“would go back”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2008

After reading some of the reviews I thought 'Oh dear, what have I booked'. Had a special offer deal at £79.90 per std double room DBB + free bottle champagne per first night. Arrived at the hotel, and thought the quiet country setting was just what I wanted. The receptionist who booked us in was efficient and gave us instructions to our room. Our room was OK, it was of good size, the decor was dated but bed linen and towels were clean. The radiator was on, so the room was nice and warm ready for our arrival. Tea and coffee facilities with biscuits free of charge. Bottled mineral water free of charge. Foxes mints free of charge.Trouser press, iron and board, hairdryer, TV and DVD in room. DVD's were chargable. Our bathroom yet again dated but clean, basic toiletries for our use. Our inclusive evening meal was good - menu was restricted but changed for the following night. There were 4 of us and all plates were clean. The waiting staff were attentative. Breakfast was also good - no complaints.
This is a 3 star hotel - dont expect 4* at these prices. They are trying to get things right and doing their best to provide little extras such as fresh fruit at reception, hand cream and mineral water in the washrooms. All the staff were courtious all the time. If you are looking for a small country hotel for a quiet getaway try this hotel. We were not disappointed. Their new manager Mr Ian Spanswick is doing a great job!

We had read some reviews before arriving for a weekend break (2 nights) so I was expecting the worst. But the hotel was a revelation. It certainly seems that criticism of the standards has been taken to heart. We were warmly greeted and a small problem with our booking was resolved quickly and with no fuss. The staff were all very attentive, the food was excellent and the service above-par. The wines were a little on the pricey side but a good selection. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. If you want ultra-modern, boutique-style experience, then the Hatton Court is not that! But it is a very good country hotel set in spectacular countryside, quiet and relaxing.

This was our third visit to this place and sadly our last.
Room was small, bathroom in need of refurb, torn curtains, saggy mattress and generally a bit drab.
Ordered wine on two nights from the list and neither choice was available. Food is outstanding, service lousey - no attention to detail. Great location but hotel is just relying on quality of its food to carry it through.
I did complain and had a nice letter from the manager who offered to let me stay free for a night - but when I enquired to take up that offer I got no reply.

Booked late for a bank holiday weekend into executuive room for two nights. Didn't even manage one night, we didn't even unpack the cases. Hotel looks lovely on the outside but don't be fooled. We read some previous reviews before going and thought "it can't be that bad" having booked an executive suite...but it definately WAS! Room was dark and dingy, no view, bedsheets disguisting, bathroom worn and mouldy with a loo that didn't flush properly and had a dirty brown ring stain. Don't dare to think what a standard room would be like! We informed the desk that we wouldn't be stopping at this hotel due to it's disguisting state and we weren't even questioned why, we can only presume it happens quite often. No local attractions, no nice looking pubs within 20 mile radius, can't understand why anyone would stop here. Such a beautiful looking hotel that could be made lovely - what a shame! A weekend away we nearly had....

What a shame this place is. I imagine that when it was first built it must have been very good, now unfortunately it's just left looking sad and dated.

The rooms are a good size, and the location is excellent, but after that it goes down hill. Our room looked like it hadn't seen a vacuum in a good while, and the jacuzzi looked like something out of the 70's, with perished jets and some dubious looking stains. We were also located above the back of the kitchens or stores so had the extractor fans going most of the evening and then being woken at 6 a.m by the sound of the bins being rolled out to the front for collection, not overly welcome when i was looking forward to a rare lie-in.

The breakfast was OK, with a self-service buffet for the cold stuff and kitchen order for the cooked.

The fact that it's very cheap (£75 for an 'execitive' from laterooms) saved it from a 1 star, but does not excuse the poor standard of house-keeping etc. It needs a major overhaul to make the most of the setting.

We have just returned from a 3 night break at Hatton Court. If we had looked at the reviews on this board we may not have even booked - but we are glad we did.
Yes, the hotel is tired, and our room was 'shabby' but it was clean. As we did not intend staying in our room all day my husband was far more philosophical about this, especially when he considered what we had paid for a half board break through Travelzoo.
The staff we came into contact with were excellent, and the food was very good - no complaints at all. We left on the Saturday morning and the hotel was very busy with lots of guests arriving on Friday night (obviously for a weekend break), and the younger staff on duty in the restaurant at breakfast did not seem to have the same consideration as staff on the previous days, but general sevice was not that bad.
The hotel is in a good position for visiting the Cotswolds and Gloucestershire, and we enjoyed our break. If the room had been a little smarter then I would have rated the whole package as 'above average'.

  • Liked — The location of the hotel and quality of food in the restaurant
  • Disliked — Tired and shabby appearance of room

My boyfriend and i booked a 2 night stay at Hatton Court through TravelZoo - a brilliant deal at £109 per night which included a superior room with breakfast and three course dinner.

The hotel looked gorgeous from the outside, and although it was a little old fashioned inside, our room was in the new wing which was more modern. The room was huge with a massive bed, lovely view onto countryside and a very large en suite with a fantastic jacuzzi bath.

We ate in the restaurant both nights (as it was part of the deal) and the food was very good - large choice and good quality with an extensive wine list. The restaurant closed/got quite fairly early, but this didn't impact on our evening.

Having read previous reviews of the hotel i was rather worried when we turned up. We certainly lowered the average age of patrons by about 20 years, but we had a really lovely break and i would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a relaxed mini break in the country.

  • Liked — the fabulous jacuzzi bath, hours of fun to be had
  • Disliked — the dated interior in the main house

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
‘Contemporary country house with the Cotswolds warmest welcome’ Set high on an escarpment overlooking the Severn Vale this 45 bedroom country house hotel lies between the Cathedral City of Gloucester and Regency Cheltenham. Hatton Court provides the right balance between traditional hotel service and all the benefits you would expect from a contemporary hotel. The Tara Restaurant is renowned locally. It is an ideal place from which to explore the Cotswolds. Hatton Court is a reassuring size; not large and impersonal, nor too small. As a former splendid Cotswold home the feeling is of being eminently comfortable as opposed to grand. Nothing is hurried. The reception is very much a lounge, with leather sofas, magazines and an open fireplace for those chillier days. Next door the bar is more a place to relax, take tea, read and talk than to rush. The care taken to prepare the food, combined with a smiling service, is complemented by the thought that has gone into creating the Tara Restaurant. Fully refurbished in late 2009 the natural colours and soft lighting make a relaxing environment for friends and relations to enjoy each other’s company. Private dining facilities are available in the equally well appointed Cotswold Room. The peace of the surrounding countryside and comfortable bedrooms, some with whirlpool baths, make for a good night’s sleep ready for another day exploring the Cotswolds. ... more   less
