“Best Ever Sunday Roast”
Reviewed May 19, 2009

We went to the Crown Inn on a rainy May day and knew we had picked the right place as soon as we entered the inn. What a jem of a pub in a lovely Gloucestershire hamlet. A jewel in the country. The roast pork was so tender, tasty and succulent, served with a great choice of vegetables and a superb south african chenin blanc. The staff were so polite and professional. A perfect choice for a Sunday. We will return. Worth the drive from Bristol.
Happy Pete.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Crown for 2 nights in April, partly as a belated 40th birthday present for me. The pub itself is absolutely lovely; about as close to the ideal English pub as I’ve found. It’s cosy, friendly, with great food and drink. If, like us, a pub with resident dogs is a bonus for you, you’ll love this place – they have two really friendly and loveable dogs, one of which invited itself for a walk with us around the village on our last day.

The management and staff also deserve special mention – they were very friendly and helpful. The village of Frampton Mansell is pretty and relaxing and there are numerous places of interest to visit within easy driving distance.

My only slightly negative comment is reserved for the rooms themselves, which are in a separate annex. Don’t get me wrong - they are a good size, clean and well equipped, but it’s a shame that when the pub is so cosy and charming, the rooms have a rather ‘business-hotel’ feeling to them. Although the annex is obviously quite a modern addition, it would be quite straightforward to make the rooms more in-keeping with the pub itself by changing the decor and furnishings. However, this is a small gripe and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Crown overall, as the pub itself makes the trip worthwhile and there’s nothing actually wrong with the rooms in terms of cleanliness and facilities – they just don’t quite match up to the pub.

I found The Crown on a web site deidicated to dog friendly places to stay. We have a 4 month old Boxer pup and this was to be his first time away so it needed to be a place that will allow dogs in the bedrooms - which the Crown does (for non-dog owners, not a whiff of a dog or dog hair in sight!).

What a fabulous pub this is. Friendly, excellent food, both dinner and breakfast, fab (vegetarians look away now) Old Spot sausages for breakfast. Lovely location, quiet because the rooms are in an annexe at the back of the pub with an excellent beer garden at the front where locals and visitors alike concregate in the sun (we were lucky, the weather was superb and the beer garden is a lovely sun trap). Their wine is also very good from the bar...an excellent Shiraz was enjoyed in the sun. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. Don't go if you are looking for 'posh' but if you are looking for comfortable, friendly and homely with very good food, then do.

They have two dogs themselves, a Lurcher and Lurcher/Collie cross who roam freely in their Kingdom. They are a delight and Tim had particular good fun with the Lurcher. Therefore, those without dogs go and have a lovely relaxing time and those with dogs, go and be totally confident that you, and your dog, will be welcomed with a smile - and a cuddle (for your dog!) We will most definitely be going back. Pauline Noble

Fantastic pub, very cosy, with great & friendly staff/owners. Food (breakfast and dinner) was amazing, and good beer/cider on tap....rooms are no luxury but are large, spacious, clean and quiet (separate annexe from the pub) and perfectly adequate....will be back!

The accommodation rooms for the Crown are sited in a purpose-built block to the rear of the inn itself. They are of a reasonable size and clean, though could due with some refurbishment. The beautiful views of the Golden valley were spoiled by steamed & stained window glass, caused by broken seals on the glazing units!

The inn is set in a lovely location and just oozes character. Plenty of wooden beams, flagstone floors and little nooks and crannys to suit everyone. Food at the inn was good, though a little pricey, as was the cost of the room, which at £85 was a bit steep. £75 would have been about right.

Nonetheless, a recommended place to stay with friendly and efficient staff.

Thank you very much for both your constructive and generous comments, in response I would like to inform you of our plans and try and justify our prices. Currently we are in the process of a full hotel refurbishment bringing all our rooms up to date, replacing all double glazing, bathroom suites and decor. We do appreciate that they are a little tired and old.
My partner & I have now owned the Crown for roughly 18 months, In that time we have managed to complete 5 of our 12 bedrooms, with also a great deal of refurbishment on the original 17th century pub including all new slate & Cotswold stone roofs. As we are a privately owned business that doesn't have the support of a large hotel company, refurbishments do take longer, due to the large sums of money involved.
We base our hotel rates on a number of considerations:
1. Our idyllic location.
2. The large size of the rooms
3. En Suite Facilities
&
4.Other prices in the area.
With all of this we are not cheap, but we feel are tariff is reasonable.

Our menu is devised of the finest fresh seasonal and local ingredients all prepared and cooked on the premises. The prices of our Main courses range from £8 to at most £13 we feel that again this is not cheap but it is a very reasonable price.
We are glad that you enjoyed your stay, and were not put off too much by the points that you have mentioned. I hope my reply resolves some of your concerns and we hope to see you again in the future, (to maybe try one of our newer rooms) as we especially value customers that let us know their opinion.
Many Thanks
Simon & Gemma

In a lovely quiet location. Breakfast was excellent and hearty. Service friendly and very efficient.

This was the latest of many visits to the Crown, the rooms were extremely comfortable and were very good value for money. Breakfast was great; I am a big eater; my wife was also satisfied with the other cereal and fresh fruit that was served as an alternative to the Full English.

The Pub and Restaurant are idyllic, Great local Ale and locally produced food at a reasonable price. Simon and Gemma (The Landlords) were very welcoming and went out of their way to help me and the rest of my party during our stay.

We like this place so much we now use it as a regular meeting place for us and our friends. We have also held a 30th Birthday party and Christmas Party there in the past in the Function room.

Look Forward to seeing you again soon Simon and Gemma!!
