The hotel was full of family and friends for the marriage of our daughter. The weather was beautiful, staff exemplary and the catering outstanding. We enjoyed it tremendously! We will certainly return to tour this area and to visit family and friends. The rooms were spotless, comfortable and stocked daily to meet our needs. the grounds were immaculate and had excellent views over the surrounding countryside. We could find no fault-except the stay wasn't long enough!

We visited this hotel as a family of four for 2 nights and our experience was absolutely shocking. Our main gripes were around the restaurant and the extremely poor customer service we experienced from the restaurant and general manager of the hotel. The hotel itself was in very nice surroundings.

On our first night, one of the starters contained 3 pieces of leggy thoroughly overcooked asparagus. It was almost indescribable. How the chef allowed it out of the kitchen beggared belief. Two of us chose the pork loin as a main, and again it was very overcooked and dry. A very disappointing first night, however, the second night was even worse.

Two of us ordered the seabass with crayfish. The crayfish was missing from the meal, and once we told the waitress, she promptly went into the kitchen and returned with 2 ramekins of freezing cold crayfish. What they were thinking I'm not sure. The lamb dish I ordered was supposed to contain lamb rib and lamb breast. I received a lamb rib that had 70% more fat than meat. The lamb breast did not taste very nice at all. One of the starters had a human hair on the plate. We asked to speak with the restaurant manager. We had to wait 5 minutes, and when he finally did arrive we explained to him the issues we'd had had both nights. He cut us off half way through complaining and said he would sort the problem out immediately by replacing the 3 main meals now and we could discuss with him the other issues we'd had the following morning. Once we finally got our meals, the seabass was much better, but the lamb was still pretty disappointing, and the other member of our party had to wait while he watched us eat our new meals. My parents decided not to have desert as they were not very impressed and had had enough by this time.

The following morning we went down for breakfast and the cooked breakfast did not contain the items we requested and we only received half of a very small flat mushroom each, and the tomatoes were overcooked to such an extent there was no liquid left in them. The people on our next table complained and sent theirs back, but by this time we just thought this restaurant is a joke and promptly left.

It got worse... We asked to see the restaurant manager who was working last night as he had promised to see us this morning, however, we were told he was not in as it was his day off. He obviously knew this but failed to mention it to us the night before so in effect he had just tried to fob us off and let the duty manager sort it out the following morning. We spoke to the duty manager of our issues and he said he would go away and look at our bill, he also gave us the general manager's card. We checked out and were given a bill where we noticed he had taken off the wine and the extra supplements on the meals. He was not around to explain this or to apologise and see us on our way.

My sister emailed the general manager when she got home and we finally received a reply from him after a few days as he wanted to speak to his staff first. His comments were that he had spoken to the restaurant manager and he said he had wanted to discuss the matter with us that night but we were unwilling to do this. This was a total untruth and we are shocked that the general manager was in effect insinuating that we were the ones not telling the truth.

We are absolutely disgusted and shocked in the way our concerns were dealt with; therefore I would not recommend visiting this hotel at all. It was obvious the restaurant was not up to scratch and the management staff were just a joke. The only staff member worth a mention was Sophie, the receptionist. She was excellent. They could learn a lot from her!

went on the 26th May for a 2 night champagne break with my husband. We took the executive room option which had a jacuzzi bath On arrival, we were delighted with the setting - a beautiful hotel with spectacular views. We stayed in the annex but it didn't feel like an annex at all. The room was fine with a huge and very comfortable bed . Also there was a lovely welcome pack of goodies and a bottle of chilled champagne waiting for us in the room. The breakfast was excellent and the evening meal superb. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was a super ambience. We are looking forward to going there again in the near future and are recomending it to all our friends.

we got a cheap weekend break at this hotel-great value. we had the best hotel breakfast we have ever had and we ate in the restaurant both evenings also. The size of the hotel is lovley-not too big. Ok our room could have done with an update but it was a good size, very comfy bed and decent sized bathroom which was very clean. the staff made us feel very welcome-just the right amount of informality/formality. The area is great-so many lovely places to visit. we would recommend this hotel to our friends.

Pleasant staff, good food, comfortable beds, super bathroom, reasonable price, lovely views. Only downside was ever-present hum from M5. Be sure to visit NT properties at Snowshill Manor and Chedworth Roman Villa and Newark Park.
NB don't order the cheese board for dinner- they want £7.50 for it and give you about £1 of cheese! Otherwise OK on price.

First, just one little gripe and then the good review. After reading other reviews on tripadvisor I emailed ahead and asked to avoid the rooms mentioned due to noise. I am not sure why (maybe for a joke)!, they gave me the one room that wasn't mentioned (15), but that was between other rooms positioned near an annoying generator noise. This wouldn't bother some people, but I didn't want it. When I mentioned this at reception, I was promptly moved to the annex, room 40 on the second floor, which was perfectly fine. We went on a travelzoo offer and the rest of the stay was brilliant. Lovely staff, fantastic food (both dinner and breakfast) and a lovely location close to lots of Cotswolds lovelies. The rooms are a bit tired, but still charming, and the service we received was second to none. A trip to nearby Painswick is a must, and Cirencester is beautiful. We only had two nights and wish we had lots more. I would definitely recommend this to a friend and would certainly like to go back.

We stayed 2 nights in a superior room with the romance package. The building itself is very impressive and the setting is beautiful although slightly tainted by the constant rumble of the M5. Our room was large, nicely decorated and well equipped. There was a fair bit of dust on the light fittings, bed posts and extractor in the bathroom but the general cleanliness was acceptable. We had a private balcony which was a nice, unadvertised, surprise. With the bed & breakfast deal you are allowed a £23 allowance for dinner, which is the price of the 3 course set menu. The food was excellent on both nights and in my opinion superb value for money. The breakfast is also very good with proper bacon and sausages not cheap rubbish.

The staff are mostly young and seem inexperienced but the vast majority of them work extremely hard and I did feel for them as they had a lot of self-important salesman types to deal with.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend this hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
‘Contemporary country house with the Cotswolds warmest welcome’ Set high on an escarpment overlooking the Severn Vale this 45 bedroom country house hotel lies between the Cathedral City of Gloucester and Regency Cheltenham. Hatton Court provides the right balance between traditional hotel service and all the benefits you would expect from a contemporary hotel. The Tara Restaurant is renowned locally. It is an ideal place from which to explore the Cotswolds. Hatton Court is a reassuring size; not large and impersonal, nor too small. As a former splendid Cotswold home the feeling is of being eminently comfortable as opposed to grand. Nothing is hurried. The reception is very much a lounge, with leather sofas, magazines and an open fireplace for those chillier days. Next door the bar is more a place to relax, take tea, read and talk than to rush. The care taken to prepare the food, combined with a smiling service, is complemented by the thought that has gone into creating the Tara Restaurant. Fully refurbished in late 2009 the natural colours and soft lighting make a relaxing environment for friends and relations to enjoy each other’s company. Private dining facilities are available in the equally well appointed Cotswold Room. The peace of the surrounding countryside and comfortable bedrooms, some with whirlpool baths, make for a good night’s sleep ready for another day exploring the Cotswolds. ... more   less
