“Paradise has some problems”
Reviewed June 17, 2013

This place is as good as people say it is . It's very quite and secluded and it's wonderful having the beach right there. It is worth the 2.5 hour drive to get there because when you arrive you realize that the trip has been worth it. My only concerns were these . Firstly the cocktails are not very good at all. They vary in quality and sweetness depending on who makes them including using the alcohol stated in the receipy
I gave up on cocktails after day 2 and drank my own spirits
The wine selection is limited expensive and misleading. I paid for what is advertised as an Australian wine Only to find it was made in Bali with Australian grapes . The food is fine but changeable but reasonably priced.
I was surprised to find you are not provided with any of the usual mini products such as razors, body lotion etc only soap shampoo and conditioner. There are very few DVDs to watch and several do not work.
The massages are excellent . Try the Bali massage with the heat wrap - fantastic.
I took a half day trip to see the turtle reserve that collects eggs to conserve them then keeps them unit they hatch then you take some of the babies and release them into the ocean. The trip is wonderful as you get to see the real Bali countryside and villages.
The staff are friendly and helpful. The place is spotless and the gardens well kept. I agree there could be more comfortable seating or lounging in the rooms but I spent most of my time on the lounges outside
as the temperature was great.
I usually stay in villas with their own pool but I did not miss that because there is simply so few people here and so much space that you feel as if you are in a private space anyway. I stayed 5 nights and that was just the right length of time for me .

This is a really nice small hotel with great bathrooms and showers. Especially the outdoor showers and bathtub are fantastic. Food is very good not too many choices but within my stay I never had a complain. Only the cocktails tasted awfully as written in the reviews. Staff amazing friendly and kind. Beds big and very comfortable. Everything looks as shown on the photos.

The bungalows are placed in a beautiful small garden area.
The garden makes this area very wonderful.

Only doubt is that the bungalows on the upper area are not stand alone buildings. But with separate entries. Also the lounge seats in the rooms are not comfortable. When take a sit u slip away from it. Internet was very slow and not always working. In urgent cases I had to sit in the lobby.

But that's all I got to complain about.Location.
It is far away of Ubud 1.5 hours and Kuta about 2-3 hours. Take a ride with the scooter and see original Bali life in the surrounding area. Traffic is easy to handle.
The beach is only footsteps away, endless and almost empty. There are sometimes few local traditional fishermen to watch. I wanted a quiet vacation and that's what I got. It is exactly what I wanted. It was a stay as expected.

Room Tip: Choose a lower bungalow

We just spent 6 nights at Kelapa and haven't stopped raving about it. We really needed some complete relaxation and this retreat delivered just like the previous reviewers have mentioned. We stayed in villa 3, which looks directly out over the infinity pool, through the coconut grove to the ocean. The soundtrack is rhythmic, soothing waves and swishing palm trees. There was only one or two other couples there, which made it feel like we had the whole place to ourselves. The bed was massive and super comfy, the massages were divine and nothing was too much to ask the staff. We drank fresh coconut water out of the coconut every morning before breakfast. We hired surfboards and had a play out the front, did the snorkelling trip to mejangan island (highly recommend it) and had the driver take us to ubud on our last day before we headed to the airport. On the last night they laid out a romantic candle-lit table with flowers scattered over it down near the water, very special. Overall Kelapa really is an excellent experience.

My only criticism would be that the food could be a little better and our toilet door scraped a little on the tiles every time we opened it which made an annoying sound. Also it's not 100% clear if the menu prices include or exclude the 21% tax for food and drinks. These are minor issues.

Although a few hours from the hustle and bustle of Kuta streets don't let the distance put you off.
A picturesque 2 and a half hour drive north west allows you to get into the mindset of relaxation!

We stayed for 5 nights in a deluxe ocean front villa and all I can say is WOW!
Beautiful room, brilliant facilities. Restaurant, Tides, was great. The menu isn't extensively large however it has a hidden depth and isn't overly expensive which is handy as it is the only restaurant for meals really.

Beautiful beach, pool and area really.
Would highly recommend taking a tour, the driver was great we took a tour to Negara stopping at a fishing village and temple. Was great to see more of this off the beaten track area.
However, I know how difficult it is to pull yourself away from the beautiful pool and beaches sunbathing and afternoon naps in the lovely room!

All the staff were lovely, we were at Kelapa over Valentines and they put on a special dinner with local girls from the school giving us a traditional dance and roses. They also gave us loveheart cakes for dessert which was beautiful on top of chocolates saying 'I love you'. Very sweet!

If you wanted something even more special one couple had a gazebo built out of the palm leaves for a more intimate dinner for two!

Kelapa gets you away from the hustle and bustle and gets you really relaxed. The atmosphere was amazing and I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to get away.

My husband and I spent 5 nights at the Kelapa Retreat in December 2012 and it was FANTASTIC. Everything exceeded our expectations - the rooms, the service, the food, the beach.... we had the best holiday ever. One day there felt like a week of relaxation anywhere else - it was magic. The drive out there was comfortable and exciting - it took about two and a half hours to get there and we arrived late at night. We were so pleased that the staff kept the restaurant open a bit later than usual to make sure we were well fed and comfortable after our journey. The rooms were spotless and romantic and well appointed - we loved having a private outdoor shower (as well as an indoor one) and we loved being so close to the beach and hearing the sound of the waves. The villas are beautifully designed and lead down to the most beautiful pool in an immaculately maintained garden - everything was so easy on the eye. It was very easy to arrange a driver for a day trip of the area (make sure you ask to go up the mountain to the sacresd tree) or day spa services, or well, anything! The staff were amazing. The food and the beverages and the service was amazing. If we had been there on a weekend we would have liked to go to the bull races - maybe next time! I would go back in a heart beat - this place is Heaven on Earth.

Room Tip: They are all good.

A lot has been said in the various reviews about how relaxing, charming and enjoyable the Kelapa Retreat is.

Instead of another detailed review we just let the numbers do the talking: We have just been there for the 3rd time and have already made arrangements to return again!

It was another fantastic stay at 'KR' - great accommodation (we had booked the 'residence' this time! very private, 20m pool all for yourself.... absolutely recommended!), great food, the most relaxing atmosphere, the wide sandy beach almost all for yourself and perfect for long and undisturbed beach walks, the lovely staff who give your stay at 'KR' that special touch....

... we will be back!
