrate a 60th birthday and an engagement. The local ladies kindly helped to make this possible for us.

The village people are very friendly and although we could speak no Italian we got on well with them.

We shall miss Castel Cellesi!

Our time here was perfect. A really relaxing holiday in a pleasant village away from the typical tourist trail but within easy reach of so many beautiful and interesting places. The accommodation was ideal for our needs, clean and comfortable. Eddie is so helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble for him. His knowledge of the area is superb and a great help to us in getting the best out of our stay. The village bar is not to be missed, and Irina who runs the bar never seems to stop smiling! We will be back!

We cannot say enough about our visit to Castel Cellesi! We loved every minute of our stay. Our host, Eddie was very helpful in planning but was also right there at the front door of our house when we arrived. The house was perfect for me, my husband, his daughter and her boyfriend. We met many of the people of Castel Cellesi in the village piazza and at the local bar/community center. Even though we spoke hardly any Italian, the people were friendly and very open to us. Eddie had already told some of the locals that my husband & I build ukuleles (www.myamoe.com), so they were expecting us. Most nights after dinner, we would wander over the bar and play our ukuleles and sing until after midnight. We felt so welcome!

On Saturday night, some of the ladies from the village cooked dinner in the piazza. Daily, we drove to nearby towns to buy fresh pastas, meats, bread & vegetables for dinners we happily prepared in our fully furnished kitchen. There was also a buffalo ranch in a nearby town that made fresh buffalo mozzarella daily. Wonderful!

We also took a cooking class with a local lady named Olga. We wanted to bring her home with us! That cooking class was one of the highlights of our trip. The village is very well known for its olive oil - like none we had ever tasted. Olga used this oil in our class where we prepared rabbit, tripe and wild boar. The tiramisu we made was unbelievable. We were so full of food & knowledge at the end of our class that we rolled back to our house & directly into comatose napping. Olga, we cannot thank you enough!

One day we drove to Cortona (about 2 hours away) for the Tuscan Festival of the Sun. There we attended a cheese-making class which was also fabulous! We attended a "concert" on the life of Robert Schumann which starred Sting & his wife.

We are already planning to return next summer! Thank you Eddie and all the people of Castel Cellesi!! We will see you very soon!

Our stay here was one of the highlights of our holiday. This charming house situated in a quiet, unspoilt village was spotlessly clean and provided a great base to explore to the hilltop towns of Tuscany. You need a car but getting around is easy (with a SatNav!!) and the generous host has a huge knowledge of the area and what to see, genuinely helping you to get the best out fo the sort of holiday you were looking for. There is a terrific pool, local cooking if you wish (or can you do it yourself in a very well provided kicthen that has everything). Highly recommended.
