“Ok but not really deluxe”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2012

We stayed at this place because it received such a great write up in the Lonely Planet East Coast Guide. We do not normally stay at YHA's but the write up made it sound so charming we thought we would try something different.
The owners were great and extremely helpful, however we did struggle with the insects, spiders, mozzies and ants inside the actual cabin. Also the location was a bit deceiving as we expected to be on or very close to a beach, yet this was not the case.
It was a bit of a drive to the nearest restaurants or beaches.

I'm sure as far as YHA standards go the Samurai Beach Bungalows is pretty good but if your after comfort and proximity to beach or town its not the best choice.

I loved this place. It was so cool! Everyone should stay here when in Port Stephens. And everyone should go to PS! lol
Cory and Bo (and canine Bo) were the hosts while we were there since the main hosts were on vaca. They were great and Cory was very informative and friendly.
The Bungalows are private or hostel style. we stayed in a 6 bed bungalow but it was only the two of us so that was kind of nice. The rooms are nice and clean and well stocked with blankets. The heater was also very useful. We went in spring so it was still a bit cold there at night. There's a kettle and bar fridge in the room.
The kitchen is an outdoor kitchen in the middle of all the bungalows and very rustic. I liked it, it felt like I was camping back in Canada. There's a really cool game house with a billiards table and couches for drinking and hanging out. The walls are full of knick-knacks and random things to look at. They have a clean gated pool for swimming. They have a washer for laundry and lines for drying. The reception area has tons of pamphlets for tours and things to do in the area. They also have discounted local bus tickets for you. They have a few simple grocery's but the town is only a 30 minute hike away. We did the hike since we were doing a nature weekend. The Mile Beach is a 20 minute walk away and has a little restaurant/club house on it that sells lunch, ice cream, and beachy souvenir. The natural area of the hostel and anywhere you walk promises Koala viewings but we didn't see any :( lol oh well. We did see some birds and small mammals. And Bo the dog.
Port Stephens itself has lots to do. I highly recommend sand boarding and viewing Tin Town. We also went whale watching, hung out at the beach, and spent the night in the town at their bar. They have one bar. And they have an amazing 24hour pastry shop! The whale watching is in a different part of PS that's more of a town and has lots of shops and a marina mall.

I went to Samurai Beach YHA with two 10yo girls for a quick break before school went back. What a great choice - the room was lovely (we had a deluxe double with an extra mattress at no extra charge) and very clean, with our own bathroom.

I would recommend a car and plenty of mosquito repellant. Also, with children, a healthy tolerance for reading books by the pool because they never wanted to get out!

The owners are lovely and so much is free/included that other places charge for - particularly DVDs. Bonus friendly dog!

The Samurai YHA is set in beautiful lush grounds on the amazing Port Stephens penninsula. My sister and I stayed for 2 nights in June and went Whale watching and explored the sand dunes. The hostel is owned by a very friendly and welcoming couple, who did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The cabins are cute and comfortable and the outdoor kitchen is great. Nice pool area and lots of character in the "Shed" (the TV room). The location is slightly remote, but there is a bus stop right in front of the property and the bus runs often enough and can get you all around the Port Stephens area.
Great place worth atleast a few nights stay!

Great value for price. The owners (Mark and Sandy) are really nice people. They provide good facilities and services for free, such as booking trips for you, free sandboard borrowing, a pool table and a Wii for rainy days in a comfortable, unique shed. Really unique atmosphere, and the kitchen, despite being in the woods, had clean equipment like dishes, utensils, cutlery, cooking saucepans, stove, BBQ plate.
Although I haven't been to any other hostels in Port Stephens, I really enjoyed the stay at the Bungalows!

The bungalows are nestled in a jungle like setting, which is super cool, and even the outdoor kitchen gets the odd visit from a kookaburra. Though not new, everything was cleaner than expected from a hostel in the jungle. Rooms were quite big and the beds comfy, kitchen well kept and stocked, fridge in rooms. The small pool was ok, not heated and with a bit of leaves and dirt in it. Hosts were extremely nice and made it a perfect place to unwind.
Not at all a party place, but perfect for not doing anyting and just relaxing in the jungle. Five minutes by car to shopping and beautiful One Mile Beach.
The only thorn were the mosquitoes and other bugs, but the hostel provides smoke coils and bring some repellent as well.
