“Had a great time in Winter...would be amazing in summer”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Only stayed one night as part of a road trip up the central coast from Sydney and had a great time. We stayed in a 5 bed dorm, which we had to ourselves (only 3 of us). There is an outdoor kitchen, bbq and pool so would be perfect in summer. The owners are very friendly ensuring you have a great stay. They gave us advice on where to go, beaches to visit and where to eat in town and booked us a sand boarding trip at a discount too. They also pointed out where we could see koalas and kangaroos if thats your thing! We arrived by car but you can get a bus at a discount into Nelsons bay and a taxi back is cheap too, so overall a great place to stay. Would definitely return. Great value for money!

After reading such amazing reviews on trip advisor I booked in here while travelling from Adelaide to Port Douglas but in retrospect it probably wasn't the right place for me.
The biggest problem was the price. Because I was travelling solo I had to pay for two people for a "deluxe double room" with ensuite toilet and shower. This cost about $105 per night which was far far too much for the tiny little cabin room, particularly as I'd just paid $100 per night in the Hunter Valley for 6 star accommodation. The "kitchenette" was no more than a kettle and microwave in a tiny alcove. The shower was the worst water pressure I've ever had.
Okay, so disappointment aside, the host Mark is a really nice guy and very helpful. He was always ready with a smile and great advice about where to go and what to do. The bed and pilliws was really comfy and the setting is really beautiful, plus they do provide free Internet - although my suggestion is, if you're by yourself and looking for a bit more luxury, stay a bit further up the road in Shoal Bay - it's incredible.

One of the nicest places we visited on our 6 month long trip to Oz.
Pretty bush setting, clean and charming bungalows, fully equipped bush kitchen, lovely pool and plenty of activities in and around the hostel (the snorkeling & dolphin watch trip with Imagine Cruises is a must)..
While Samurai and Port Stephens have plenty to offer in the way of tours and adventures, you can also take advantage of the pool or wander the paths where you can find lots of wildlife - we saw kookaburras, koalas, possums, lots of insects and the resident diamond python!
Mark & Sandy have extensive knowledge of the area and are happy to share and advise to ensure you get the most out of your trip, however long you plan on spending there. They're so friendly and really make you feel welcome.

There are a few creepy crawlies about, but be brave - it is Australia after all!

Room Tip: If you're looking for a romantic/relaxing getaway book the ensuite 'deluxe double' room.

Let me warn you!!This place is really really hard to leave. It had everything I was looking for. The wooden cabins are beautifully made, clean and have everything you need. Mark, Sandy, Josh and Bo the koala's in the trees and even Syphon the Python make you feel so welcome it is like you are part of the family.
During the day there is lot's to do, beaches with dolphins, national park with kangaroos and mountain for views. During the night the bush kitchen is the place to meet new friends and make a nice dinner (they have everything, pepper, salt, oil, sugar coffee and tea for free) and if you are lucky there is a campfire with marshmallows, and beers.
O and I almost forgot to say; great pool too!
You are crazy if you are not going there. And I am really sad I am not there right now!

Only stayed for 2 nights on my way up the coast but absolutely loved it.
My 5 bed cabin was perfectly clean and comfortable. Had a great nights sleep.
The staff were also extremely friendly, helping me to organise my dolphin watching trip and sand boarding adventure for the same day, telling me what buses to catch and when to be where.
The outside kitchen area was lovely, and the games / tv room was a nice place to chill out with the free to use pool table.

If you do choose to stay here though, make sure you bring plenty of bug spray as the wifi is only accessible from outside reception

Stayed in a lovely and very clean cabin which is impressive because the forest was right outside, above and below in every direction. Very nice deck perfect for relaxing in the evening. Even though it was raining often, the friendly central public kitchen area and game room made it quite pleasant. The campfires seem like they would be a lot of fun, and the staff are fantastic and helpful.

The Port Stephens bus system is a bit infrequent (every hour or so) but is the primary way of getting around if you don't have a car. Most of the many local attractions are accessible. There are bikes for rent as well as long walks if so inclined. We could spend many happy weeks here!

Spent 3 weeks there and absolutely loved it. Gorgeous location in the woods with a bus service stopping right at the door giving easy access. Towns, lots of beaches and the National Park near by. The cabins were really clean with fans and linen provided. There was an outdoor kitchen which was such a unique and fun experience. There's a lovely pool, deck chairs, tv room, DVDs, pool table, games, campfire and wildlife! The best thing about Samurai was the people. They were so friendly and so helpful that I didn't want to leave. Their local knowledge and advice were great and I'd recommend to everyone to go there. There's lots to do at the Hostel and in the Port Stephens area. I'd happily go back.
